Regardless of your religion, if you engage in those activities, you are a bad guy, especially by modern standards, which is why I find it puzzling the conflict is ignored outside of the Marines' Hymn.

One less popular and virtually unknown war was the US intervention in the Bolshevik Revolution in 1918/1919. We sent 10,000 troops fresh from winning WWI and wanting to go home into Murmansk to.... well it was kind of unclear, but they fought the Reds. The Soviets did not forget that.

I think they were there to reclaim Allied munitions/keep them out of Red hands, not necessarily invade Russia and force them back into WWI. I think the Brits and French were more into regime change than the Americans but didn't have the troops available. The Czech legion that was fighting for Russia couldn't go home 150miles-ish away once the Russians quit the war, so they fought clear across Siberia, loaded up troopships in Vladivistok, and sailed literally around the world to get home. While not the US, it's worth looking up. At least one video has been done about it by a pretty good channel.

Fun fact: The Seminoles are NOT native Floridians, they are a combination of mostly Creek but also Yamasee, and other tribes that fled the Americans from Georgia and Alabama. In my state North Dakota, the lakota and dakota to the east and assiniboine to the north fought the historic tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara). From 1680s to 1880s the lakota to a greater extent raided continously into their villages in almost total war.

You know as a history buff I was kind of surprised when I looked up a comprehensive list of all the wars the USA has been involved in and realized I was unfamiliar with half of them. Goes to show how American history classes focus mostly on the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and the World Wars. The only reason most people remember the wars in Vietnam, Korea, and the Middle East is because they're either in recent memory or are currently taking place.

In my private high school, we studied the American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War and Philippines aftermath (man was that embarassing to learn about), the two world wars, Vietnam and some on the Persian Gulf. Korea though was mostly ignored. When I studied Korea myself, I was shocked: it was 10x more important to world history than Vietnam! And in a way, it's HUMANITY'S story, because of how many nations got involved (it was basically World War 2.5). Why the Korean War is not taught in our schools and shown in our media is beyond me. Some of the stories are just incredible.

and movies, don't forget how big pop-culture plays a role in this stuff. Cuz Vietnam is pretty much immortalised to most younger people through the visuals and sort of 'aesthetic' of Hollywood films, the cliches of Vietnam films, especially to people outside of the US. And also Vietnam and Middle East has such a huge controversial status that its still referenced in regard to criticising American interventionism and American war crimes. People just use the words Vietnam or Iraq in their argument as like buzzwords to make their point. Cold War history is still pretty crucial to modern-day relations of nation-states, whereas with something like the Barbary Wars most ppl would justifiably not have any idea who tf the barbary's are, why they existed, how they worked. Its a context thats difficult to explain by itself and is not technically 'relevant' anymore to modern nation-states and geopolitics. also there's no famous/recognisable Barbary Wars, Filipino-American war, Spanish-American war movie or many of the latin-american interventions or the Boxer Rebellion or intervention in Russian Civil War. There's a few interesting though obscure movies like The Wind and the Lion about the 1904 American intervention in Morocco, or something like Sand Pebbles (won a lot of Oscars) or 55 Days at Peking about America in China (in different periods), quite fictionalised though.

I don't know about everyone. Tripoli in particular was a story I grew up with, but Marine, from a Marine family. So some of our bed time stories are kinda weird. The siege of Derna was a big deal because it was the first time that the US colors flew over the fortress of the old world. It's also where, according to what amounts to Marine Corps myth, Lieutenant Presley O'Bannon, USMC, in command of the American Marines leading the attack, received the Mameluke sword that inspired the current issue Marine Corps Officer's sword.

Silas Kryger As someone who received a rural elementary education that brought up the trail of tears at least twice before 7th grade, I beg to differ. The actual problem here is that people hate their history classes so much they forget most of it, and the courses don't bring up many specifics (such as the Seminole Wars or Cherokee Wars) but instead opt to just give a general sense that they didn't get along so they moved further inland.

