My hope is that Adam comes back as a sinner in a future season, justifying the reason for him being so shallow to have depth later. I mean, that smile he gave to Lute as he was dying has to be hinting at something. I think it would be the perfect challenge for both him and Charlie.

@@insectostrich4407 "I mean, that smile he gave to Lute as he was dying has to be hinting at something." it could be the implied that only lute was the person who stayed with them no matter what, Lillith and eve both left him, so having his third partner being the one. though him trying to reconnect with lute after being a sinner, we could get, a juicy scene of Adam trying to talk with lute, the one person who didn't leave him and was loyal to him, turn against by being loyal to his ideals, "hell is forever". and also, him coming back kind of shoots the whole Perma-death thing in the foot, the snake boi, got away with it, since he was redeemed and technically didn't die on screen. they would need a good reason to bring him back.

I think another point to emphasize with a terrible character done right or wrong in the "you're supposed to dislike them" section is how they harm those in the main cast and how lasting it is. Especially if they hurt characters we grow to root for or like for any reason Mahito is a good example of this as he murders three characters that have an effect on others in the story while maiming others permanently that leaves a deep scar on the main character, Yuji Itadori. It falls under the "Umbridge Effect" which I am surprised isn't brought up in the video since I think a hateable villain can backfire if they don't do anything that hits close to home for the audience. Like killing random NPCs wouldn't have the same effect as actions that can go from killing a beloved character to something as mundane as abusing a character that feels relatable.

One of my favorite moments in Jujutsu Kaisen is when Yuji shouts at Mahito in rage right after he kills *censored,* and then Mahito just mockingly yells back at him as if it’s a game. It shows that Mahito takes absolutely nothing seriously and loves nothing more than toying with and tormenting others, which makes the scene later on where he runs away in terror from Yuji all the more satisfying. Because in that moment, he feels the same fear and despair of all his victims due to being put in the same exact circumstances they were. I do wish Yuji got to deal the final blow and avenge his comrades instead of Kenjaku just coming completely out of nowhere to absorb him, but ah well. At least he did eventually get his comeuppance.

I think the reason why Mahito works and Adam doesn't has a few factors. 1). Mahito is a literal manifestation of Humanity's fear and hatred of each other. all of the disaster grade curses are like this, Jugo is the fear of fire, Hanami is the fear of nature, and Dagon is the fear of the ocean. Understanding this combined with his patchwork appearance, his power to mold, manipulate, and mutilate himself and others... it slots in perfectly in your mind of who he is as an individual. he is humanity's WORST. Adam by comparison requires homework. (granted the target audience of Hazbin Hotel are already familiar with the bible or at least it's opening book or 2). He's the first man, made in God's image, lived in Eden, committed the first sin along with Eve, got kicked out, lived a long but mortal life with hardship and hard work, and went to heaven. I haven't read paradise lost but they might have pulled info for that IDK. Hazbin Hotel Adam feels like your Rockstar father who dipped out of your life because of a midlife crisis and has young ladies hanging off of him young enough to be his kid. That might have been the point, that he's not a better person after millennia in heaven, but I feel it doesn't do anything with him meaningfully. 2). Mahito was introduced in chapter 16/episode 7 and has been around doing stuff since then till chapter 136/episode 47. He has been around for 129 chapters/40 episodes. While he wasn't always in focus we KNOW he's doing things in the background, plotting, and looking forward to breaking Yuji in half. Adam by comparison... had 1 season and the screen time he got didn't really do anything beneficial for his character. (granted, most of the focus was in Hell itself on developing the cast as a whole but I feel Adam's screentime was a bit underutilized.)

Yeah I kinda knew that would be your opinion of Adam's character. Personally I enjoy the heck out of him from the comedic aspect of it but also from the potential of the reverse reflection of what Charlie is trying to do. Charlie is trying to redeem people who were sent to hell and to make them better in order to get into heaven. Adam reflects the opposite of that he was probably a good soul that managed to get into heaven but since he's been there for so long no longer cares and has become what some would be worthy of hell. Personally I like the duality of that but can completely understand that that's a lot of subtext stuff and stuff you would have to read into outside of the source material (which i admit is bad writing). So it's completely understandable if somebody rejects my take given it only works outside the given material.

