Late to this video but got to say, I think Vangelis made a great *album* (probably his most sophisticated album of all) but an absolutely terrible *film score*. It doesn't match what's on screen at all and actively hinders the action, and if you pay attention you can hear where the makers have had to substitute someone else's music or awkwardly shoe in cues originally intended for somewhere else. It's hard to tell whether this is all because of the rush to release (and I think it's this one where Vangelis delivered the score extremely late), but it's problematic.
@order42show22 сағат бұрын
I’ve only seen this once, but have been meaning to watch it again. I’m wondering if that was why I found it so hard to connect with the movie…? (Thanks for watching, though, and no worries about being late!)
@drdreel555922 сағат бұрын
@order42show it's possible. There are some really odd moments where the score is tripping all over the place. But I think the movie, while noble, is overall a bit of a mess. It's Scott slowing down because a shot is pretty rather than because it does anything (eg the woodcutter ants), etc. Shame because the cast is absolutely top notch.
@order42show21 сағат бұрын
Absolutely! I know that they were in a bit of a rush because they wanted it released for the 500th anniversary. I’d heard that Ridley said he wanted to do a director’s cut - I’d love to see that!
@dragoshift23 сағат бұрын
It feels like the tone randomly shifts after act 2. As if the story had to be changed due to a sudden cutting of the budget or episode numbers. It was still good but there were so many plot points that seem to just end. they never figure out what to do about the "wild runes" they just find more ways to break physics with no more catch, it was implied Viktor wasnt actually healing people but killing them and replacing their bodies with empty husks but then it turns out it was all real? then of course there was warwick becoming another drone instead of full wolf and viktor's final form low key coming out of nowhere (when did he get his old laser arm from season 1 back?). Then Ambessa who up until act 3 had a pretty solid plan and path to said plan to weaponize hextech suddenly fighting a war so that her soldiers will become part of Viktor's cult?
@order42show22 сағат бұрын
Yeah, it feels like they decided to end the series at some point after production already began. One of the things I loved about S1 was the blending of different styles of animation, which probably added to the production time. There was a lot fewer of those scenes in S2 as well. It’s really the story that suffered the most, though.

I feel all the pay offs never hit or actions happened with no purpose. A bunch of small nitpicks that compound into a big issue for me. Caitlyn is setup to be a dictator and then one musical montage later, she isn't. Vi and Jinx just tried to kill each other violently and then one musical montage later, they team up. Warwick is built up for 4 end of show teasers and he really only gets 2 scenes of being the animal and his arc is basically over after 3 episodes. What was Singed plan to not get mauled by Warwick in prison since he didn't know beforehand Jinx would be there when Warwick arrived? Isha blew herself up but it didn't do anything because Warwick didn't die or even look hurt. Ambessa gets restrained by Vi but then still shows up moments later at the camp ready to fight. We spend all this time showing Viktor healing Warwick but then that gets undone, essentially "wasting" run time during the healing process since it's for nothing. The happy family reunion falls flat bc it is immediately undone and not even really that sad as it was already a gut punch the first time Vander died. Why did Ambessa even need to invade/do a diversion for Viktor when his robots swarm everybody and end the fight in about 30 seconds? Warwick/Vander died like 4 times in the show and I really only felt the impact the 1st time. Jinx's "death" felt like it was bolted on to the end of the show after the climax. Where did Jayce and Viktor go at the end? It didn't seem like they died. I did enjoy this season and it is still better than most shows. Arcane is still probably my favorite show ever. The visuals and music are still untouchable and are the embodiment of shows being an artform. But the writing just had enough holes that I can't just gloss over them. Which for a show as amazing as S1, is disappointing. It suffered from the same thing as GOT and Cyberpunk. I see the story beats and like them, but it needs more room to breathe.
@order42showКүн бұрын
I wholeheartedly agree with all of your points! It has to be that they decided to end Arcane in S2 (even if there are other offshoot series or one-offs planned). It’s especially frustrating with how close S1 was to perfection on all levels.

There were a lot of baseless assumptions, perhaps made in terms of the previously-made movies although the characters in Prometheus would not have seen the movies so where would they get the ideas from? But anyway, the main flaw I thought was assuming that the tall humanoids were The Engineers. Far more likely they were some kind of servants/minions of the real Engineers. I don't think the real Engineers would be sacrificing themselves to kick-start life/intelligence on other planets. They would make servants for that.
@order42showКүн бұрын
That could’ve been interesting, although…to be “chosen” to seed a planet, that could’ve been a high honor! So many differences in the way we view life/death here on earth, just imagine other life forms on other planets!

