You also have to take into account the only reason they made Amazing Spiderman was to keep their rights to the Spiderman license. Sony does not give a shit

NDA1494 Sadly no. From fans know the licensing right are on a time deal. They only revert back after the studio doesn't do anything with the character for a certain amount of time. Sony can keep pushing out turd after turd in order to keep the right forever. However eventually they will have the problem of the movies costing more to make and market then they are bringing in. At which point the rights reverting back does become more of an possibility.

Fantastic editorial, a distinct blend of analytical investigation into Spider-Man's silver screen ordeals and comedy. And the fact that you included a clip from 'The Batman' 2004 at 7:35 -- thank you. :) It was a critically slated animated series on its worst days, but I grew up with it, so it's lovely to see it in any capacity or context. It is the inherent problem of adapting Spider-Man to the screen as an accurate representation of the original comics canon -- Spider-Man is actually the best soap opera ever told. If you compare 'Batman: The Animated Series' and 'The Spectacular Spider-Man', episodes of Batman are individual episodes, some actually occurring simultaneously but no prior knowledge is required, whereas 'Spectacular' can use its 13-episode structure to spin a coherent web (I am so sorry) of plot lines that are threaded through the episodes -- there's a new villain of the week, but one can chart Peter's emotional journey, what the status quo is in regards to his supporting characters and how far Spider-Man is confronting the criminal network of the Big Man. And the two franchises of the Spider-Man cinematic universe have attempted different angles. Sam Rami took the movie-conscious decision of having each of his films independent of one another; there's Peter and MJ's relationship as the potential soap opera element but any sort of turbulence is made redundant by MJ's lack of character and instantly hitting it off with Peter, despite the insistence of Peter's supposed life-long struggle to communicate with her. So Rami struggles to replicate the complex characters from the comics, although credit to him for actually adapting comic book iconography from Spider-Man (i.e. the costume in the bin as Peter walks away to a stormy night) to a greater extent than Marc Webb. Speaking of Webb, his films heavily indulge in mythos-building -- the cameo from the Gentleman -- and attempt a serial format but one that, without heavy planning, cannot work, since Sony's plans are constantly in flux depending on box office cash flow. We'd not even had the Daily Bugle, and it deserves to be a full-blooded ball for Peter to juggle amongst his sea of personal tribulations, and not an off-screen mention for plot convenience, thank you Harry Osborn. As a result, Spider-Man films' pre-occupation with action means that the current franchise lacks depth and can only succeed as a film cultivated to appeal to its fostered audience of fans of Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, as oppossed to the character of Spider-Man specifically. With great financial power comes great creative responsibility. Sadly, this iconic staple of Spidey's reason for being is lost upon the institutions today. Sony is still stocked up with rice and the brand is Uncle Ben's.

I never understood why there were always crowds of people cheering for spider-man when he shows up or did shit like line the cranes up so he can swing to oscorp to fight the lizard. I really hope marvel studios gets back the rights to the spider-man, fantastic 4, and x-men movies. I would like to see a galactus that isn't a giant space cloud.

Great video though I disagree with a lot of points i.e that the first two Sam Raimi movies didn't understand Spider-Man, which I think they totally did. I think you could stand to give them another watch and look for something a little deeper than what's purely on the surface level. Green Goblin/Norman Osborn had a nuanced relationship with both Harry and Peter that many people don't bother to focus on, which rang true to the complexities of their relationship in the comics. They understood that the villains weren't so much the key conflict as much as it was him trying to juggle being Spidey with his personal life - Spider-Man 2 isn't about his relationship with Doc Ock, it's about how being Spider-Man keeps screwing things up for him as Peter Parker. I can't exactly defend the 3rd because well, it's a bad movie, but the first 2 are legitimately good (in my humble opinion). But the whole "characters in the world of the movies supporting him" comment is right on the mark. Problems that both Spider-Man 3 and Amazing 2 seemed to have. And I've never quite managed to wrap my brain around just WHY they thought that would be a good decision. Anyway, great analysis on Spidey and entertaining video. I enjoy seeing non-bias takes on the Spider-Man film franchise, it's incredibly refreshing.

agreed, I think he totally ignores what makes the first two cinematic and thematic treasures. When it comes to pacing, character growth and emotional depth, balance in tone, editing,especially score, the first two were so brilliantly executed. Personally, while I think Garfield gave a more emotionally complex performance, I think the movies he was a part of where missing the charm and compelling villains of Raimi's first two.

sonicdihedgehog1 Well, you don't have to realize every part of the mythos. Batman has just as large of a mythos, but no single movie franchise has yet to adapt most of it. It's basically a case of picking what parts service your vision of the story and what parts don't. For now, let's just hope that Homecoming can pull it off.

