From what I gather, one of the reasons why Merry Sues/Garry Stus are so reviled is because they’re written like the universe revolves around them, that everything clicks into place for them without so much of an interesting conflict. In the case of Mash, it’s the exact opposite. The universe is against him and he’s using his strength (metaphorically and literally) to get around in a spectacular fashion
@BladeSerph8 ай бұрын
Pretty much why i still never did like Black clover, which sure, maybe some people liked it but considering BOTH it & Mashle are magic-based medieval fantasies, you can easily see the night and day difference on how each of them handled thar own power systems. Since literally Asta gets dunked on for not having `normal magic` yet got some weird tome that summons swords that just conviently negated magic. Which realistically, should of fking been considered magic, him just having a `weapon deployment magic` of sorts, yet they act like its not magic. Then he start pulling crap like flying, looking demonic and so on, yet in a number of cases as far as my brain even can remember of that series they still wanna say it `aint` magic. Didnt help either they just over-dozed on fk-wadery with magic shenigans in more ways then one. But of course that series was literally being called something that wanted to vaccuum up as many shounen tropes by being both asta supposedly is an underdog yet he exclusively has one of the most OP gimmicks that should make everyone see him as: Oh fuck, i probably should just kick his ass with my fists instead of constantly throwing magic at the hyper-caffienated kiddo who if i actually had a brain, should be trying to restrict his limbs or criple his arms instead of constantly throw magic baseballs at him. Atleast in Mashle`s case, its not that he is IMMUNE to the magic, its more like a case of magic & physical values NOT being treated as entirely separate so someone with enough strength could brute force spells that `have` to take a physical form of sorts to function at all, especially for offensive/defensive or utility based means. Which is definitely a nice underlying way to treat magic instead of how some shows just unconditionally treat `hero awakening powers`, `magic spells` or `isekai based materials` as being the equilvent of slamming titanium quality axes straight thru rotten pieces of drift wood when put up against `conventional metals.` I seriously miss stuff like GATE which makes stuff like high grade ordinaces and specialized military equipment clearly effective against what was likely medieval grade weaponry or in the case of dragons, likely trying to puncture several CM thick layered plating helicopters equipped with heavy grade flamethrowers or something, hence the problem on taking one of them down was a lack of firepower for dealing with such threats, where a fighter jet equipped with higher caliber rounds shot thru a machine gun & missiles for punching thru tanks would be able to puncture thru said scales more effectively. Well, atleast with Solo-leveling also being present this season too, its a bit more understandable in some cases, being used against all kinds of monsters which really upscale to some dangerous stuff then simply being humans from another land or something. Which the protagonist of that series depending on how far they go into it, definitely gets quite a few tricks to justify how crazy things get and the whole thing with `normal hunters` still have to make use of equipment acquired from the `dungeons` to improve themselves since not every one of them got amazing stuff and even the amazing ones need some strong equipment for dealing with VERY dangerous stuff.

One way I know a character is a Mary Sue is when they hate someone without any other sign that character is evil, and it becomes so clichéd it is not only predictable it also ruins the anticipation for the conflict.

Yes, people who think Mash is a Marry Sue are mad that the story of Mash is about Mash. If he was a Mary Sue then the _world_ of Mashel would be about Mash. @@BladeSerph I see a big problem with how you see black clover, yeah Anti-magic is technically magic from the demon world BUT is NOT Asta's magic, it belongs to the demon in the grimoire. Anti magic isn't treated as if it wasn't magic, it actually does treat it as magic having it's limits and everything. Also Asta isn't inmune to magic, yeah he can negate magic when using his Black form and Devil-Union but for him to do this, he needs to be Stronger than the magic that he's trying to destroy, also they are multiple time in the whole series where Asta is hurt BY MAGIC and enemies who attacks asta physically, it isn't just "Yeah i'm someone without magic that got the power to destroy everything and can instantly use it at is full power become unstoppable" instead there's a reasonable progression in how asta "OP" powers grows, for example Asta was basically powerless with just a big heavy sword and later a more normal size one that can destroy or reflect some magic, if he were to loose those swords or loose a way to use them, he becomes pretty much an useless character and even when he unlocks the black form he REQUIRES the swords to draw Anti-magic in his body and etc etc.. I think i have wrote more than enough.

