As someone who lives in a rural area, I always struggled to find groups to socialise with locally. VRChat has allowed me to make friends and social groups who I meet up with, in a way that feels close to hanging out IRL, multiple times a week. When you compare it to talking on Discord or Zoom or something, there's just no comparison. I know it has a bad rep because of the creeps and weirdos, but it's also full of cool trans people and furries, and if you find the right people and hang out in invite-only instances and ignore the rest of the chaos, it's wonderful. I am worried about lock-down from the companies that control these spaces, though, and that's why I decided to join a company working on open source VR technologies, so no single company can own that space. I fear VRChat having a Twitter take-over moment, and I hope real alternatives exist before anything like that happens.

I think part of the issue is that most of the marketing for VR is just very dumb. All the companies, except VALVE, are marketing it as a device as a thing to live in, instead of just a way to play games and try alternative social experiences. Also, VRChat has been helpful in combating my social anxiety.

This is honestly a great summary. The problem (as always) isn't the technology itself, but the way it's being presented. As you said, apart from valve (and the other explicitly for-gaming brands), it's presented as something that basically sticks with you 24/7, overtaking all forms of human experience. I love games like Beat Saber and Pistol Whip because they make you focus on music and distract you from how uncomfortable doing something strenuous is. It's like playing an indoor sport. I LOVE Swordsman on the PS VR2. I'm not really a console gamer, grew up with the PC, but getting to swordfight without clunky controls is soo good! They recently added bows, and it's really cool how my IRL bow skills still transfer to the game. I don't shoot my actual bow much due to a lack of a range, so it's nice to be able to do it without going outside the city.

You actually can't move around a lot in VR, because your brain doesn't like it to see movement while not feeling any. VR is more static then screen-based games. Which is part of the reason it's not overtaking the market, besides the fact that plenty of people immediatly get sick using VR, even without it trying to show movement into any direction. This also means it's quite limited in the workout you can do with it. And I also wouldn't like to have one of those things on my face while sweating from a workout.

@dereinzigwahreRahl hard disagree, personally. I've worked out consistently and more times total in the past 18 months since I got my Quest 2 (and PSVR2) than I ever have in the entire 12 years of attempting to build a workout routine prior to VR. VR exercise is *endogenously* rewarding, it'sfun, so I keep doing it! Also, the nausea issues are overstated. There are multiple hardware/software/behavioural fixes to address nausea that are/can be implemented that reduce or eliminate nausea. I've had a few games make me a bit nauseated at first, but I've never once had that from a fitness game. And regarding the sweat, I'm getting sweaty either way, so the headset really doesn't bother me.

Oh man, I JUST tried Pistol Whip last night and it's ABSOLUTELY BADASS! I enjoyed it so goddam much. It was such a satisfying workout. I really feel it in my core, butt and legs. I went for well over an hour without realizing how long it'd been because it's so damn fun! Supernatural is also absolutely fantastic for a full-body workout. The music variety is insane and they add new playlists every day.

Workout isn't the only thing VR can excel at. Unsurprisingly, it's also AMAZING for building an immersive atmosphere, and games like "Into the radius" (a game inspired by Stalker) make excellent use of that. It really feels like you're actually *there,* in Eastern Europe.

Issues like famine, climate change, genocide, privacy violations, apartment buildings just exploding (like in that movie I mentioned), History being destroyed, etc. It also reminds me of Fahrenheit 451. People in that have parlor TVs on all their walls and use entertainment to escape everything, there is a nuclear war going on in the background and no one cares because no one cares about history or death or anything, entertainment is all that matters, it’s horrible. Again entertainment and escapism isn’t always bad but in these circumstances it’s very scary to me.

VR has been huge for me. Being able to move/physicalise in the game means that I can actually enjoy playing games that I don’t really enjoy just sitting at a monitor, it also means I can exercise in a way that makes me feel comfortable and powerful and convenient and it’s the first time I’ve really been able to exercise consistently! I don’t play VR everyday or anything, but every couple of days for 20-60 minutes is my limit and it’s been awesome!

Oh dude, have you tried Pistol Whip on Quest 2 or PSVR2?? I've been hooked on VR fitness for 18 months since I got Quest 2, and I just tried Pistol Whip last night. HOLY SHIT! I see multiple practical applications for this. 1. resizing monitor instead of buying new ones. 2. Multiple monitor setup, again without buying new ones 3. The monitor thing is nice and all but you can't share that with anyone unless they have another 3500$ headset. Great, you spent 7000$ to probably use a 3 monitor setup or one big one to watch movies (at 1080p because you're broke from the headset) I'm for more affordable and basic AR. Gimme AR glasses where I can put empty frames on my walls and fill them with pictures when I put a 150$ headset on. That's cool.

Art exists in vr though . Vr is a new medium that can bring you diverse experiences and new forms of art. Microsoft has had AR goggles focused on business applications for seven years, doesn't seem like much came of it. They recently canceled its third generation. Edit: To elaborate, a major problem with this sort of thing is that it requires widespread adoption to merit investment in developing software for it, but nobody wants to buy an expensive piece of hardware that doesn't have any software to run. It's the same reason almost all VR games are either low-budget indie projects or ports of games that were designed for traditional hardware. The major exception that comes to mind, Half-Life Alyx, having been made by a studio that could afford to lose a ton of money attempting to make a "killer app" for their headset and didn't have shareholders who could tell them no.