I would say that for me, the antagonist was not Viktor, the antagonist was Ambessa. She manipulated Viktor to get a weapon to deal with the Black Rose and was the driving force behind all the events on season 2. I feel like a lot of the things that make the moments more impactful in the series are heavily steeped in League Lore. The Black Rose, the raven at the end, the whole story with Ekko (whose nickname is The Boy who shattered time and Boy Saviour), Warwick, Singed, Orianna, and so on. For people who don't have at least a passing idea about the lore, it might seem scattered. In fact, one of Ekko's voice lines in the game is specifically calling out that he used to have a crush on Jinx. And Arcane has ended, but they have announced work on series about at least 3 other regions: Noxus (where Ambessa, The Black Rose and the Raven are from), Demacia (A place where magic is banned) and Ionia (Asian inspired region that went to war with Noxus)
@order42show3 күн бұрын
So, I might be reaching here, but it sounds like you liked it? I appreciate it when any IP can please longtime fans of the lore, but the first season did a much better job of keeping us casuals invested and interested, IMHO.

@@order42show oh yeah, I liked it a lot xD The fact that Jinx and Ekko dance in 4 frames per second as as allusion to his ultimate in the game rewinding 4 seconds, the esports logos on the wheel at the bridge of progress, that raven that is either a reference to the demon of secrets Raum or the Champion Swain, Ekko's weapon being the hand from the clocktower, Singed being the one behind the creation of warwick, Jinx quoting the lore entry on Janna, and the Orianna reveal at the end. @@order42show I wouldn't be too hard on yourself for being all over the place when the story you're covering was also a bit all over the place. Every scattered point you brought up had me going, "Sadly, yup." As for Arcane's place amongst animated shows* I've seen, it's easily my favourite show ever when it comes to style, but for overall quality I have The Clone Wars at #1 and probably have to keep Cowboy Bebop (subbed!) at #2. Arcane maybe could've challenged for #2 if S2 had managed to maintain the emotional heft of S1, but S2 stumbled off that path while Bebop's emotional pulse built and built all the way to the end. Also, Bebop's music >>> Arcane's. And The Clone Wars - for all its messy moments, goofy episodes and janky imperfections, it's not just the most affecting _animated_ show ever for me, it's one of the most moving and resonant stories I've experienced in any medium or genre. I don't know how much of that impact has to do with the stupid pace of our ludicrous Send in the Clones mission, but I reckon even without that intense framework those epically intertwined stories of Ahsoka and Anakin and Padme and Obiwan and Rex and Fives and Echo and Sabine and Bo and Ventress and Maul and Hondo and Cad Bane and the rest of that whole galaxy-sprawling cast of characters would still have gotten to me in a way very few stories ever have. It's just a bummer with Arcane that after an incredible first season which left me feeling the show could become something with the same kind of lasting impact, S2 fell quite a way short of delivering on that potential. * _Only considering action/drama shows. I also love (most of) Futurama but it's such a different deal it's too hard to compare._
@order42show4 күн бұрын
I feel like the music is a real subjective thing - I found Arcane’s not as perfect as my own taste is concerned, but it certainly fit the themes of the show, and Bebop’s were the same, so I feel it’s sort of a wash there. As far as Clone Wars goes - I totally get it. I also loved the journey that we went on with our podcast, but…Arcane shook me. Hard. Like…S1 was so shockingly good. And LASER focused, which makes S2 even more of a bummer for its lack of it. When it comes to visuals, it’s no contest - Arcane wins easily. But story wise, I believe I agree with your ranking.

Back when 3D flat panels had become all the rage, a good friend told me he was going to buy a Sony 3D TV to which i asked him "why you wanna waste money on a fad?" He was SO certain it was going to be the future as it he had waited a full year to buy one to be sure it was going to be a legit future tech. I laughed and said in 10 years NOBODY would be talking about them let alone selling them because wearing glasses every time you want 3D was cumbersome AND lame. As a good friend, I make sure to rub this in his face any time I can remember to do so. He still has the TV but he put it in his basement (and it sits behind a larger 4K TV). Now if you will excuse me, i must text my friend Ed and ask him how that 3D TV is doing. LOL

It was a fad, for sure…but I still have my 3D TV, and it’s doing great! I blame the studios though…they decided to go the cheap route and do post 3D conversion rather than film it using 3D cameras like Cameron did for Avatar, so none of their movies really had the depth that Avatar did.

It’s a creator’s job to attempt to give people that which they didn’t KNOW they wanted or needed. Some will never get there, but you can’t fault them for trying.

