Totally agree. I'm down for all four parts. So is my wife, who ordinarily is not a huge Western fan. We had a blast the next day talking about how much we loved it and trying to guess what might be ahead.

So right off the bat I just have to say that it’s not “missing from the marketing” at all. It’s on every single poster and in every trailer. In every piece of press for the film the fact that it is a 4-part episodic series is talked about. Every poster for the film says “chapter 1 June 28th chapter 2 August 16th”. It’s been very clearly spelled out. That being said, this is a great review. You really understood the movie.

But, people don’t pay attention! And from my experience, people SURELY don’t read. So, I guess what I was trying to do was just point that out for people who were curious but hadn’t seen anything about it. But thank you for the kind words!

I really enjoyed this reviewer's take on Horizon. It's exactly what I wanted to hear. It's a 4-part series, where Costner appears more and more in each movie. It's a process, building over the four to achieve the entire vision. Don't judge too quickly, let this film wash over you. It's a slow burn and the finale will be grand, rest assured!

Good review! I really dig your Alucard comparison (now I can’t un-see it), and now I wanna visit Utah! 😄 I watched this film with a friend. I enjoyed the movie, but methinks you and my friend liked it a little more than I did, which is cool. Yep, I think that’s why the critics are not reviewing it well - as a singular film, it doesn’t work like a traditional movie, but yeah, I’m excited for more! Sucks that your screening was like that (in a way, I love being by myself like that!) but I want this to do well, and that may mean it’s got a long road to profitability.

I still rank dances with wolves as one of the greatest film experiences ever for me . I’ve studied that film and still play the soundtrack today . I was wondering what Costner would do with a similar subject that had already been done so brilliantly in 1883 but quickly saw the differences. The use of amazing grace was also something special .

I am thrilled to see more westerns coming out recently. I certainly hope we can get more as the superhero genre begins to fade. I’m very excited to see this one and the other one that Viggo Mortensen made recently. That three hour run time was a dealbreaker for me today though. I work HVAC and had gotten off a particularly rough on-call shift yesterday, so I decided to take the day off. I had it in my mind that I was going to go and see this movie, but by the time I was ready to go and by the ticket, I knew that I would be falling asleep halfway through. Which brings us back to a discussion we had on one of your other videos, a while back, they need to bring back the intermission for movies longer than two hours(or maybe just ones pushing past that 245 Mark) Anyway, great review! 👍🏼
@order42show
@order42show 5 ай бұрын
Yeah, an intermission would’ve been nice, and it made it worse that all of the trailers and commercials meant that the movie didn’t start until about 30 minutes after the “start” time. It’s going to be interesting to see how things play out for this - adult fare like this has been sort of problematic in recent years. I want to see Viggo’s movie, too!

I am a big western fan. enjoyed horizon wil be going to see again. but in a different light. 1st episode of a possible 4 episodes. being a member of cineworld i whatch it 1st on members night. now realised Costner was trying to introduce the players to give an insight for the story. it's not easy now i realise a story with a possible 12 hours running time to get all the intended story in 180m. looking forward to part. 2 in August having seen the trailer at the and of pt 1 i think you should rate a movie of this scale on the finished product. seeing a second time I will enjoy even more it's going to be epic.

Well, I think that’s why a lot of critics didn’t really like the movie - it doesn’t really end with the typical wrap-up that most movies do. Knowing that was what I was in for, I was ready for it, and enjoyed it immensely. At this point, we’re guaranteed part 2 - beyond that is sort of up in the air, and it might depend on how both movies are received, so I’m actually kind of nervous! I want to see the whole story!

