We can easily read through this passage without having a clue as to how much deep and thoughtful material it contains. We learn stuff about the relationship between Jesus, Moses and Elijah, the difference between the first and second coming, why Peter wanted to build tabernacles for them, how Jesus' glory shows He is greater than Moses and much more. On a personal note, I have been thoroughly enjoying this methodical study through the Gospel of Mark and I'm grateful that you can join me as we mine the depths of scripture for it's treasures!
Here's the whole Mark series playlist covering both theology and apologetics in Mark. • The Gospel of Mark Ser...

When I was a teenager Jesus interrupted my dream and I saw Him. He looked how He is described in the transfiguration. Jesus is beautiful. I could not see his face His face shined as a bright light. His robe was a beautiful white that shown too. He said Come to Me. His words were in my head not spoken outloud. But there is no question. For many years I stumbled on being born again.I made it. Jesus is my Lord! When we die we step into eternity. Made Jesus Lord of your life before it is too late. We have no promise of tomorrow. Bless Mike and all listeners. @@jeremiahreese6396 You might not see this after a whole year, but I have to tell you that Elijah did NOT go to heaven. In the events of 2 Kings 2, the "Heavens" being referred to was the sky. Elijah was miraculously carried away to a place of safety away from Jezebel and to a new prophetic assignment, apparently in Judah. A number of years later we encounter Elijah again. Elijah writes a letter to wicked King Jehoram expressing Jehovah's condemnation. In the Bible this is at 2 Chronicles 21:12-15. The NT makes it very clear that NOBODY went to heaven prior to Jesus Christ (John 3:13), and that nobody else would go there until Christ's "presence". (1 Corinthians 15:23)

The Lord has answered questions that have been plaguing me for some months now. I was trying to understand when Jesus said that some of those in His presence will not perish before they see the kingdom of God, but some skeptics like to use that as a false prophecy. And also Luke saying that it was approximately 8 days while the other synoptic gospels say 6 days later til the transfiguration. Bless you brother; God has used mightily.

Great teaching, thank you. It has always amazed me that Peter, James and John saw the transfiguration and yet in the Garden of Gethsemane it says that everyone deserted Jesus. Peter denied Him three times. It shows just how much tribulation they were under in the Garden to desert and deny Jesus having seen His transfiguration. Sobering.

The apologetic tying Jesus’ statement, “... some standing here who will not taste death...” to the Transfiguration (which happens immediately after this in the text), should’ve been so obvious, but this is honestly the first I’ve realized this is likely what He was referring to. We seem to just look at it as a cap to the whole death/resurrection talk at the end of chapter 8; and it is, but it’s meant to lead into the events of 9 as well. I’ve always felt strange about the full Preterist view, so this is great. I think it’s clear that there are both partial and multiple fulfillments of some prophecies. Also, I agree that the 2 Peter 1:1-18 is certainly talking about this event, in retrospect. What’s cool is you can even add the last few verses, 19-21 to show that even though he was one of only a few that witnessed it, he doesn’t solely use this as his evidence of who Jesus is. He backs it up with Scripture and goes on to say that “we have the word of prophecy made MORE sure”. It’s important to understand that our personal subjective experiences, while invaluable to ourselves, mean very little to nothing to unbelievers. We need to be able to bring solid, objective evidence to our witnessing as well, and I think Peter values the evidence of prophecy as much, if not more so than even his own private revelation. Nice work, man 👍🏻

This was a great deep dive into these verses. I heard a pastor say that Jesus saying " Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power" was referring to the pentecost, which sounded plausible to me, but after listening to your explanation, the transfiguration makes much more sense. Thank you.

I’m with you Mike when you talk about people using the name of Jesus in ways that don’t reflect His glory. I have heard Pastors talk about Jesus as if He was like a friendly neighbour, someone who you could go to for a favour. I always cringe whenever I hear people talk about Jesus in ways that don’t reflect His power, glory, and ultimate authority. Many people seem to have a view of God where the Father is a distant figure, whilst Jesus is kind of a lesser person, whereas the scriptures reveal Jesus to be ALMIGHTY GOD in the flesh. I used to think that I would really like to have been present with the disciples, or just to have a face to face encounter with Jesus like they did, but now I don’t know so much. I long to see Him, but at the same time, I’m aware that I have this fear of the Lord, just like John experienced when Jesus appeared to him in the first verses of Revelation. I often consider that text, because John was one of the closest people to Jesus and yet when he had this experience, he was so frightened that he threw himself on the ground. If that was John’s reaction, then I expect that such an encounter would also be something similar. I look at the Gospels and I see that Jesus would have been a far different person than the popular version most often presented in sermons. His gaze would not have been a comfortable thing to have focused on oneself I believe. I’m amazed at how few Christians seem to grasp this element of the person of Jesus. They focus on His love and compassion, and that’s good and true, but they don’t seem to understand His directness of speech, which is right there in the text, alongside those softer characteristics. I think I would have said very little in His presence for fear of rebuke, unlike Peter. I also wonder at how many Christians don’t really understand that when Jesus comes back, He is going to be a very different person to what they think. The first verses of Isaiah 63 reveal a different characteristic of Jesus and I believe many people will be completely unprepared for that. Thank you for your love of the Truth.

I recently did a study on Elijah and Moses (Their works are referenced in Rev with the two witnesses). And the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Rev tells us the the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. Moses represents the Word of God/the Law. Elijah represents the testimony of Jesus Christ/prophecy. The two witnesses. Also meeting God on a mountain, fasting for 40 days....the symbolism is brilliant!! God is so awesome!!

Best part about the transfiguration... The ability of Peter to speak while speechless. Jesus was literally glowing. The other disciples were quiet but Peter was the man with a plan. This is why I love the gospels and the unfiltered truth they represent. I feel you Peter!! Matthew 17 4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son,[a] with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.