In fact the sword is specifically stated that there is NO magical properties to it at all, and there in lies the issue. In the Discworld, everyone and everything has even just a little bit of magic in it. The weapon having NOTHING magical makes the sword especially REAL in the Discworld. Allowing Carrot to do things with it worthy of a "king", like thrusting the sword INTO a stone.

However, due to circumstances, he accidentally gets confused for a student trying to skip class and is dragged into the school proper, through a magical barrier, by a teacher. He ends up getting enrolled in the school somehow, despite having no ability to use magic, and through a combination of sheer circumstances and aid from various characters who know his secret, keeps getting confused by other students for being an incredibly powerful magic user. My major problem with Shonen Protagonists is that they will often fall on the stereotypes that I'm just tired of seeing: Young adult who is overlooked at first but after a certain event gain powers to beat the crap out of his enemies, often relying on "Power of Friendship" where each arc have a villain with a much higher power level forces them to trains in a short amount of time to get a new power boost and often enough awakening a new transformation/Evil Side Power Up where they have to often battle against it unless they want to become Hot Topic incarnated with the options of said protagonist being as dumb as a rock overall and/or being a black hole of obliviousness about the female(s) advances on them. I already saw that once in Dragon Ball and after finishing Naruto, everything else feels like "Second Verse, Same as the First".

As much as i like the series for what it is, I feel like it just didnt have enough time to come together. I really liked the Harry Potter parody a lot, but we never really got to see much of the world or characters that live in it or what the school was really like. It always just feel like it was blazing towards its conclusion. Especially after the obligatory "tournament arc" where the main bad guy just sort of "shows up". While a decent bit of the laughs is how things abruptly begin and end (ala OPM, which this series cribs a lot from), theres just not enough downtime for the characters to breath or get to know. I think i completely forgot what magic the little brother character does because he never uses it until near the end of the manga. Just a shame really.

After Mashle, I hope we will get an anime adaptation of Mahou? Sonna Koto Yori Kinniku da! Very similar premise, with a likeable main character who focused on muscle training in a magi dominated world, to a point where he became immune to magic. Instead of being an asshole about this or the people around him looking down on him, Yuri (the mc) continues being his own goof ball self and wins the respect and admiration of people through his actions. While his goal is to inspire more people to work on their muscles, it is down right funny just how extreme his training regime is.

What I like about it too is when there is not much action happening the comedy, even if it's just anyone talking, nicely fits. It feels like actual friends roasting each other or them hanging out but it doesn't feel forced either.

Mashle appeals to a few things for me. The first is the idea of through hard work he can effectively ignore the common concepts and "rules" of the world. The second is that plans will rarely work as they should, so you are left wondering what kind of tomfoolery will get him out of it. That and the comedy got some moments that strike quite well. My personal favorite was the "sorting hat" scene. Had me dyin the first time I saw it.

Out of all the funny fights and great parody in this series, I think some of my favorite parts are whenever he gives a simple physical attack some magic attack name, and when someone calls him out and he gets so nervous that he'll be found out.

Mash is such a great protagonist because he's such a great person. He's decided the way his world works is wrong, and it has to change. He basically feels like this worlds Superman, bro showed up and started doing anything he could to improve the world around him.

I really appreciate your more moderate take on anime. Every year people seem to get more and more pretentious and critical instead of just enjoying something. Sure when something different or mold-breaking comes along it's fantastic, but that doesn't make everything else bad. Like, just fuckin enjoy the ride instead of trying to be the Roger Ebert of anime. At a certain point the only thing killing your enjoyment is your own shitty attitude.

I read it and liked it, I liked that one of the things they do is magic is more then just an ethereal thing that can only be fought against with magic, because magic of any kind can be interacted with by non-magical things, like when mash punches the rocks or when he deflects the magic orbs, the orbs don't just hit him and damage him because he can't magically block them, there's logic to them.

"You have a lightning bolt that can kill me in one hit? Good luck with that "one hit" part" - Mash, probably

My favorite part of the anime thus far has been that It never stops to take itself seriously. Mash is constantly delivering comedic relief right in the height of the action and it just makes it so easy to watch. I'm too empathetic to be able to stay invested in over the top edgy, grungy, all pain no gain type shows, it just gets exhausting. Like with one of the most recent episodes, he goes against this truly terrifying opponent that seems impossible to beat on paper. In any other show they would have really hung on making this guy scary as hell and trying to get the viewers to worry for Mash. But instead Mash just plays tennis to beat him.