@@order42show it’s true about finding an audience. Pretty sure shawshake redemption had a hard time in the theatre too. Yet here we are, it’s probably a top 50 movie on everyone list. I think in time Horizon will be one of the all time westerns. Many people, especially younger have a hard time trying to watch a western. Mostly because the more recent ones have been so bad. Yet Yellowstone is a western and does well. Movie wise True Grit and 3:10 to Yuma were good. But most westerns are trash and 2007 and 2010 were a very long time ago. So, many young people have never seen a western that was good. But Horizon is beyond good. I know you don’t like the runtime. You don’t like the ending. Here's the thing that Kevin Costner and his movies and whatnot are for us that understand those kind of values because as we've seen the values and the standards and whatnot have fallen by the wayside and I wouldn't expect anyone younger than me to understand the value of this kind of movie or understand the value of Kevin Costner or understand the value of any of it because that doesn't exist anymore. So the fact that this has happened is leading all of us old schoolers indoor situation where we understand that this is the last of the epic movies to exist because the thing is people now and kids now or whatever for the last like what 20 years they don't understand what an epic movie is in fact they're not even used to movie theaters they're used to just sitting at home and watching it on their TV screen so I don't know how much longer movie theaters are actually going to exist because as we moved along and as we've taken a decrease in valleys and standards in our country and moved in all these people that don't understand any of thisthe American experience is dying and may already be dead so what we're seeing when it comes to box office for Horizon is the last dying breaths of America

I may be naive for thinking this, but I feel that great art (which I believe this movie to be) will ALWAYS be appreciated by the ones who are open-minded enough to let it in. I’m not saying that you’re wrong - but I just think that we’re in sort of a downturn when it comes to movies in general, as most of the really popular movies are very surface-level with little actual depth. I think we’re due for sort of a renaissance, where the sort of “fluff” movies we’ve had over the last decade or so will give way to more challenging stories, sort of like the 70s, where there was suddenly this wave of more mature movies that hit the scene. At least…I HOPE that will happen!

Emagine theaters were boycotting the movie. First they would not show it on their movies display, you had to click on subsequent pages to find it, also when you went in, they kept the mood lights turned on the whole movie instead of deeming them down to darkness as usual. Its like they are going out of their way to make sure this movie doesn't make money.

Sorry, I didn't see this comment come through! But...that may be an isolated case. I wouldn't consider it a really wide release - it was definitely playing on all the right markets, but even on opening day, there was only one screen showing at my local theater. And the lighting - that sounds isolated as well. Fact is, there wasn't a whole lot of buzz for this movie, and the trailer definitely didn't really win over the casual movie fan. Me? I hear "Kevin Costner directing a western", I'm in. But other people need more, like what's the story about? I can imagine it was really tough to sell this one.

I like the movie but I know that it was part 1 of 4. I looked at it like a novel. If this would have been setup as a made for tv mini series the complaints would not be happening and people would be raving about it.

They all bitch about the same thing and that this first movie just doesn't seem to lead anywhere and it's really pissing me off because if you're going to do a review about a nuanced kind of movie like this and you have to have your act together and there's too many jerk offs doing the wrong thing when it comes to this movie.

I don’t really consider myself to be a “real” critic, but it’s got to be tough these days. I feel that so many fall into the same bucket as some KZbinrs who follow the trends - they “pick a side” without really stopping to understand why some people have a viewpoint in the first place. All I can do is try to approach each movie as honestly as I can. This feels more like a novel in the way that it’s structured, and I really appreciate that!

He had like 8 storylines going in one movie but we jumped into the middle of them all with no character development and then just as suddenly jumped right back out...for another hour. This is going to be the most nominated flick at the Razzies. Now I can see why it flopped and got cancelled.

One of the worst movie experiences in recent memory for me. The editing was awful. The lack of a plot was just confusing. "Storylines" stretched so far apart that you forget who these characters were. Tried to be artsy and it was just artsy fartsy. What the fuck is with the ending just going into a montage of scenes from part 2 without any context. Just garbage.

Wow, ok! I say it all the time, but it’s all subjective. Sorry you didn’t enjoy it!

Lousy character development. Movie not good. Don't waste your time. Three hours you'll never get back

I mean…that’s your opinion, and you’re welcome to it. I’d like more original, on-location movies, so I’m all for it!