I feel like the reason adam was designed the way he was, is because they were planning to kill him off from the start and have lute as the main antagonist along with sera , and to show that those in heaven are not always good people though this was all at the cost of the character. While i personally like the idea of adam being reincarnated as a demon and having to be redeemed his initial purpose was to be killed off and give lute motivation

Back at it again with an interesting topic & here's my takes of terrible characters written extremely well for a main lead & villain, sorry I don't have anything for a supporting character I can think of at the top of my head also glad you brought up Mao, he's my favorite Disgaea character for what you explained alongside Travis Touchdown but to get back to what I'm saying Main Lead- Haseo from Dot Hack GU, I've brought him up before but I'll do it again because he's a character I understand where he's gone through, being betrayed, eventually losing your online friends but I also know that he acts so rude to everyone at the same time it's to cope with the loss of everything that's happening especially when that involved playing a game that took away his one friend that understands him the most & while it does get messed up how he pushes even the nicest people away like Silibus & Gaspard that was ultimately him thinking he doesn't need anyone else until learning to find more people to count on & save people comatose by AIDA was one of the growths to develop him as a better person Villain- Yuuki Terumi from Blazblue, I'm gonna be up front when I say, he's by far some of the most eviliest characters I've come across in media which is why he's such an effective threat, this man was actually the soul of a corrupt god, Susanoo, that wants to make sure the world will live off of suffering he'll always be feared about, which started by making sure to burn down a church where Ragna lives, corrupting his brother Jin by making him cut Ragna's arm off, steal his sister, Saya, all so Ragna will always remember Terumi with Rent Free Hatred in his head, which also involved torturing Noel later on by making her into Mu-12 for his ultimate grand plan of killing Amaterasu alongside brainwashing Tsubaki with the help of the Impetor, Hades: Izanami, was involved with the Ikaruga Civil War that he mind controlled Jin to start & kill so many people in the process, oh yeah AND was involved with the black beast that now polluted the world, yeah he's super evil & unlikable which it works for making such an effective bad guy as I legit hate him & impressed that the writers managed to make a villain this hatable for me & why I say he's some of the most sinister villains ever made

She has a noble goal of getting rid of the mafia who took over her home but then goes about it the wrong way by stealing the time pieces and becoming judge, jury, and executioner. Deku sympathized with Shigaraki because what they went through was quite similar (being born quirkless and loving heroes), but while Deku had All Might to lead him on the right path, Shigaraki was basically groomed by One For All since day one to become his successor. And even if Deku understands why he became evil and wants to save the young, traumatized boy still trapped inside of him, he still knows that it doesn’t excuse his actions and does whatever he can to stop him.

So there's this little game called Guardian Tales, for mobile and Nin Switch, where I have some issues with the gameplay and Season Two's writing, but even more so with the characters. From the very beginning, you meet the Dark Magician, a demonic entity seeking your kingdom's destruction for unknown reasons. Doesn't matter for any term of time but Season One's Story is centered on you journeying around to gather heroes to put an end to their deeds, facing off in the Season One Finale in a divisive-quality boss fight. In Season Two, you encounter them demoted for "incompetence", despite all the evidence to the contrary, and you never confront them about it because their living situation has gone to snuff. That and the main character is dumb. I, for one, would have no issue earning back my catharsis for every round that terrible boss fight put me through, for the actual events of Season One which she orchestrated and for the writing to steal wholesale the good ending I earned through Season One. Despite this, I think she's a good terrible character who's earned her hate-able reputation and is treated as such. Sohee, the champion of the Magic Academy chapter, is the pinnacle of a terrible character who gets treated as the good guy and thus never, except in one very short instance, gets comeuppance. She's the Science! geek who the story has to manufacture the circumstance in which she gets added to the plot, does good only for her ego and willfully ignorantly destroys the fun of everyone around her and argues when she's confronted. All that would be fine for an unlikable character, but come Season Two Chapter 14, Sohee erroneously asserts misinformation and misinterpretation of the events which led up to the current situation and ends up getting the main antagonist (who is actually well in the right and is the Heroic figure in the chapter) in a terminally sealed situation (As in, a living seal for the actual evil entity and knowingly not strong enough to live very long afterwards). Sohee then gets praised for this at the end of chapter. And to think there's more! In an early side story chapter, there's a mind control drug being distributed through school, and she gets affected by it when she gets the faintest of praise. Sohee disposes one of the main antagonists and asserts an entire wing of the school to serve her ego. When confront and defeated about it, it turns out she was never under the influence of the drug, and gets no punishment for doing any of her actions. It really speaks to me that she is promoted as a "poster child" for the game while being an irredeemable fucking cunt where there are so many other great characters that should be praised and uplifted from obscurity.