This is a weird review - you're criticizing the film for the very emotions it's intentionally trying to stir in you.... The characters are SUPPOSED to feel 'flat' and disinterested, and you're SUPPOSED to realise that Kit is a psychopath. You state that you felt this, well that's not bad writing sir, that's the point! It's like criticizing ROCKY because you couldn't help rooting for him - its what the film is trying to do! You felt everything Malick wanted you to feel. It just might not be to your taste and that's fine
@order42show9 күн бұрын

**Some Spoilers in this comment** I overall did like and enjoy it. It was fun, had a lot of cool moments, and I enjoyed a lot of the Characters. Specifically Lucius, Macrinus, the doctor and Emperor Geta were so good! My biggest issue though was immersion. Immersion was so bad and constantly took me out of it. I felt so many times I'm watching a marvel movie. Started out with the first battle. It was a fun and cool battle but way over the top. Some of it was me being a history buff but could look past it. Such as Trebuchets being used in the 2nd Century. But that battle was just pure action. I don't always want historical accuracy but I do want historical authenticity. This had neither. Which again I can look past a bit, the first battle in the first movie which is top 20 or top 10 movie for me. Isn't that historical either, but is authentic. I felt like a lot of fights in this one were like watching borderline super heroes fight. The sharks in the Colosseum? How did they get them there lol. The secret block opening a secret room... This this a Indiana Jones movie. The guy fighting off the back of a Rhino. If it was authentic and kept immersion strong it could of been up there with the first. It's still a great movie but fails to reach potential it had. Instead of being another historical epic it is just a historical action movie. A good one but with quite a few weaknesses.

Netflix true crime docs have always been hit and miss and this documentary is a huge miss. True crime hucksters (e.g., Robert Graysmith) are overjoyed with this somewhat interesting, but ultimately worthless waste of television space. The FACTS of this case demonstrate that Allen was not the Zodiac Killer and that luck played a major role in this unnamed/unknown psychopath not being apprehended and incarcerated for the rest of his miserable life. Speaking of facts...a partial DNA profile was obtained from the back of a stamp from one of the Zodiac letters and that DNA profile did NOT match Allen's DNA profile. Three bloody fingerprints were found on Zodiac victim Paul Stine's taxicab and the prints did NOT match Allen's fingerprint exemplars. A palmprint was found on one of the Zodiac letters and the palmprint did NOT match Allen's palmprint exemplars. Handwritten letters by the Zodiac did NOT match Allen's handwriting exemplars from his right AND left hand. The physical descriptions of Zodiac after he murdered Paul Stine do NOT match the physical descriptions of Allen circa 1969.

There is one scene in the extended edition I really like. Even though Ridley might prefer the theatrical, this one scene adds gravitas to the characters in a sentimental way. Maximus and Juba are talking on a roof about their families. Juba talks about dying before he can see his wife and daughter. Maximus says his wife and son are already dead. Juba eventually says "You will meet them again. But not yet. Not yet" The last line in the movie where Juba is placing his hand on the sand covering the figurines is "Now we are free. I will see you again. But not yet, not yet..." is a callback to that scene on the rooftop. It lends emotional importance to something that is only in the extended version when they have that exchange on the rooftop.

Hmm…I think when I was pulling footage from the movie, I pulled the theatrical, and that scene is in my video…? But either way, yes, I love that scene - Djimon is pulling from something there, because I remember that being his scene, and probably where I was like, “Yep, this dude’s awesome!”

@order42show Odd...I've seen the theatrical tons of times, and I don't remember seeing it until I viewed the extended version. Very odd. One of the versions doesn't have it, and being the theatrical, I think that's the one without it. But yes! Such a good scene, and you understand the importance of them telling each other "not yet".

I remember gladiator being all the rage with my friends back in middle school and then hearing about it again some years later from friends who love it. I’ve just never taken the time to sit down and watch it. I might have to rent it this weekend to see what all the fuss is about.

I’d be curious to hear what you think of it, completely removed from all the Awards hype and such! The digital version is actually on sale on Apple right now for $5.

It’s an odd one. I enjoy it and it’s competently made, but it still feels like it’s toward the bottom of Ridley’s filmography.

I remember seeing this in the theater in 2000 with a few good friends. All of us were blown away after the viewing. It completely exceeded our expectations and challenged our assumptions.

Yeah, I’m fairly certain I did NOT see it in the theater (which bums me out). It’s shown its quality, and if that rewatch is any indication, that will continue! (Really hope the new one is good!)
