The AntVenom Soylent Controversy

Incoming book, but tl;dr before I write it, I understand why people clown on me for this ad. For all of the well-intentioned individuals out there who don't hate on me for this ad, but are otherwise just acknowledging that making this ad was a bad idea, I get it, and at this point I agree with you. I'm not mad at anybody with that point of view. My issue is with those who cross the line from criticism into genuine vitriol and hatred over a bean that isn't harmful in the ways they've convinced themselves, and that's the issue that comes like a rain that never ends. There's a never ending stream of people who talk about it. And as the years go on, for every one person who stops talking about it, another takes their place, and it never ends. At times, it feels like absolutely nobody who comments about this issue feels empathy at all. Well, not nobody, but it can certainly feel that way whenever its discussed. But again, that's a grave I dug for myself. Even if I delete the ad, which I often consider doing, the hatred won't stop. If anything, I would bet it would get worse. Honestly though, I would hardly say I've "ruined my reputation" over it. So long as I don't bring it up again on my KZbin channel, I would imagine the vast majority of my viewers wouldn't care, or even know it was an "issue" in the first place. But @rml_366, if you want to know how I didn't see this coming, let me explain that to you, and holy shit are people probably going to dig at me even harder for this explanation. But whatever. Don't take anything I say as absolute fact. It's just my point of view. I just want to be honest with you all for a few minutes. I was making content pretty consistently leading up to the beginning of COVID, but around the time COVID started, I began lightly smoking weed. I say lightly, because it was just something I did on the weekend with my partner. She was out of a job due to COVID, and we just hung out playing games a lot. At the time, weed by itself didn't feel like an issue, and maybe it never was, but as 2020 progressed into 2021, I found that my desire to work on content, or to do much of anything was waning a lot. If making the Soylent ad was a lapse in foresight / judgment, I would say that not realizing that weed was a potential issue that I needed to address was another lapse for me. Whether or not weed actually played a role is something that I'm sure the internet would love to debate in another vitriolic shit-fight, but by the time mid-2021 rolled around, I didn't think about it that way yet. What I was concerned about was my lack of desire to do much of anything. I convinced myself this was due to ADHD related reasons, which in fairness I do have to some degree, and I spoke with my doctor about it in August of 2021. He prescribed me Adderall XR 20mg to try and combat this, and to some degree, that actually helped for a few months. I made some of the best content I've ever made in the months following, and I felt more excited to... exist, maybe more than I had ever felt before. For anybody paying attention to my content at that time, especially with this knowledge, it was easy to see that something was going on with me based on the content I was making. How excited I was feeling all the time led me to believe that I was going down the right path. But, this solution didn't last. In February of 2022, when I talked with my doctor about this solution no longer working, he suggested it was time for me to double my dosage. This was something I had a LOT of difficulty handling, and it really began to warp me as a person. I developed tinnitus during this period, which... suckssssssss, as I still deal with it today. I can tell you with full honesty that I went through the worst period of my life in 2022. I hoped that this "solution" would ultimately work in the long run, and that things would eventually level off. Some days I felt great, but in aggregate I was falling apart pretty quickly. On the day that I found out that Technoblade had passed, on July 1st of 2022, I was an emotional wreck. On that same day, I gave up Adderall cold turkey, but my intake of weed picked up drastically to cope with it, and that didn't end until earlier this year. If I was having it every weekend or so before July of 2022, it became a near daily occurrence after. When I made the Soylent ad in May/June of 2022, I was going through one of those "hyper excited" periods. For whatever reason, I never processed the issue that people would have with the ad. I couldn't tell you today exactly what I was thinking two years ago, but the idea of advertising a decent tasting meal replacement drink wasn't something I had an issue with. Those kinds of ads are all over KZbin today with companies like Huel and Ctrl. My cardinal sin was advertising a drink that, again, had a bean in it that uninformed boys found offensive and scary. To those individuals, I'm sorry that your masculinity is so fragile and your knowledge of how soy's phytoestrogen works is so misplaced. Have you ever had soy sauce before? There's an entire culture wherein soy sauce is a main-stay of their diet. Seriously. You know the funny part is? I don't even drink the shit anymore lmao, and I haven't since I made the ad. Ironic in a twisted sort of way. So why did I spill my guts in the comments section of a drama video about my Soylent ad? Well, you know how I talked about the whole self-harm issue in that tweet that has become one of my biggest online life regrets up to this point? The whole issue over people leaving non-stop comments about the Soylent ad was just an issue piled on top of the very real issues I was dealing with in private, but the comments about that alone were a very small slice of a much bigger shit-pie that I was dealing with. I was dealing with my entire life falling apart because I was losing my mind. Seriously. Imagine that you were losing your mind, and at the same time the entire internet was dog-piling on you over an entirely separate issue, non-stop, every day, in perpetuity. If I were only dealing with criticism over the Soylent ad, but otherwise my life was fine and dandy, I doubt it would have affected me as badly as it did. I probably would have rolled with the punches better. After multiple failed attempts at giving up weed, in March of this year, I was able to, and at the same time began exercising every day (a 30 minute run every day), in an attempt to regain some amount of excitement over... living. I wanted to treat my body and mind correctly, because my desire to work on content... or to do much of anything STILL hadn't returned to me yet. I was able to maintain weed abstinence, and consistent exercise for the entire month, during which time I did get a video done that I legitimately had fun making, and in all honesty I physically felt better than I ever had (and I was close to being able to run non-stop for the full half hour of exercise), but I entirely relapsed on that in April, and had difficulty shaking it until literally last week. For my own sake, I hope I'm able to stick with the plan this time. I feel like I can and will, but time will tell. Maybe making this post was yet another massive mistake that I'll regret forever as well, but right now I feel good about it. Also, side-note. I can sooooooooooooo see this post turning into an argument about there being literally nothing wrong with weed. And for many people, that may be the case. Everyone's mind works in different ways. People operate in different ways, and for some who consume it, it may be what keeps them sane, or keeps them functioning. But for me, things that I put in my system tend to linger for a while. So while I might feel very excited in the hours following having a smoke, I would feel the opposite effect as a sort of "whiplash" that would start 3+ hours later, and last for days, if not weeks, slowly diminishing as time went on. I don't know for sure if this crap has ever been "my problem", but I'm not gonna find out by continuing to use it. I hope you enjoyed my TED Talk. All sponsor products/services on YT are trash and most are also scummy. I appreciate big channels who don't do sponsors and instead rely on patreon. If you take a sponsor, fine. Whatever. I will assume you don't actually support the company itself and just want their money. But some of these content creators genuinely support the product/service they shill. That's a bigger problem than the actual sponsors existing. I do appreciate when a creator can make a good joke/skit out of the sponsor segment though (CalebCity is a prime example, he makes them watchable and entertaining, even though I'll never buy a product from a sponsor)