Okay this is on topic, The Coffin of Andy and Leyley the titular siblings are terrible people but written in two different amazing ways. Andrew (Andy) is a sociopath that try’s to be normal although is successful until they go on the run and genuinely loves Ashley(leyley) even though he has been blackmailed by leyley since he was a child. Ashley is a girl who has been neglected by her parents and ostracized by her peers and sees herself as unlovable so she manipulates Andrew with the aforementioned blackmail to keep him with her and only her (and will do ANYTHING to keep him around). The game is very apparent that as endearing as their relationship is it’s still mutually abusive co-dependent with both parties being horrible people, but amazing characters.

Demon Slayer I think is an interesting beast as logically you should hate all the demons but the series also plays with nuiance in that while some like Enmu, Hantengu and Gyokko were horrible from the start and just became worse as demons, others like Gyutaro, Daki and especially Akaza became demons out of desperation due to circumstances they had no control over, thus you on some level understand their reasoning and even want to see them get another shot as while they were horrible you also aks wouldn't you be just as awful if put in their shoes.

My problem with the sympathetic demons from demon slayer is that their backstory is only revealed when they are close to death instead of slowly being told to us. So when their backstory is revealed its kinda shallow since its so last minute.

My pitch into this is Evolt, he is down to his alien bones scum (Spoilers for anyone who's yet to see Kamen Rider Build) Evolt was introduced to us as the cafe owner (I forgot his name, been a while) during this time, we don't quite know yet this is Evolt or the fact that Evolt was a character in the first place, we only know of this mysterious pseudo rider called Blood Stalk (Or Stark, but stalk makes more sense to me) Blood Stalk is technically an ally of Night Rogue but he's sort of a wild card that although does work to further NR's plan, has acted in a way to suggest that there's more to him, after all, he's the only character whom we never saw out of his transformation, until the fateful reveal where the truth is finally brought to light. The cafe owner is Blood Stalk, or more accurately Evolt is the Cafe Owner and he's also Blood Stalk, he's also the one who made Sento the man he is now, he's the one to sow the seeds of a hero in Sento, who we find out is a Non-person, existing within someone else's body (Similar to Alice from SAO: Alicization) This broke Sento, knowing he's just a pawn in Evolt's plan, but that's too much detail so to stop beating around the bush, we find out that all the events in the show up until that point and what's to come have all be orchestrated and planned by Evolt, its all his grand design and everyone is hopeless, yet there seems to be a mutual sense of respect between him and Sento (Banjo too) since all 3 of them are essentially parallels of each other, Sento essentially being Evolt's son in a messed up way and Banjo too although Banjo feels more like a little brother. at the end Evolt ends up becoming another "Final boss" character in any Kamen rider show but what sets him apart is his presence throughout the entire series, for example, in Fourze, the principal was the main villain, we rarely if ever see the principal be a character and we only ever see him act much in the later half of the show, in contrast Evolt has always been there, from the start, we just never knew it, and he's a major part of the cast, an ever present face, his betrayal held more meaning and him falling to the dark side is less a fall but more so a veil being lifted. That concludes my input, now for a comment That Mahito vs Adam comment intrigued me, because I think there is a reason why Adam objectively is inferior to Mahito in terms of writing. Expectation, yes, expectation of what the character is to become, now Adam of course is at a disadvantage here because he's not original, he's a caricature of a pre-existing characterz With Mahito he's introduced as a Cursed spirit, a being that has been described to be a sort of anomaly and impurity in the world, a creature of malice, his species itself already meant to be the opposition, and when we get to see and know him he is off rip a manipulative maniac that cares not for human life, because to him, humans to him are what cursed spirits are to human, an impurity, an opposition. it makes it clear and through his actions too that there's not even a smidge of light for him, Mahito from the beginning is written to be a vile existence who gains euphoria from the suffering of humans Contrast with Adam Adam is the progenitor of humanity, he's meant to be holy but fell from grace due to temptation, but he did later on rose up in the ranks to become what he is, its already clear to us that, regardless whether or not you're divine or not, you can fall from grace as Adam did in the past, which makes it weird now to see Adam exhibit behavior that befits a sinner while maintaining his position, it would be much more interesting to have a "False righteousness" character instead of a caricature of what the writer deems to be a bad person (Yes I know the whole thing about Vivzie's writing having a "brand" of sorts) that aside Adam acting in such a way, worse than some sinners while being in a position where he should have a moral high ground feels weird and feels like its just meant to be satirical and cynical which isn't bad per se, just leaves a bad taste in the mouth and makes the character just as memorable and a tokusatsu monster of the week (From Kamen rider and Super Sentai specifically because Godzilla and Ultraman Kaiju gets more love)

