Well before I talk about another scenario, it's time to talk about the history of the modern Middle East. How did we get in this curfuffle? What led to the chaos of today? The problem stems back to, WWI.

Did the entente actually keep their promise to anybody? 1. They didn’t maintain their deal with Itay (balkans and ottoma spartition) 2. They didn’t maintain their deal with Yugoslavia (whom they promised much of the same as Italy) 3. They didn’t maintain what they told the Germans (whom were told that versaille would have revolved around the 14 points) 4. They disn’t maintain their deals to Japan (about equallity and china) 5. Disn’t maintain their deal with Arabia 6 told something to the greeks 7. Something to Bulgaria 7. Promised something else to the turks (same territory as greece and bulgaria) Dude, wtf!

@@leonardodavid2842 Because the fallout of lying to the Arabs was the whole reason The Middle East is in total shambles, maybe it would be still but it wouldn't be this devastating if Britain didn't lie to them. Look at Japan, the Great Powers lied to the Japanese regarding Equality and recognizing China as their backyard, this led to Japan isolating itself to Ultranationalism and Ultramilitarism which gave birth to the Bloodthirsty Empire of Japan we know. Look at Czechoslovakia, Chamberlein and France lied to them that France and Britain would protect the Czechs Territorial Integrity, and what happened? The Munich Betrayal, and it didn't even achieve Peace in our time. Look at the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, Germany and Russia guaranteed Non-Aggression, and Germany provoked Russia, Sure Russia was gonna invade if it weren't for Germany, but Stalin was sure the Nazis won't Invade because he thought Hitler wasn't that suicidal or stupid to cause a Two Front War that led to the demise of his thousand year Reich. Sure, World War II was won, but if you think the Great Powers should continue lying, then let's see the inevitable fallout of those lies.

This is what I hate about your videos. You never blame Westerns and especially America in any of your videos. How America supported Saddam and in the end created an incredibly unstable state. How America supported Afghanistan's Talibans, and created an unstable state. same with the Israel-Palestine-Egypt situation. Yes, Saudia was never a good peanut either. But the fight between Allied and Soviet is what created an unstable Middle East, even after Sykes-Picot Agreement, there were many chances during which America could have easily solved the problem, but it was too busy gaining influence over Soviet. By the end of 1993, there was an unstable Korean border, unstable armenia-azerbaijan, unstable iraq-iran, conservative Iran, conservative Pakistan, unstable Afghanistan, unstable rest of the middle East. Why because one fucking country could not get enough of power. So yeah. Dont blame brits, or Islam, because Koreans are surely not muslims, blame United States of fucking America, and if you think I am so wrong and out of proportion, do make a video about what America and Soviet's Cold war did to the entire region and be fucking honest about rather than doing some Micheal Bay bullshit about HOW FUCKING GREAT YOUR AMERICA IS.

If some history class is taught in school that leaves out the effects of WWI then that is just a teacher (or school system) not doing their job. Would united Arabia be more stable, though? Even if Wahhabism wasn't as infuential as it is now, there would be still Sunni-Shiite divide. Yes, united Arabia would be much better and more prosperous than all those Arab states of today are, but there would still be conflicts between Arabs and Kurds, various minorities like Christians, Assyrians, etc.. Or am I wrong? I can definitely see why French and British didn't want that to happen - united Arabia would be a regional power at least. Just imagine how wealthy that state would be if it was formed and survived to this day. Oil in Kuwait or Emirates alone is worth billions, add to that the wealth of modern Saudi state... Wow. I imagine that US or other major power would then use the ethnic and religious conflicts in the region to break that state apart, making it easier to control it.

+Corvus Yes, I belive that had there been Arab state composed of well... Arabia, that formed somewhere between the XVII-XVIII centuries, Arabs would have developed national identity on par with the European ones. With the centuries of Arab rule continuing to the modern day, the country would be quite stable. Instead what we got is the Arabs that were dominated by the Turks for whole centuries. Even if the Western powers granted Hashemites whole of Arabia, it would be a new country, without said tradition of nationhood it would be difficult for them to stay stable - not to mention outside forces would always seek to use the ethnic conflicts to destroy the country. It's the same issue as with Africa or even Balkans - had there been continued native rule throughout whole centuries, instead of foreign one, those regions would have a chance to be stable and prosperous, even with many ethnic minorities, because all of them would be integrated in the society by that point.

