The Allure of Authoritarianism | What The Wave is Really About (Film Analysis)

The Wave is based on a California class experiment gone wrong in 1967. The Wave shows the us the psychological vulnerabilities we all have to authoritarian movements. With many Americans using the Nazi label as a club, it's important to consider: How many of us would have faced down the movement? How many of us would sacrifice social status to do what is right? In this analysis, I breakdown the themes presented by the film and compare the German school with our own social and political climate.

In a chaotic time, the desperation for an authority to come along and solve all your problems makes sense.

This is why people should realize it was those same authorities that created all those problems in the first place.

Nothing solves all your problems. You solve some, and live with or outgrow others. It's work, every step of the way, and that's the only way to grow. Grow up, grow wise, grow to be human. Authoritarianism feels easy, because it's a shortcut. Someone else solves everything. But you don't grow - not up, not wise, not at all. Subhuman, you don't comprehend that nothing was solved. Your problems are worse, different, more of them, and the original problems, the ones you took an easy shortcut to escape, are still there. Painted in different colors. Do your own individual problem solving work. No shortcut, no easy. Become human. That's what democracy and freedom are.

I remember in high school my history teacher said that they could not perform a experiment like this ever again especially in school. If it where performed today in a high school it would most likely result in several suicides and a school shooting.

It is being done today, in schools across the nation. Marxist teachers indoctrinating students to be Antifa terrorists. Groomer teachers instilling confusion and mental illness in students and then exploiting them for sexual gratification. Racist teachers teaching students that some races are inferior and that this inferior race must be fired first from employment for social justice.

Good video! Although I think you left out the most important line of that Fight Club speech: "We have no Great War, no Great Depression. Our Great War is a spiritual war... _our Great Depression is our lives."_ Scary, how relevant that movie (and The Wave) are to America, today. I graduated high school in '00. That monologue from FC was of huge significance to me and my generation, and those to follow, coming out of the 20th Century (the so-called "American Century"). And the last 20+ years have only further proven the truth of those words.

@KevinJohnson-cv2no

Your great depression is your lives. Speak for yourself. Those that aren't too weak to fashion their own meaning & succeed in life are doing just fine lol, it's the meek dweebs that need to be assigned a role and designated a purpose like the rest of the followers that are aimless now. And these same meek dweebs leave themselves open to manipulation & subjugation at the hands of the Masters (those who fashion their own meaning and aggressively thrive in life, as mentioned previously). Tyler Durden himself is a great example of this lmao. Dude makes a bunch of average joes with insecurity problems believe it's modern materialism that's the issue, meanwhile he's banging the crap out of the first girl he lays eyes on whilst stressing the lack of romantic connection as something admirable, never wearing the same thing twice and having his lackeys drive him around in a limo. When Fight Club gets big he even starts wearing designer fashion in the final scenes. According to the TradCucks that usually support him in going against "decadence & modernism", everything Tyler does is hypocritical & blasphemous. But that's the point; Tyler doesn't actually align with any of these views, and doesn't need to. He fashions his own meaning in life, and uses these buzzwords simply as tools to manipulate those weaker than him, whilst he enjoys all life has to offer. Watch the KZbinr's "Andrewism" video titled "The Psychology of Authoritarianism" where he lays out two distinct authoritarian archetypes; the authoritarian follower & The Authoritarian Leader. Most people who long for authoritarianism are of the follower mindset, and these are the people that usually pop into mind when we think "authoritarians"... but The Leader is a different beast entirely.

A mindset & a methodology. If you look at all the different fascist states in history, they all had very different policies, but the methodology of the implementation of their power was the same. Absolutely. The rise of populism all across the west. The influence of NWO conspiracy theories have a huge part in all of this just as the anti semitic -masonic conspiracy theories did in the rise and during nazism. All the far right/alt right groups today see the battle today between rich vs poor and esp Nationalism vs globalism. The very basic idea is that globalist lobby groups like the WEF led by klaus Schwab essentielly are the unofficial world government guiding the west and so this branches off in a multitude of ways. The WEF or Davos is increasingly becoming talked about with their very real influence even among moderates in the msm these days-but for many followers of the conspiracy theory the time for talking and waking ppl up is running out and action is needed....and in my convos with them online that means violent action. I've bee told repeatedly and just the other day infact, that the WEF is NOT a lobby group ( IT IS ) but is infact THE world government . To them the tyranny is already here and that is why they feel force is now neccacary . I warned them that there is a major difference , a line between the influence of globalist think tanks influencing politics and what they saw. To them shutting down the WEF, preventing any 1 associated with the group running for public service, arresting everybody involved with them, imprisonment and even MURDERING them was not a violation of freedom of speech or anything else because the tyranny is here and action is needed to now to overthrow them. It simply can't be done democratically and "the sheep " are too many, too oblivious to whats going on. I've been warning ppl for years that if you continue to simply ignore and shut down conspiracy theorists without engaging with them in debate , it only strengthens their beliefs more and to the point where they will believe they are victims in the struggle and being shut down because they are speaking the truth.

This movie was so disturbing to me. Much like the Stanford Jail Experiment. Its incredible how fast any sort of power can cause insane authoritarian greed and unity. Ethics go out the window with a matching uniform and a matching step. Strength in unity. Ethics begone. Those who thirst for any sort of power become intoxicated by it.

The only bad thing about it is that the movie stets it in Germany. The real experience of the same name takes place in the USA. That's a reason why kt worked cause the teens thought that their country couldn't be an authoritarian one. So it was easier for them to get into the trap "This isn't a dictature. Out country beat the nazis and orher dictatures so no way we could become one ourselves" wich ks dangerous for every country and that's what Germany has been trying to do. They teach kids that they're not guilty what happened since they weren't born yet but that they must learn to identify when someone try it again. I'm Belgian so i'm maybe not entirely right about the US and Germany but it's what i think. Good. Vid by the way

There is little evidence that individually experienced dysfunctions, such as poverty or broken homes, enhance the odds of becoming an authoritarian. Newer research actually suggests that the amount of group integrity, power and ethnocentrism that an individual is willing to display solely refer to the conditions under which the group is formed an how it's existence is clinged to the idea that there is no alternative to it. This determines wether a group builds a positive or negative identity, whereas the latter means the surrender of the individual conscience and belligerence against any kind of deviance.

My thoughts were already leaning in the direction you lay out here, but also... This kind of thing has no real explanatory power. Who are the communists the "Wave" is fighting? Who are the Jews it wants to put in camps? How would it or could it gain the support of some faction of conservative establishments and the rich? What renewed claim to a social stake does it offer an insecure middle class? Real fascism had clear answers to all of these things. The uniforms and speeches and leaders were instrumental to these ends. But things like the Wave make them the end, based in individual neuroses and fulfilling their needs, not an expression of social forces and conflicts. The problem is the source material. All of these weird experiments from the seventies just seem like moralistic fables embellished by their authors for attention, and all of them amount to little more than vague warning against collective action, "authority", and "conformity", the most boilerplate things you could oppose in an atomized individualistic society like our own, all based on the pointless misanthropy that was current at the time. They offer nothing in the way of answers to the questions we need to be asking in our current crises.

Probably you need to see it to fully answer your questions. Wearing a simple uniform (white shirts) eliminates clothing as a status symbol. Implementing a value of "unity" allows formerly excluded kids to be part of the group. I only saw the original 1981 version years ago, but I think "Wave" members even tried to help students who weren't doing well academically to bring their grades up for the sake of the success of the whole group.