Liz Harper: Re- Imagination I, liked it. To me it was missing one key component: heart. The Raimi films, as corny as they were, had sincerity. That just created a disconnect with me, the same type I felt with Doctor Strange and the first two acts of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2. Still, a nice movie. Tied with the original Spider-Man for me. Spider-Man 2 is still the champ for me though.

I will say when it comes to the two versions I tend to lean towards the Raimi films. Sure they're flawed but I like them more than the Amazing series. Yes even 3. I was actually one of the few that really did not like the first one. I didn't hate it but I felt like it was a real mess. Also the lizard is my favorite spider-man villain and I felt like they really did not do a good job with his story. I felt like that series was on very shaky ground after the first entry. When the 2nd one came out I didn't see it in theaters. I saw the reaction and meltdown and I can't say I didn't see that coming. I pretty much said to everyone "I told you so". Then I finally sat down and watched it and honestly it didn't bug me as much as the first. It was bad don't get me wrong but I don't find it as annoying as the first. I guess my bar was already set low after the reactions so there was nothing more it could do. To me though the 2nd one fits the Batman and Robin disaster. The first one annoyed me but this one I can watch with a smile because it's like watching a person trying to juggle 5 chainsaws. You know this isn't going to end well.

The next Spider-Man movie should be handled like Spectacular Spider-Man. Spider-Man should swoop in within the first five minutes to save someone who is astonished this urban legend is real before he zips off to continue his patrol. SSM picked up on him three months after he became Spider-Man at the end of summer break and he had not faced costumed or super-powered opponents. The next Batman movie should be handled just like that a la Arkham Origins. Bruce Wayne has been Batman a while, but he is still either an urban legend or a rogue vigilante hunted by the police whose worst opponents have been real world criminals. We know what happened. We don't need to see the newest version of what happened in brutal detail over the first hour of the movie. Spider-Man could have a moment with his aunt about what happened and show scenes with a voice over. He could be narrating the entire damn movie and leap into what happened when someone talks about being responsible. There will be no ASM3 and I'll be damned if I have to see the origin story retold a third time in less than fifteen years.

No, how did you REALLY feel about Spider man? I want to hear it from your gut! :p Analysis aside, I'm surprised you didn't bring up how this was something that Sony did more so than Marvel. If Marvel had it, I'm pretty sure they'd have put it into the Marvel-verse so that he helped out and was a part of their movie roster. I feel that somehow that kind of helps me see where their intentions are. They're making the movies for a quick turn around, quality be damned. That hurts Spidey in general since we know he's a helluva lot more. I would love to see what Marvel could do with their characters since Sony really isn't doing much with him. (Now I have to watch The Spectacular Spider Man...)

I think the only good thing in the last movie was Emma Stone, but yes I agree, her death is pretty much her own fault and thus the guilt theme the comics usually have gets ruined (even more than it already was with the reboot). What bothers me even more is that with all the clocks and the mirroring of scenes at the beginning and the end of the Amazing Spider-Man and especially with we all know what happened in the comics with Gwen, it somehow makes Spider-Man a hero of destiny, while in the comics he usually feels like the exact opposite, as someone who has to deal with a lot of random shit, and thus he feels more like a real person having to deal with the the issue that life can be sucky quite often, while he remains in the movies mostly flat.

Just subjectivly I was more moved that by the kid dressed as Spider-Man facing off against Rhino only for the reveal Spider-Man to swoop in 5:17 Than how in the film Ironman2 a kid with an Ironman masked is saved by Ironman. Ironically its retroactively established that kid who was saved by Ironman was Peter Parker before becoming Spider-Man.

Maybe I'm just secretly smarmy (don't tell anyone), but I loved Peter and Gwen's relationship, and, even expecting her death as I was, I spent the last 30 minutes of "Amazing" 2 weeping. Having a romance where the couple is generally in sync may not be as exciting as a couple who fights all the time, but it felt like a breath of fresh air to me after growing up with a million 90's era, "They're fighting; it must be love!" romances, and it made the loss of that relationship at the end all the more crushing. Peter and Gwen do have tension in their relationship, over balancing Peter and Spiderman, and I think it makes sense for the two characters to come apart because of this. The way Gwen acts and reacts felt like something both her character and a real young woman would do. Additionally, I'm unspeakably relieved that Gwen DID know his identity in the new movies, because a repeat of Mary Jane's obliviousness would have been unbearable. "I was in the neighborhood."? Granted, it would have been more interesting to have her figure it out slowly and have him trying to throw off the scent - it would have given greater tension to their relationship without making her look like an airhead. I think that the first "Amazing" did really well in generating a real character in Peter who actually feels like a kid. He forgets stuff, he starts fights, he fucks up, but he's at least trying and really seemed to have a developmental arc, whereas the first trilogy was mostly "Peter Parker and the Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day." Bad stuff happened, eventually Spiderman overcame it, but Peter didn't seem to grow as a person. Sorry, this got longer than I intended.