I don't like how Adam is portrayed in Hazbin Hotel, but I think there might be some nuance. Adam was sent to Heaven, but we don't know the criteria for exactly letting someone be there. My theory is that Adam might have been virtuous to some degree, and when he came to Heaven, he might not have developed but regressed into his worst trait, causing him to act like he does, as he saw in the series.

*SPOILERS FOR ACE ATTORNEY JUSTICE FOR ALL* When it comes to great terrible characters. One of the first characters that comes to mind is Matt Engarde, at first you think that he’s just some dude who acts weird and is weak willed, but as Farewell my Turnabout continues we truly get to see him for the piece of trash he truly is. I think this quote from him truly depicts who he is as a person “Let me tell you something. I'm not like Adrian. I don't depend on anyone. People are simply things to be used. Used and thrown away. Put on a sweet, innocent face, and people will swallow anything you feed them. Adrian fell for it. The assassin too. Oh, and how can I forget. Even you fell for it, Mister Lawyer! Everyone, all working their butts off for me, Matt Engarde!” This makes him easily one of the most hatable characters in the series, but that’s what makes him such a great villain, and it also makes the moment when he’s finally cornered and has nowhere to escape so satisfying.

One of the international disliked characters is the Garcias from Beyblade. From the first episode, I knew I would hate them. They use dirty tricks to win and was never punished or banned. They even return to start a company! How does that happen!? I'm so happy for every time they are defeated like most disliked characters.

To this day i don't think Adam should had been fully offensive and bad. And funny enough the answer is on his music. He should despise Sinners...but for a weird point he should be fully nice with Charlie,because she is not one of then. So until Charlie started to actually buy a fight,she should have that really annoying guy that talks with her normaly but sh*t talks her people. We could had Adam not still be great as angel,but at least understanble of why he is tolerable there. But the 1-20 should be purely with Sinners.

Honestly a terrible character I like is Frieza and that is just because of how much his character has been changed through dragon ball z and super. He is a genocidal maniac, with a body count in the possible trillions and he does it all with glee. Yet when he killed the saiyans we learn he did it because he was scared of them and wanted them out of the way (before super retconned that). He's just this unstoppable force who the heroes can never really beat, but all they can just do is match him for a few moments. Hell even Goku was struggling with him and was only alive because Frieza was a sadist who wanted to torment him. It wasn't until Goku went Super saiyan that we finally got to see him get his ass kicked. He seems to be what Adam was trying to be. I mean let's be honest for all of Frieza being an asshole, he has had a lot of funny moments, where you actually forget that he is a geocidal maniac, but with Adam even his funny moments just show he is an asshole. For example with Frieza see him watching Ginyu dance and just pausing, or better yet when Goku asks him to explain what repugnant is... and he acutally does it.

