Great content as always Chris. I agree with you on the light blue shirts. It can soften the contrast between shirt and tie. I have started to wear cream or ivory colored shirts when I am not in the mood for light blue or a plain white shirt lets the contrast looks to harsh. I am a lover of ties with stripes. I have learned that some color combinations and stripe arrangements are officially reserved for certain regiments, military branches or educational institutions. Before I buy a tie with stripes I check that I do not overstep boundaries. I have a tie which looks similar to the official Royal Navy tie. The order of the white and red stripes are reversed and run in American fashion (American striped ties come up to the right). I have no problem to wear this particular necktie in the US or in my country of origin Switzerland. I would never wear it in the UK because it is too close to the original Royal Navy tie. Just as a reminder, check your tie and the possible affiliation when it comes with stripes or emblems on it and stay out of trouble.

Thank you Kay. Glad you enjoyed the video, I regularly wear a cream or off white shirt as it softens the harshness of a white shirt 🙂 Don't get me wrong there is definitely a place for the crisp white shirt for that business look or a wedding, but sometimes an off white shirt just bridges the contrast between the colour of the jacket and the tie, softening the over all look. Striped ties are great and I fully understand your concerns about the affiliations of a tie with private clubs, Universities, military etc. I have said this earlier to someone else but I would re-iterate, I have no personal issue with them - I am a member of a number of clubs, a member of 2 university Alumni and a veteran, so I have no problems wearing them - but I do not ever wear a striped tie unless I'm sure it is not associated with an organisation, club, or university I'm not entitled to wear. Traditional British regimental stripes are "cut to the heart" from the right hip diagonally up towards the left shoulder and vice-versa in America up to the right shoulder from the left hip. I can see how the association with specific groups might be a concern for you, but it is easy to buy non affiliated ties (Repp ties) from most stores. Buying second-hand is were the mistakes are generally made.👍🙂 A good point you raise Kay, if in doubt don't wear it. Thanks for your continued support👍🙂

Great advice Chris, thank you. It's remarkable how much thought and attention one can put into shirt collars and ties. Thinking of collars ( and I hope this is not off topic) what do you think of button down collars? I quite like them and got into them, so to speak, as I often wear open neck shirts with crew neck jumpers and find they prevent one of your shirt collars sticking out while your other collar remains tucked in. Not a good look! Also I wear them with ties, which I find helps hold your tie together and prevents showing that part of your tie which should be under your collar. I appreciate that this may not be the most formal look but I would be interested in your opinion of button - down shirts. I must also check out your video on the five tie knots. All the best, Bernard.

Hi Bernard, thank you for your thoughtful message. I completely agree that shirt collars and ties offer a fascinating realm for personal expression in menswear. Button-down collars, in particular, should not be over looked and bring a versatile and practical touch to one's wardrobe. Your insight into using button-down collars to prevent them from sticking out when wearing open-neck shirts with crew neck jumpers is spot on. It's a subtle yet effective solution to maintain a polished informal look. The choice to wear them with ties tends to be a more American way of dressing or preppy look, but it does add a touch of style to an informal wear. While some may consider button-down collars less formal, they undeniably offer a timeless and classic aesthetic. They're perfect for various occasions, striking a balance between casual and smart casual. Your personal style preferences and the situations you find yourself in will guide whether button-down collars are the right choice for you. I appreciate your interest in my video on tie knots, and I hope you find it helpful. Thank you for your support🙂👍

I never wear shiny silk ties anymore. I prefer a matt finished silk. I also have a couple of knitted ties for texture. I'm also unsure of striped ties as they might refer to a college, regiment or sports club that I'm not a member of. Instead, I tend to go for polkadot or solid colours. What do you think Chris? BTW, I always enjoy your content.

Hi Billy, I totally get your preference for matt-finished silk and knitted ties - they add a nice touch of texture. As for striped ties, I have no personal issue with them - I am a member of a number of clubs, a member of 2 university Alumni and a veteran so I have no problems wearing them - but I do not ever wear a striped tie unless I'm sure it is not associated with an organisation, club, or university I'm not entitled to wear. I can see how the association with specific groups might be a concern for you, but it is easy to buy non affiliated ties from most stores, buying second-hand is were the mistakes are generally made. Your leaning towards polka dots and solid colours is a safe way of avoiding this and they're classic and versatile. It's all about finding what suits your style, right? What's your favourite tie in your collection?👍🙂

Excellent content, Chris, with lots of sound advice. Having bought some 20 ties online over the past 18 months, all of them with particular outfits in mind, let's just say I have experienced quite a learning curve! Apart from silk vs polyester, there has also been the obvious variation of widths and the less obvious, but all important, method of construction. I have discovered that a quality handmade tie is a world away from a machine-made one. I have also learnt that a tie is a good opportunity to introduce an alternative texture into an outfit. I now have several wool ties in my collection, and Shantung silk is a newer addition. Sixty-four years after I first put a strip of coloured material around my neck, every day is still a school day…but now it is a lot more fun than it was back then!

Great to hear from your again John. Glad you enjoyed the video content. You have have without doubt become enthused and reinvigorated of late and it is great to see you having a zest for dressing and dressing well🙂Adding texture is a great addition to a persons wardrobe and the next step up in sartorialism in my opinion🙂 Shantung silt ties are fantastic for a relaxed more informal wear. Every day is a learning day and its great to hear you are enjoying learning something new everyday. Great to hear about your experiences 🙂👍

BD Sir, would you please help with and share some advice on the Prince Albert knot. I’m a big fan of DITD (“devil in the details”) so the PA knot is an expression of that for me. I’m having trouble making the knot full enough to work with the spread of my collar(traditional,semi spread ish… definitely not cutaway or anything excepting of a Full Windsor). More importantly is, how do I avoid creating so many wrinkles when I pull the blade through to finish the knot? Am I wrapping round to tightly possibly? Does it depend on the type of silk? I’m looking for tips and advice on the one knot I prefer to use as much as possibly can. Thanks very very 🙏👊!
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 5 ай бұрын
Hi there, I would suggest that you need to wear a 7 fold tie - they are thicker, the type of silk shouldn't affect the knot, it is possible you are over tightening the knot when making it and the thickness of the tie does affect the fullness of the knot. Here is a video related to solely to the Prince Albert knot, I hope it helps. 👍🙂kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWO7couaqsaBe6c

Sir, what do you think of Cordings of Piccadilly?
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 5 ай бұрын
they are a good company who started in 1839 at 231 The Strand. Charles Mackintosh patented his process of dissolving rubber and binding it to cotton in the 1800s. By 1843, he had perfected the vulcanisation process, and John Cording started to manufacture the waterproof coats generically known as 'Mackintosh' still sold today. Cordings name was synonymous with outdoor living and the store was the first port of call for the explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley when he wanted to put a properly-shod foot forward on his path to find Dr Livingstone in 1871. So they have a long history of making/providing good quality outdoor clothing. In 1877, the business transferred to 19 Piccadilly and there they have remained to this day. They are a little bit pricey, but their items last and are of good quality. Hope that helps, they do a exceptional pair of corduroy trousers in my personal experience👍🙂