My biggest problem with the AMS movies are 2 fold. The first as you mentioned is Peter being absolved of any responsability for his actions by having the characters put themselves in danger. The whole point of the story is Peter taking resonsibility for his mistakes but the movies go out of their way to make sure nothing that happens is his fault. The second is that there is no dicodomy between Peter and Spider-man. Peter is very similar to Batman in that there is a huge difference between the hero and man. Without the mask he is Peter Parker, shy, awkward, and unsure of himself. With the mask he is Spider-man. Bold, cocky, and arrogant. AMS however makes him Spider-man all the time. There basically is no Peter Parker after about the 30 minute mark or AMS 1.
@TheVikingoPatagonico
@TheVikingoPatagonico 10 жыл бұрын
Is ironic The hypocrisy how many say that peter is not responsible for many actions, and when you do criticize hin the character and say "is not likeable". Peter is responsible for killing his uncle ben and is responsible for the creation of lizard and unable to rescue the captain stacy, if Peter had not ignored the promise of the captain, gwen would be alive. Peter she turned arrogant and confident after being bitten by the spider, so there was not much difference between peter and spiderman. Until raimi did that in his movies: boring and quiet as peter, boring and serious as spiderman

It's hard to really do these movies well it seems. They started before comic book movies could REALLY embrace their comicky ways, but I will say I loved the Raimi trilogy. Flaws aside, it was a great part of my teenage years and it was miles ahead of X-Men films in my opinion, which I feel desperately needs a reboot after screwing up nearly all the non-Wolverine characters. The Amazing series really needed to change it up a lot more than did, it just felt way too samey. That and I don't like the new hipster take on Peter Parker. For me, it really boils down to the villains, none of them really worked for me. They can have some great fight scenes and a few good lines, but as actual characters, it was wasted potential. Dafoe's Goblin did work pretty well in the first movie, as well as seeing him balance the double-life, but I get the feeling they played it safe. I want to love Spider-Man, I really do, but judging by the quality of the comics in the past few years and how this movie series is going, I think it's time for me to say RIP. Hate to bring up X-Men again, but as dead as it was to me (comics and films) DoFP at least was a good jolt from the defibrillator.

I agree with you on just about everything you said in here save for... 1. Batman's rogues gallery doesn't represent his own personal flaws. Rather they represent, basically, what Joker has brought up several times throughout several iterations, "All it takes is one bad day," or rather what happens when one thing goes wrong. Penguin, for example, is more or less about having a messed up family, but in just about every other way is Bruce Wayne. That's not a "flaw" in Bruce, but rather a show of the "one thing goes wrong" concept. 2. Not sure if I've seen Sensational Spider-man. There's so many versions of animated Spider-man and similar sounding names that they confuse me. So I can't agree with that >.> 3. I don't mind the whole Electro fight sequence or outfit. It isn't as bad as people seem to be making it. My problem with it, is that it was out of step with the music. In fact, the entire movie would be made tons better with a better composer. That's one of the things that kept popping up in my brain throughout the movie, "this scene would be better if the composer knew what they were doing." It wouldn't completely fix the movie, but I think, where ever you place it in out of 10, fixing the music would boost it 2 to 3 points higher, assuming a lower score. Obviously if you give it a higher score fixing the music would not increase the score as much.

It can actually be applied to any and all stories, but traces of it exist in Superman where all the villains are basically different kinds of Supermen. They all have some form of amazing power but don't know how to use it, or they lack an element of humanity to make them connect with others. Mark Waid has been picking villains based on Daredevils physical limitations which also works. I think it works best with solo heroes because the issue is about them and their growth. With teams it's about the overall collective, So X men is simply a great debate between mutants, non mutants and extremists.

Personally, I thought the Amazing Spider Man from the 90s was most sincere to the comics. It was darker in general, you generally saw the whole time the struggle Peter had to take balancing his life and the struggle with some of his most dire enemies being so close to him. (The Lizard, Green Goblin and the Second Goblin being Harry later and so on and so forth...) The dickishness came from him being with the Venom-symbiont in the movie and the series. (In the comics he was always nerdy but as Peter Parker never a total bully IIRC...) As Spiderman he certainly acted more like a bully with his constant mocking of his enemies. (Although as you pointed out the costumes they wore, were a good reason for mocking alone...) But I don't agree with the part of the guy saying Spiderman was a bully and no wonder they hated him. He is teenager and later college freshman, who tries to be a part time superhero, because it is his uncle's legacy so to speak. Spiderman mocking his enemies is more of a self-protection mechanism to not crumble mentally under all the pressure (and you don't want to show your weakness in front of your opponent in a deadly fight...). You especially see that, when he as Peter Parker thinks about the situation while trying to engage in mundane life and failing miserably, because he is so absent minded... (No wonder, when your best friend's father killed your fiancé)