If yes then there are a ton of "heroes" i would consider to be terrible like Bakugo. But tbf you should differntiate between sassy characters and assholes.

And you're right MangaKamen, even the noblest intentions can get twisted. That's why I love Thanos as a villain. He had a noble intention, solving the overpopulation crisis, but the way he solves it is terrible, and there are always alternatives. Perhaps he thinks killing half of the earth's population is the fastest way to solve it, or maybe he thinks building a planet where other people would travel at would be problematic and such. However, he does have a point: Overpopulation was what destroyed his own planet, so now he felt like he should prevent this from ever happening to other planets.

Adam, kinda embodies what I think the biggest issue with Hazbin hotels narrative is and it's that it's so black and white when it comes to it's characters. Everyone is in hell for a reason but when you look at a lot of characters they don't really seem like they deserve to be in hell. There's some exceptions but the number of sinners we see in the show that don't seem deserving of their fate out numbers those who deserve it. This is mostly due to the fact that none of the characters human lives are ever explored leaving out so much nuance to the writing. Then you got a character like Adam who really should not get away with anything he does and still be in heaven. It's a black and white narrative in a story with a concept that by it's very nature does not work like that.

@@nightmarearcade2663 there’s issue with this statement. The heaven & hell operate on black & white morality what people don’t get. The idea of nuance is inherently against this world and so the writing and setting are fighting each there are times it would go for nuance or objectively black & white. Now are there exceptions sure but they’re not rule a bad person can do good things and vice verse case in point angel dust is a bad person but does do good things the only person to not follow this is sir pentious and that is part of a whole other problem with this show. Also the exorcist are the functional equivalent to executioners while sinners are prisoners specifically death row and so they are not doing anything wrong cuz they’re guilty along with getting rid of the worst of the worst

@@nightmarearcade2663 It is pretty ironic that the show tries to make it seem like the world isn't black and white yet bends over backwards to present the Sinners in Hell as misunderstood and worthy of redemption while Angels are pretty much all presented as stuck-up elitists. Viv basically nuked or damaged her own story in order to try and stick to this obviously flawed premise.

Thank you. Adam is literally the best part of the series. People don’t really think about this, but as the first man he’s seen all of humanity grow. Every genocide, invasion, and war. He is justified in hating the sinners that harmed the virtuous souls in Heaven. Also, he’s only really shown interacting with people he hates for the most part. Aside from Lute, Sera, and the Exorcists. But that was too brief to really get a good look at how he treats people.

I do feel like they had something with Adam but didn't capitalize on it. I do like the scene ep 6 with him not actually knowing how people get in to heaven. I feel like if they leaned in to that more we could've had something interesting. I kinda wish he wasn't sidelined for the majority of the show. Doesn't help that in the first scene where he's introduced is IMO the worst scene in the show. I don't loath him or anything, I just kinda think he does the bare minimum. I like his design and his song slaps, so there's that I guess. Viv said that the primary villains for season 2 will be the V's so I hope they turn out better. As for hateable villains I like the most, I really like Lord Shen from KFP 2. I feel he does the self fulfilling prophecy story very well. I like his contrast with Po and how he represents how Po could've turned out if he gave in to his resentment.

8:08 Honestly my problem with Adam is he really is so one note, he acts like a stereotypical frat bro right down to his dialogue when logically he should have more depth to him. He could've easily been a "The ends justify the means" or "Cleaning up my mistake" kind of villain, since he is the father of humanity and thus could've been written to feel a great amount of responsibility for the Sinners since he was tempted by the Apple and thus kills them as his way of apologizing to God for his screw up. It could've been a way to offer a solid counterpoint to Charlie's whole premise with Adam presenting thousands of examples of horrible people who deserved to be exorcized. But because Viv clearly has a hate boner for Christianity, nope, let's just make him as unlikeable as possible.
