I knew a crew member who was working on this film back in the day in Berlin. She said that it was the most amazing and fun production she did in her entire carreer. There was such an abundance of money (and white powder), and everybody who was involved knew that the whole thing was a giant tax write-off for Golan. You can still find most of the filming locations today. It would be fun doing "Apple Sightseeing Tours", but the film is never shown in Germany and nobody knows of its existence.

I think it is that consumerism consumes you. Whether literally buying something or over indulging in sex or what not, this behavior slowly destroys you. That is why there is religious (Christian) under/overtones in the film. Sin is not that you act on them, but that you let that sin consume the life that was given to you by God. They definitely did a very poor job of doing biblical allegory, but I did catch the reference to revelations where IIRC everybody has to wear the mark of the beast to do any business and that is one of the ways the devil will control people before the apocalypse ends earth. So this thing is a weird ineptly made revelations/apocalypse musical. Still found it hilarious though. I think the "actual actual vampire" was a producer. From IMDB trivia: "The film originally began with a sequence in which Mr. Topps (aka God) creates the world. He sings the song "Creation" and brings various creatures including Alphie to life, then he sings a song with Mr. Boogalow (aka The Devil), who ultimately falls into a stream and disappears. Live animals, humans, puppets and people in costumes filled a small set. Mishaps abounded as a tiger got loose, the elephants got their trunks stuck in set pieces, people wearing a brontosaurus costume collapsed from the heat, and the terrain and restrictive size of the set proved difficult for the actors to dance through and cameras to maneuver. The omission of this disastrous shoot makes the biblical ending of the movie seem completely random."

Apparently there's a prologue where Mr. Topps creates the first human (the main dude) and sends him to earth. There's a pretty interesting background to the movie if you do a quick search; the initial idea came from a couple of musicians who where disillusioned with the music industry and wanted to make a stage musical in which they criticized the stereotypical evil producer, in the vein of 1984. Menahem Golan got a hold of the project and pretty much completely rewrote the music and general tone. Not strange if you are somewhat aware of his shenanigans and wild ambitions.

Yes, in the 80's we were expecting flying cars and moon bases by 1999 because the rate of technological development was exploding exponentially. However, it was drastically underestimated how much research would be required to get that tech, assuming that the same amount of research that got us from 1960 tech to 1980, would get us from 1980 to Star Trek. So you see a lot of 80's movies set in the "far future" of 1995 etc and there's always flying cars, lasers, and wicked flashy stuff, because FUTURE!

So, I have seen this movie prior to this posting, honestly, I used the fast forward liberally so I can't really say I have watched it all the way through, however, this review is fabulous and a joy to watch! Really much better than watching the movie, but that isn't even why I enjoyed the review so much; you really are brilliant. Love you much: much; much, much.

There’s a documentary about the director of this film, Menahem Golan. The title is “Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films”.