It's less of "we don't talk about the Philippine-American War" but more of "we get everything about it wrong". It's called "a rebellion" instead of an invasion. Discussion completely glosses over the war crimes. The war is framed in a context of imperialist "bringing civilization to the natives" when that's just blatantly false. So it's not that people don't talk about it, it's that whatever gets talked about is just wrong.

Here in south Florida we learn a little bit more about the Seminole war, it’s not really in the book but they teach about how the Seminoles, Miccosukee, etc were driven to reservations and fought back with guerrilla warfare. At my middle school and high school we had a Miccosukee and Seminole chief come and talk a little about it and their culture, one thing I found really interesting was the Seminole chief’s explanation on how they would run through the sawgrass by picking their legs up higher so they wouldn’t get caught or cut on it, and the soldiers would get really slowed down running normally and get their clothes caught constantly dragging them down

Um... the Trail of Tears is standard US curriculum. And maybe because I'm from Indiana, but we learned quite a bit about Tecumseh too. I think the big issue is that most of this is taught in middle schools and not high school, so students forget most of it by the time they graduate. There is just so much to cover it is hard to dwell on one topic for very long in the classroom.

Quick summary of Mexican Revolution for those who may or may not be curious This is actually one of my favorite topics as it shows how history in my country... can get pretty dumb Sorry if my english isn't the best & sorry if got something wrong, this is written by memory It begins at the end of the presidency of Porfirio Diaz, a president infamous for being re elected lots of times, you know how Venezuela is in theory a democracy as its leader is """"elected"""" well, same here, but unlike the Venezuelan situation president Diaz was a "good" dictator, he grabbed a country that was torn apart by non stopping wars trying to hold the country together since the end of the Mexican Independence & made that same country in a place that suddenly was getting into a industrial revolution, bringin telegraph & trains making life WAY easier, also created a middle class that had never existed before in the country, the one thing to criticize about his government was how he treated the low class society, giving them unfair treatment, unpayable taxes, no work rights & they weren't the only angry ones, people from the high class were frustrated at Diaz's constant power, wanting the presidency for themselves President Diaz was then interviewed by a reporter from USA in said interview he said "Mexico it's ready for democracy" stating that in the next elections he wouldn't participate but gladly accept whoever won the presidency next, as soon as this became known the race for the presidency started, here a man called Francisco I. Madero enters the picture as he becomes popular among the people for his more liberal ideals & anti re election campaign, everything seemed fine until one day Diaz decides to try to be re elected again, trying to get Madero out of the picture, Diaz sends Madero to prison in San Luis Potosí, this made Diaz president once again but not for long, eventually Madero escapes from prison & escapes to Texas to call the people on weapons against Diaz on November 20 of 1910 starting the revolution, the first city to be taken by this people it's Ciudad Juarez (my city!) with the help of other 2 characters from the revolution, Pazcual Orozco & Pancho Villa, seeing how this movement was serious, not wanting to lose a life of work Diaz leaves the country to never return The now President Madero was seen as a hope for the country who would change everything that Diaz did wrong but as he became president he started to take questionable decisions such as keeping Diaz's followers in their jobs inside the government despite that most hated him & maintaining the overall structure of that Diaz left, once again people we're mad & started to make plans to now overthrow Madero, his old general Pascual Orozco, a man called Emiliano Zapata & Felix Diaz, Porfirio Diaz's nephew, are some of the most remarkable of Madero's oppositors that started armed movements across the whole country, to fight against his oppositors, Madero asks help from general Victoriano Huerta, this backfired immediately as Huerta betrayed Madero, joining forces with Felix Diaz & a USA ambassador to take Madero out for good, Madero is arrested & on his way to prison he's brutally murdered being shot to death, shortly after Huerta becomes the new president Huerta's betrayal was seen with good eyes by most of