The saddest part is there are massive sectors in which technology could grow to miraculously better our lives. for example transhumanist technologies could end diesease, disability and aging. However technological progress has always been linked to public R&D, thus in our neoliberal era that faucet is being dried and thus private corporations don't have the new "moonshot" or "50 years of R&D in semiconductor material technology" to make the next great thing, so they try to sell bullcrap. 10 years/5% GDP. That's what the US had to do to go from being unable of launching a rocket to landing on the moon, the technology derived from that has transformed our liives. Another "moonshot" in transhumanism would revolutionaize quality of life, lifespans and productiity and even give the US massive amounts of soft power (becoming a medical "lifegiver" for all ailments is one of the strongest ways to get allies without having to use the barrel of a gun)but the Us would rather waste money in useless weapons like railguns and the zummwalt and cut taxes for the rich than think slightly more long term than half a year.

I'm not even mad about the high price, the tech is pretty revolutionary. Its also kind of a "beta" that's targeted towards developers and enthusiasts. There are rumors that a $1,500 model coming later next year. What I'm excited for is the 3rd or later future versions of this device. When its smaller and even faster and cheaper. It is a revolutionary device, it really is. The beginning of a new era, so to speak. These things have to evolve over time. The original iPhone didn't have the App Store. The Vision is going to have kinks and issues that will take time to work out and build on. I'm excited to see how other tech companies try to out do Apple and each other as they all get into this space.

"But I struggle to understand what this can offer you, that a monitor can't". well for once he's talking about the actual product, it gives you nothing a screen couldn't whilst with AR in general (on a scale where you can safely expect most people to have access to something like what google lens was trying to be, with a battery life beyond 2 hours, that you could carry around like you carry your phone) you could do cool shit now i don't think his examples go past a cute gimmick but he's not contradicting himself either

I just don't see VR being a wild change in how I'd do things, that makes my life easier. Which is what made me get a smartphone. I could see it having some advantages for some things. Like, maybe for some kind of system to assist in controlling a thing remotely? Maybe for driving a car, to give you a better HUD or more spatial awareness?

I like the idea of augmented reality. It seems useful to the handyman in me. Like if I need help unclogging my sink, I can throw on a headset and have an experienced plumber see what i see and help guide me. Also the example Vaush used. Like construction workers mapping out electric lines and water lines during construction so if you have have to make repairs you see a projection of what joints are where and what lines go where. Like that you can get right to work and not have to guess where you need to smash in the dry wall

The main thing I like about AR is that it is the only interface which has the potential to allow the body to move freely, an instant change of position, type of seat, head angle, location, with no fuss. This may not be important for other jobs but working in motion graphics and 3D I spend waayyy too much time locked up in a chair because I need a proper big screen and often a beefy PC next to me. Other than that I’m sure it would be amazing just walking through parks whilst being productive or working remotely, taking that meaning to the next level whilst bathing in the sunshine, enjoying fresh air and bird chirps all day if you choose to…

OK, I agree with you that just the headset alone, really might as well get a much cheaper and higher resolution monitor. Vr games tho are a totally different matter, practically a whole different medium from monitor games. Just like movies didn't replace books, and games didn't replace movies. Vr games won't replace regular games. I think there will always be things that screen games can do better than vr games, one of which is that you don't always want fully immersion into an enviroment, that can in many cases be pointless to the experience or outright detrimental. But what vr games do they can do very well, which artistically I think we're only scratching the surface of. The apple vision is dumb, in part because it is so expencive, and in part because it is trying to be a replacement for a traditional computer, which it is bad at because it isn't that.

The thing VR gave me was motivation to do sports, I play beat saber and am pretty high rank. This game made me look like I do sports, I think buying my Valve Index was one of the best choices I've ever made. But you are right, it's "just a delivery thing" and it was way cheaper "only" 1080€.

The AR stuff you talk about at the end sounds a lot like the world in Scarlet Nexus. Underrated gem of a game IMO, unsure if it'd be your cup of tea, given some of your media takes, but the aesthetic and delivery are absolutely phenomenal IMO. Anyone reading this, go play Scarlet Nexus rn. It's probably the most Anime piece of media you've yet consumed, but it's a good time.

Just had a conversation with my 65+ father about this... so long as we have to wear some goggle contraption, virtual reality will never move past video gaming. We imagine Star Trek.. automatic everything, intuitive controls and an all-knowing computer voice from the void. We imagined holograms. Until then, it's only slightly more neat as what Nintendo's Virtua Boy was. Incrementally neat.

Hard, hard disagree. I've had many incredibly rewarding experiences in VR. I also have done VR fitness x3 per week almost every week (aside from injury) for the past 18 months since I got my Quest 2, and I have never in my entire life been able to stick to fitness like that before!

@Br VR is far, far more than just incrementally more neat than the Nintendo Boy. Not only are the gaming experiences often mind-blowing, VR fitness has legitimately changed my life and will result in me living longer with a higher quality of life. VR has expanded the experiences I am capable of having! AR isn't my jam personally, and I'm certainly not rich enough to buy into the apple ecosystem haha but even then I can think of good uses for a lighter form of AR in the future.

Funfact: the luddites smashed textile production equipment because factory working conditions were so intolerable. @9:15 I remember when my family got our SNES, which we paid for using the insurance money from our NES being stolen. When we got our Gamecube, I was overjoyed at how much better it looked than our 64. (When we got our N64, it was... well, at least it was better than the playstation0... or the "FX Chip" games on the SNES, a la StarFox). I remember going from the GameBoy Spinach to the Gameboy Advance, (I skipped the GBColour), and that was astounding... it was like an entire Super Nintendo in my pocket! (The GBA Micro was definitely my fav model). The nintendo Wii felt like... it was *just* a Gamecube with motion controls and a less cool Zapper light gun gimmick. Nostalgia just ain't what it used to be.