Brother Mike I’ve learned a lot from you thanks ...here is the light I have on Mark 9:1. And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power." (Mark 9:1, ESV) At Pentecost (all the disciples were there except Judas he had died) on that day ..the Kingdom of God with POWER / Holy Spirit came. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8, ESV) And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with POWER from on high." (Luke 24:49, ESV) But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. (Matthew 12:28, ESV)

Mike I love your teachings. Thank you and may God continue to bless you. Jesus came to me in a dream many years ago when in my teens. Jesus in rapture form yanked me from my dream and stood before me. He looked as described in the bible on His transfiguration with Peter James and John. Jesus said 'come to me". He was beautiful in and I will never forget it. I stood there in shock and I couldn't move or respond. It was as surprising as seeing a dinosaur in your backyard! I struggled with my Christian walk and this always helped to keep going. It took me most of my life to be born again and to love God more than my family. Maybe this is why I was so lucky. Thanks for listening. I tell people this story and it hurts my feelings when they don't understand how wonderful it was to see Jesus. Again God bless you And your cat!

I have long thought that Stephen was also in the crowd that Jesus told 'Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.' Acts 7: 55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. I would say Stephen got a good look at Jesus in His true glory before he died.

After 6 days. We stand on the edge of time. The sixth day is almost over. Why did he wait 6 days? Why not 2 days or that day. It starts at the creation account. See Genesis 1 and 2, 2 Peter 3 and Isaiah 46-52.

In Matthews account the location to where this was taking place was at the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, which is at the base of Mount Hermon. This is the same location described in the account from Enoch where the Watchers made their covenant with each other (Enoch 13:7). What is also interesting is the history of paganism at this location. The goat god Pan is said to be worshiped here by performing human sacrifices inside a cavern. There are videos showing this archaeological site and it's open to tourism. Their traditions claimed that this was the entrance to the underworld (Hades, Sheol, etc.) and it had the title of the Gates of Hell. Now You See TV has a great video on this subject and I think it's worth a listen to. During this encounter in Matthew it is revealed to Peter who Jesus was, He is the son of the living God and Christ. Jesus then switches his name from Simon Peter (rock) to Simon Barjona (son of Jonah) which seems to reference that it is Peter's belief in the sign of Jonah; a reference from earlier in the chapter, Matthew 16:4 and also in Matthew 12:39-40. It is the inward belief of Jesus' work that leads to him witnessing the manifestation of the glory of Christ, not a earthly sign like the Sadducee's and Pharisees were looking for. This soteriological concept is what the Gates of Hell cannot overcome. There's more, but I thought some here would appreciate what other's have found. God bless you all during this turbulent time that we all live in.

Yes Yeshua was not so much making a statement to His disciples as much as He was laying it down for satan and his mates. I'm going to build my Church right here at the gates of hades and you cannot stop me.

At that stage satan held the keys to death. But after Yeshua's death and resurrection He said in Rev 1: “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. The top of mount Hermon was the abyss, the gateway to Hades and satan had the Keys. In other words satan had the authority to keep souls of the departed saints in lock down. Yeshua grab those keys (authority) to decide who stays in Hades and who does not, from satan after the cross and His resurrection. He is simply awesome

When re-thinking about the disciples thinking He was coming back "very soon"/"quickly" - as with other things, I think they just mistakenly jumped to the conclusion that He meant "every soon". But..... Jesus said in Revelation: “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. No, reading it again, seems He is actually saying when He does come back, it will be "quickly" - the event will happen very, very fast and not slowly. When the disciples asked Him about the end of the age He confirmed that before that happened there would be wars, etc., etc. and the Antichrist would have appeared. Didn't give the impression it would be very soon at all. I've noticed there're other issues like that as well about certain statements that we've misinterpreted bc of preconceived mindset or something.

And some of the believers co-partake of this glory with Jesus - "When He comes to be glorified in His saints and to be marveled in all those who have believed ..." (See Second Thess. 1:10). "... GLORIFIED IN HIS SAINTS... MARVELED IN ALL THOSE WHO HAVE BELIEVED ... " I am only at 14:39 point in the video. Maybe you'll make a similar point latter on ? Good teaching Mike.

42:42 he’s not only in the promised land, he is with Jesus: THE PROMISED ONE. I always thought oh my it’s sad that he was not allowed to see the promise land but even in those little things, God won’t fail, he received something way better, he saw the reason of it all, of every word he wrote, of every tear he cried, of everything he went through, the reason of every sacrifice, the reason of the promise land itself, at the end of the day, he got something so much better. Which confirms to us that we need to obey God, and trust Him, even when we think it’s a bummer what’s happening o what’s happening to this other person, GOD KNOWS what he’s doing.

We in the church must woo Him back. He returns not for a unprepared teenager but a mature women as a bride. A critical mass, a humble yet faithful remnant maturing saints around the world will woo Him back for a bride. And He is the hope of glory in us - "Christ in you the hope of glory" (Col. 1:27). So some of us must live Christ that what we have lived would be expressed outwardly at His return, rapture and transfiguration. "We shall be like Him for we will see Him as He is" (1 John 3:2)

The transfiguration is visible scene about a passing of the torch to Jesus as mediator and the one whom the Father says we should listen to. Jesus said not to say anything until he is raised from the dead because his resurrection makes it official. That is why he said after being resurrected "All Authority has been given me in heaven and on earth." John the Baptist had followers and baptized them for repentance and spoke of the one coming after him is greater than he. He also said that he should become less and Jesus becomes greater. John was paving the way and guiding people to look out for Jesus, to follow him. This is how John spiritually represented Elijah.