Porfirio Diaz's followers and just when it seems war is finally over, the governor of Coahuila, Venustiano Carranza, didn't acknowledge as valid Huerta's presidency so he declared war on him receiving help by lot's of people, at the same time in Chihuahua a man called Pancho Villa also started his own movement against Huerta because he always believed in Madero since the beginning, meanwhile in Mexico City Huerta it's shutting down all opposition he has by killing everyone who dares question his rule & dissolving the congress so nobody opposes him, making even more people angry at his rule, then out of nowhere US president Woodrow Wilson comes into play, fearing for the US interests in Mexico he considered Huerta as a treat, using a ridiculous reason about some boat that shouldn't be in the place it was he started a blockade on Veracruz's port so that Mexico couldn't buy weapons from out of the country (yeah, we were so poor we didn't produce our own weapons) this way Willson thought he was showing his support to Carranza, Villa & Zapata but Carranza saw that as more of an insult to the sovereignty of our nation There are many battles, this being the part of the conflict where most people died fighting across the country, all of those battles led finally to a battle in Zacatecas where Villa disobeying Carranza's orders takes over the city finally defeating Huerta as he was obligated to leave the country seeing how he couldn't win anymore, it seemed that again it was over but when it came time to choose a new president the interests of different groups started being obvious, one of Villa's followers was chosen as the new president infuriating Carranza going to Veracruz with his people to plan a new attack against both Villa & Zapata's armies, Villa & Zapata on the other hand take control of Mexico city but none take the presidency as they we're not interested As soon as the Villa & Zapata separated Carranza attacked Villa with help of his new general Alvaro Obregon, after a long battle Villa was defeated but not killed, he just retired to live a more simple life, with him defeated & Zapata away Carranza took position of Mexico City where he started to work in a new constitution for the country, the constitution was a brilliant idea as with the new laws Carranza gains popularity amongst the country, even from Zapata's people, his biggest enemy at the moment, it was so good in fact that he was democratically elected president but he wasn't happy with that, Carranza would kill his enemies no matter what, he put a spy among the army of Zapata that gained his trust and eventually tricked Zapata, killing him After many years, Carranza's period was about to end but when he named his successor, his old general, Alvaro Obregon was not happy that it wasn't him, Obregon helped by Plutarco Elias Calles & Alfonso de La Huerta made a plan to kill Carranza, as soon as he hears this, Carranza tries to hide in Veracruz but in middle of the road he's intercepted and killed by Obregon's amry, Obregon becomes the new president in the next elections, fearing for the old groups Obregon decides to kill Villa, the last leader of the revolution sending people that would shoot to death without even trying to speak first Many years later Obregon was retiring and choose one of his men, Plutarco Elias Calles to be his successor, De La Huerta not happy with that made an army to attack but was defeated almost immediately, Calles becomes the new president, this would eventually lead to another war but the period we know as the revolution has ended As a Mexican, this period of our story makes me frustrated, seeing how people just for mere greed made the country fall in an state that was never seen before nor has been seen since & what is worst, schools around the country talk of this men like righteous people, heroes of our history, making the day revolution started a day to celebrate, i can only laugh at that because well, they're not the only men not deserved to be called heroes in our history, we have tons of them which just makes me even more frustrated

It is well known because 1) the USS Maine was destroyed and helped send us into the war; 2) Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders fought the Spanish in that war; 3) Admiral Dewey won the smashing naval victory in Manilla Harbor in the Philippines (hardly part of Cuba though) in that war - and we had a four year fight against Filipino freedom fighters as a result; 4) the war was over in three months of actual fighting, and was called "the splendid little war", by the aggressive Roosevelt; 5) the war marked the emergence of the U.S. as a world power (like the Russo Japanese War would do for Japan in 1904 - 05). The by-products or results of a war dictate if we recall them.

