I grew up in Butler in the 1960's and can tell you what businesses were in all those buildings at the time. The one with the roof about to cave in was the City Cafe and was where I got my first job in 1971. My toys came from that Western Auto at Christmas and the building with the prescription sign over the door was Smith's Pharmacy where all our medicine came from. This was fun to watch but also sad at the same time. I left Butler for college in 1975. Thank you for this tour.

My hometown. I've been waxing nostalgic. My father was Sheriff of Taylor County from 1948 until his death in 1983. His office was in the courthouse until the new office and jail were opened around 1960 more or less. The old jail was like a playhouse for me. Thanks for showing a couple of shots of the inside. Haven't been inside it since 1980 probably. Ward Edwards was our long time State Representative. His museum is full of political memorabilia. Too bad you couldn't get inside to see all of the old photographs. When you were drinking your coffee, I caught a quick glimpse of my grandmother's old hamburger place, known as the Sandwich Kingdom. Sad to see so many of the stores now closed. Especially sad to see the old City Cafe in such a state of dilapidation. Got my very first haircut in the old City Barbershop. Thanks for the memories!

I love this. I’m from Butler, MO home of the World’s Smallest Tombstone and the first city west of the Mississippi with electricity. We’re known as the “Electric City” but there’s only like 4,000 people. There’s a beautiful town square that luckily my generation has taken interest in and is restoring it. Just last week they opened a coffee shop and they actually have coffee! It’s a beautiful little town if you ever feel like doing a “Butlers of America tour” There’s lots of civil war history where the town was burned down and rebuilt and a very cool local museum.

Amherst, Virginia sort of feels like it's still in the 1980s as well. The downtown businesses are in buildings that look like they're from the 1930s or older, with a lot of them still local and independent. Food Lion and restaurant chains like McDonalds are around the community, but many seem to like the older fashioned stuff still. Amazingly they still have a lot of their factories too, GLAD and Buffalo Air still churn out products. Everyone usually goes about their business calmly and politely from what I've seen. So far, most of 21st Century madness has stayed away. Pretty fascinating community.

Great video! I can totally relate to this. I recently moved back to my hometown after 35 years. I found it frozen in 1986. The women still had the big 80s hair and the guys with their bushy moustaches. 2 radio stations playing the same old songs that were playing when I left. I thought it was an all 80s station ...nope, just never moved on. Same restaurants, same people always talking about high school days. It honestly felt like an episode of The Twilight Zone. Hoping my job will transfer me back to civilization very soon! Cheers ✌

What a fascinating little town. I loved that they had a Western Auto. My dad was a mechanic and had his own garage after working for Ford for many years. He had an account at Western Auto so almost my entire childhood revolved around that store. It's where my bicycles, toys,typewriter,8-track stereo came from. Our console TV and console stereo also came from there. They didn't just sell car parts. That was in New Mexico so I was surprised to see one in Georgia. Love this road trip!!!

Trains, small towns, coffee and Red dirt got to love the south! With the train that went by in the town very cool getting My cousin Vinny vibes... The reason why you see so many logging trucks isn't because the log homes or anything like that there are a lot of wood pellet manufacturers down there and they have sustainable forests the Southern pine is one of the fastest growing pine trees in North America and it's a great source for wood pellets which is a renewable energy so that's why you see a lot of those trucks they don't just clear cut they clear cut with a purpose.

Phenix City is known as the "wickedest city"? I did not know that. My maternal grandparents eloped from Opelika, AL to get married in Phenix City! Adam, since you're staying right across the border from there, you really ought to dedicate a vlog to "the wickedest city". I'm loving the interaction with Tim and Tammy in this video.