The first oil companies in the Middle East were British in Iran in 1908, New Zealand in Bahrain 1921, and British in Iraq in 1925. U.S. was first into oil in Saudi Arabia in 1938, thirty years after Britain in 1908. So European interests were gobbling up oil in the Middle East. The United States was the largest oil producer in the world until 1950’s...on their own soil. The Middle East was Europe’s oil supply. In the 50’s and 60’s US began producing less, Middle East more, because it was cheaper there. Then there was the 1973 Middle East oil embargo. That’s when U.S. really turned their eyes to needing control of the Middle East oil supply...so that an embargo like that could not happen again. Then in 2000’s fracking was developed. North American oil production soared. Obama administration guided by the environmentalist special interests limited American oil production through regulation. As of 2018, U.S. is again the #1 oil producer in the world! Large reserves available with fracking tech. U.S. has its own oil source. Let Europe worry about getting it from Russia and the Middle East. That should make everyone around the world who keeps accusing the U,S. Of being the oil greedy ones in the Middle East. Europe, with practically no military combined and the ones who started the Middle East mess can have it back. Let those who are holier than thou fix it.

That's why history is important. You can't know where we are going unless you know where we have been. People jump to conclusions about places like Africa and the Middle East without realizing why they got that way in the first place. The important thing is to realize this, not make generalizations, and to make sure atrocities like this do not occur again. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” - George Santayana. No flaw in human history has been more consequential than the ill planned Sykes-Picot Agreement. Santayana actually said this in his book "The Life Of Reason" in 1905, a full decade before that fateful meeting between British and French diplomats Mark Sykes and Francois Georges-Picot was made.

Interestingly enough, there was a later chance of a united Middle East under the Hashemites, during 1947, the Syrian Druze were in revolt, and wanted to unite with Jordan, whose king had promised to unite them with Jordan's own Druze in an autonomous region. Jordan's king was Abdullah I, son of Hussein, and brother of Faisal, who had been elected King of Greater Syria. After Faisal's death, he became the head of the Hashemites, and championed repeatedly the idea of a Greater Syria. Not only that, but Jordan's army was the best in the Middle East, and easily capable of taking over Syria. Basically had they managed to exploit the situation to invade, they would have won. It would also have caused the Iraqi monarchy (also Hashemites, Faisal's line) to survive and probably to unite with Syria like it did with Jordan in our timeline. It might have caused an earlier Lebanese Civil War, and Israel being quite different. It's a pretty interesting scenario.

There's also the fact Syria and Egypt are not contiguous. It doesn't mean something like it would always fail, though, had it been with Sudan and/or Libya, it probably would have survived.

Evil Limey What a cheap and meaningless criticism. OF COURSE we almost never see the cosequences of bad decisions or bad policy until they happen. That's especially true if the policy becomes anachronistic: the political world has fundamentally changed since Sykes-Picot, but we are still stuck with the result of a post-World War I agreement. Yet most people have never heard of Sykes-Picot, and don't know the historical events recited here. This video is as concise and lucid an account of complicated events as one could hope for. All in all, a terrific job by the producers.

I would just like to point out that the Middle East isn't synonymous with the "Arab World", as it is full of other ethnic minorities such as Kurds, Yazidis, Druze, etc. The term "Arab World" itself is a bit reductive as well considering that North Africa isn't technically Arab. Otherwise, great video!

I find comfort knowing that the US was always going to look over at the middle east and know its root problems didn't start with the US (as much as we fumbled and screwed it up ourselves). On the other hand, I feel terrible for the people in the middle east, these people have been fated to live in terribly arranged regions, all of which were set generations before they were born, and have nothing to turn to. Oh how great you are, Western Europe, leaving the mess you made in your colonialist days behind for the US to trip over and screw up even more (except you France, you haven't quite left them lmao).

Not to be nick picky but you didn't mention the similar agreement (can't remember the name)made with the Jewish populations in the region, which as stated was also completely ignored. This led to both Jews and Arabs having ultra nationalistic movements aiming to achieve their own versions of nationhood. With this a divide grew between the 2 groups (which was not there previously under the Ottomans) and culminating into the horrible relations we have between Israel and it's Muslim neighbours.
