The way to tell them is as follows: The Romans were descriping numbers as : I II III IV V VI .. The problem was you cannot multiply a large number say 4599 x 2300 in Roman numerals So Aryabhata, in 476 AD said the positional number needs to be developed because it was going to hard to use Roman numbers. The concept of zero was already conceived about 5000 BC in India, called shun-yaa. Aryabhata also developed the pre-cursor to Calculus, which is the infinite series and defined pi/4 = 1 - 1/3 + 3/4 ... as a geometric series which converged to pi/4 in the form of poetry or Sholakas. The value of pi was developed in India using algebra rather than geometric measurement like the Greeks. The Arab called namely Al-Gebra.. sorry about the mis-spelling, introduced to the southern Europe the formal mathmatics using the scientific method instead of POETRY of Sholakas

When we say 'Directional value of a number" we are in Single dimension frame. I don’t know anything and week in maths but imagine this as a 3D graph like X,Y,Z where x is - and y is + and neutrals as Z so what we can do with this or we can add another dimension as 4D plane where you can name it but what we gonna do with this new added planes ?