For more on this sort of thing, I recommend "The Savage Wars of Peace" by Max Boot. He gets in to a lot of these little overseas wars (like our military presence in China from 1840 up to WWII). He notes that the little wars provide training in tactics and for young officers that come in very handy in the next big war. For example, in the Pursuit of Pancho Villa in the Border War with Mexico, the Army learned how to use automobiles to support the troops.

I was actually familiar with most of these wars. With the border war, General Perishing was sent in to deal with Poncho Villa. Also, there were two Seminole wars; and the second one was brought about by the Indian Removal Act. In fact, one of the battlefields from that war is now a park.

A very interesting topic. Let's say the America's just never become of major interest/never are discovered. The Meso-American Empires where extremely advanced. In fact, most modern tech is based on Meso-American Tech. The only problem was lack on resources like Iron. The Aztec's even had guns before Europe came over. They just weren't practical in the situation the Aztec's where in. In fact, the Inca survive to this day due to their mastery. Think of these potential modern empires as Japan but even more culturally rich, technologically advanced, and far more powerful. Only 100-1000 years needed.

First of all, great video. I agree that the Canada episode would have been poorly timed, and good reaction to change it around. Second, a lot of the Natives-related wars are not talked about ( I mean who want to talk about our founding fathers trading land for beads and baubles, then to only kill them or give them "gifts" like the smallpox infected blankets that were knowingly handed over.) Third, a possible episode idea; What if the Olmecs, Tolmecs, or the Aztecs had not disappeared and had survived into, say, 1900s? just an idea you could use

How I’m sure many people remember American war throughout history: The Colonies fought for their independence in the Revolutionary war, later on people saw how screwed up Slavery was which led to the Civil War, Abe Lincoln abolished slavery, we mucked around for a long period of time, then Arch Duke Ferdinand was assassinated starting WW1, Hitler was furious about his nation losing and started WW2, something about Korea, then the Vietnam War happened which we didn’t win, we mucked around in the Middle East for a while, something about Kuwait, then 9/11 happened and launched the war on terror, US Troops remained in the Middle East even after Bin Laden was killed, and now we could potentially be starting a Third World War in the near future.

It's a 12 minute video. He didn't say it is a definitive monograph of American War. It's only 12 minutes long. All wars involve war crimes, as we define them today, but it is a relatively new concept. Our ancestors were just unapolgetically brute where war is concerned. In the US we learn first the Spanish American war where we took possession of the PI from the Spanish. The rest is taught as the Philippine insurrection. Also we are taught about America's experimentation with colonialism. There were atrocities on both sides just as in every war. We also learn about how the .45 ACP cartridge and the Browning 1911 came to be as a direct result of fighting Filipinos..

George Elson nahh at that time Filipino-Spanish independence war was going on then Americans offered the Filipinos "help" to get their independence only to replace the Spanish as colonial rulers. The Philippine-American war got triggered due to a miscommunication when American soldiers shot some Filipino soldiers crossing a bridge cause they thought the Filipinos was gonna assault them or something when in fact they were just crossing a bridge.

i think people forget that technically Mexicans, Cubans, and other Caribbean People are also native Americans. Before the land was America some states were inhabited by these people states like Florida, Texas, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. These states had these native populations before America invaded and Annexed the Territory or they bought the land from other countries that committed these acts of Genocide. There where also many other states on that list that i did not mention.

Some native groups don't recognize them as Native American because of history, enthicity (mixed race) and culture, a lot of tribes were isolated from each other and only made peace with tribes who the saw fit. Also the native nahua people don't recognize mestizos as indigenous because in Mexico, a vast majority of mestizos are racist towards them more so than they are to blacks. It's also the same vice versa. It sucks because mexicans among other Latin Americans could learn from their native brethren and share culture.

People moving into land that was conquered does not make those people native. It makes them colonists. Mestizos are only indigenous to the countries south of the Rio Grande. The caribs and arawaks were murdered into extinction by the British, French and Dutch. The few mestizos in Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican republic are the only Tainos left. The rest are just white and black colonists