The key question for me with all Spider-man franchises is "How do they handle Venom? (and by extension, Peter's interaction with the symbiotic suit)" I'm a child of the 90's and the Spider-man cartoon on television then was my favorite (right next to Batman, the Animated Series...what a coincidence >_>). The show led to my love of Venom as a character, and my final verdict on every Spider-media since then has been greatly influenced by whether I find Venom and interesting character with a good story-arc. I didn't know there was an Ultimate cartoon, but what spectacular I saw seemed to borrow a lot from the Ultimate comics, and so I stopped watching pretty early b/c I figured they would leave venom out to dry like Bendis. B-Mask, would you say Spectacular is worth watching for a fan of the Symbiote/Venom/alittlebitofCarnage story arcs?
@BMask
@BMask 10 жыл бұрын
Oooooooh yes. Weisman borrows a couple of things- he takes the friendship angle from the Ultimate arc, the alien angle from the 90's series (complete with John Jameson being the one in the shuttle) and takes the comics angle concerning Pete's inner struggle with the costume. Brock, to everyone else, seems more responsible than Peter- in fact the series makes out that Brock is actually a better person in general. It's a good ride- you get caught up in the misunderstandings that eventually lead to the venom saga. The only shame is that they never quite got to Carnage.

You know I just wished I watched Spectacular Spider-Man in the first place cause when I first saw the series, I thought it was boring then years later boy was I wrong now if you'll excuse me I got some old tv shows I got from my friends to watch cause the new generation is reeking with Twilight fans. No offense.

Plus I think it's worth taking on board that the best way I can discuss solutions is to show you a comparison. I've done the 'this is how the movie falls down and this is how you theoretically could fix it' before and it's just as easy to criticize. Never a right way to deconstruct in cases like these.

Goodness this movie is extremely awful. It makes Man of Steel look good and even then Man of Steel is not the worst Superman thing ever (Looking at Superman: At Earth's End)

See, the thing is, I suspect that Spider-Man fails so hard in film form in part because the comic just... Isn't all that good. And I mean, I'm talking about from the early days of talking heads and cool daddy-O peter parker, through Ultimate and up to the present day. Spider-Man is a great concept, and the strength of that concept brings people back. But most of the actual characters are boring or one-note, which you hit on in this video several times. So what we really need is a proper writer, like a Garth Ennis or Warren Ellis, to take over this material and give Spider-Man some interesting characters. The last time I read anything with the Goblin in it, he was (as you said) basically Hulk. How dull. For what it's worth, I think the original series from the '60s or whenever was as good as the comics ever got. It isn't deep, but it sure is fun.

i'm not a "huge" fan, and i just don't care. its just a movie i wanna enjoy, no matter if its gonna be bad or good, i give it a watch at some movies and series and tell my opinion, but i don't care about this super hero movie franchise if they will reboot again or cancel it or revive it. if they reboot spiderman again, fuck it, i'll watch. and the venom movie sounds exiting but i think it need a subtitle of the venom movie name. and the retelling stories, the amount of versions of the stories, i .... just don't care anymore, i know the lore of spiderman, batman, or superman or fantastic 4, and i know whats gonna happen and goes, its just predictable the same.... ah what the hell, lets just shut up and let them make some movies and we watch it.

Am I the only one who actually kinda of enjoyed Ultimate Spiderman? Not a fan of the version of aunt may (feels like they tried too hard for her to be cool, that she kinda isn't, nor was she ever meant to be) But its had its moments. Its not the smartest or intellectual show, but its not trying to be. Its just dumb ol saturday morning style cartoon with just enough awesome mixed in it to keep you watching.
@Durakken
@Durakken 10 жыл бұрын
The problem with that portrayal of spider-man is that they tried to make it whacky and mix in both the main universe of Spider-man and Ultimate Spider-man. This left conflicting characters in there and so you have an Aunt May that isn't well done, but is theoretically based on the Ultimate Spider-Man May which I love.

B- Mask i wasn't very surprised because of they way sony and the producers keep revealing stuff to fanboys like gwen's outfit and the bridge. i honestly thought rhino would have a big role in the series seeing as how ewe have electro and we have the ultimate version of rhino to make electro look good since all he ever wanted was attention btu that get's down the drain-_- if gwen wore a different outfit and sony never teased so much stuff that spoiled the entire movie we would've gotten more surprised. infact, if sony hadn't meddled with the movie the movie itself would've been magninficent

Everything in this video is correct, but this movie still was one of the most enjoyable from the Marvel universe. The fights were on par with those in Man of Steel. This Goblin was way better than Halloween John-117 and Permanent Derp-face Franco. Visual are fantastic. The older Trilogy can't compare to it. Its still silly in parts, but not as bad as the older movies. I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw this in theaters, but I wasn't expecting anything deep or ground-breaking.
