personally, when looking at sorting boardwipes, i first sort between creature wipes, noncreature wipes, and both. from there, i use the terms "Specific" and "Nonspecific" a lot. eg; "Destroy all non-Dragon creatures" is specific creature, "Destroy all creatures" is nonspecific creature. "Destroy all artifacts" is specific noncreature, "Destroy all nonland permanents" is nonspecific both.

Another thing to curb certain boardwipes feeling like auto-includes, is putting in only BWs that play to a deck's theme. So, Fumigate & Arcbond in my life gain/drain deck. Martial Coup in my token multiplier deck. Tragic Slip's my all-time fav though. The art, the lore text, the concept. so good.

"Graveyard decks kind of scoff at board wipes" I used to run Nuclear Karador. Fourteen board wipes and a deck full of recursion. The deck's M.O. was to clear everything and rebuild faster than the opponents. The last game I ever played with it was, with the intention of getting someone in my group off of a very not-fun Nekusar deck in adherence with Rule 0, three hours long. I played Armageddon. Three times. I didn't play that deck after that, and I haven't played against a single Nekusar deck since. It was incredibly oppressive and un-fun, and I'm fortunately now in a place where I can play with people that I actually enjoy. Nuclear Karador is still something we occasionally joke about, but it's not together any more, and hopefully, I'll never /have/ to re-build it. But if someone decides that nobody's allowed to have fun, well. I know what to do.

Conditional/Unconditional and Symmetrical/Asymmetrical are a good start, but a category (which does somewhat overlap but should be its own) is resistant/non-resistant. Right now there’s a number of ways to get around most board wipes: Destroy - Indestructible and regeneration (it’s not used often, but still a thing) Damage - see Destroy; damage prevention Sacrifice - Angel of Jubilation or Assault Suit -1/-1 - anything that can temporarily boost toughness Currently, nothing resists exile, bounce, or being tucked. When you combine the non-resistant, unconditional, and often asymmetrical nature, bounce is extremely powerful. It is something that I think WotC needs to address using future mechanics.

I haven't completely finished the video so sorry in advance if you talked about this but the topic seems to be moving away from nev's disk so I wanted to point out that if you somehow give nev's disk indestructible, you can use it every turn since unlike other artifact board wipes, you dont need to sacrifice it to use it. which was the main idea in my first ever commander deck avacyn. yes it was a rude deck
@chrismarlow95853 жыл бұрын
Great topic! I'm glad you covered the use of "slowing down opponents" with an early board wipe. Definitely an underrated use. My favourite for that is hour of revelation... a brutal 3CMC mono-white board wipe for all nonland permanents you can slam as soon as the board has 10 permanents. I wish when talking about how the colours use board wipes you could've mentioned white using them on top of board protection spells/effects to turn any "destroy all" into a one-sided effect. That, plus white's flexibility in board wipes for various scenarios or hitting any permanent you like makes it the best at board wipes I think... one of the few things it does best in commander! Sadly though the best two are both in blue: cyclonic rift and ixodron (both get around practically all forms of protection).
@stephenhurley10333 жыл бұрын
Im the guy with all the game changing enchantments (group hug but actrully out to win in a political way). My 2 board wipes in that deck are decent of dragons (down side is it targets but also an upside due to its drawback of making a 4/4 for each of your mates creatures). Its amazing how I can offer my friend a vague explination about how theycan take out our mutual opponent and not understanding the offer I blow up their board and they cant attack me because of my many enchantments. The other is single combat which I think players undervalue. As a deck who has 15 creatures and wants more enchantments playing it is usually better then letting people go crazy, I choose my best creature to stay and this isnt destroying my opponents stuff, its sacrifice! Lastly the draw back for boardwipes is normally playing your stuff last but until my next turn players cant cast planeswalkers or creatures... My meta has few planeswalkers so I read it like its just creatures usually, it would be relivent in other metas I am sure. Both really suit that deck ☺️

Josh - I don't think Chain of Vapor will work as you think it does in Orvar. When you sac a land to copy the spell, you are not casting the copy, so Orvar will not trigger again as its token-copy-making ability is a cast trigger.
@M3phobic3 жыл бұрын
I think he knows that. Pretty sure he is just running it because it is a 1 drop that targets any permanent, you can sac lands to save multiple things on your board from a board wipe if needed and it can be used on the opponents cards if needed. Just a really versatile 1 drop that Orvar can run

The comment they made about some decks just plowing right through a board wipe reminded me of this game I played against a tasigur deck with my windgrace deck. This guys deck was designed to wipe the board over and over and over again until he found a win con. After one wipe, I managed to cast praetors council and get my whole graveyard back. And then I deployed enough to make him pop his next board wipe right away. And the same the next turn. And then a third time before I finally ran out of gas again. And the other 3 people in this FIVE PLAYER GAME were doing jack shit just waiting to see what would happen and not committing anything to the board or stopping the tasigur deck. @chrismarlow95853 жыл бұрын
I think as they were talking through their outline in the video they realised they didn't do a great job of categorising them. Creature - noncreature - all General use - benefits from synergy ^ Splitting them under those 6 categories (one of the three, then one of the two) basically splits them all pretty nicely. You can split "saves commander" out from the synergy section if you want. Once split like that it's easy to first look through the synergy bits and see if there are any which suit your deck well. Once picking out any that do, you fill any gaps in what you want from board wipes with the top general use ones. You can easily put into practice what they say about using general use board wipes which hurt you less simply by your deck construction (lacking a certain card type, yes/no graveyard stuff).

Conditional - There is a condition to the effect BEYOND card type OR a limitation to the effect. (destroy all BLUE creatures, bury nontoken creatures, destroy everything CMC 4 or less. I feel like a 2x2 categorization was perhaps insufficient. I think a 3x3 categorization with "cost-conditional" (for cards which require additional resource cost to be paid for activation after casting, but not don't otherwise require other cards or effects to act as setup) and "varaiable symmetry" (for both cards that have either look at features beyond simply card type [power, CMC, etc] and any cards that may have effects that would be changed from symmetrical to asymmetrical or vice-versa just via an additional cost or condition on the card itself) would resolve the issues. Wrath of God: Unconditional Symmetrical Pernicious Deed: Cost-conditional (requires extra input after casting) varaiable symmetry (cares about CMC) Dictate of Erebos: Conditional Asymmetric

I tried my hand at the idea, but I admot not not being that great of a deckbuilder and would like to see the man who gave me the idea have a take on it..

it may not get rid of everything on the board, but if correctly played it is fantastic.

I’m rewatching this to brush up on board wipe knowledge, and I feel like WotC saw this video and went “Oh, White doesn’t have the best board wipes? Well, here’s a White Blasphemous Act and a mass sacrifice card in back to back sets.”

This was great, thank you. Please do a follow up with single target removal. It would be extremely educational for me. I'm still somewhat new to the format and I am slowly amassing my toolbox.

blue is definitely the best, because: you only need one cyc rift and the tutors... oh, and them you have recursing effects... so you can do it all the time only my oppinion ;) love blue

in Casual EDH, White is maybe the strongest color... my playgroup dont play with infite combo, so a board wipe is often the solution. Also we have multiple deck so we dont have (read want) 1 Cyclonic rift in each blue deck.

No way. Definitely need to run more Board Wipes.

I'm kinda glad you guys didn't mention Winds of Abandon, cause I really don't want it to go up in price...but it is honestly the best creature based board wipe in the game. 6 Mana unconditional asymmetrical exile all creatures for (4)(w)(w)....yes please!

I play an attack-centered deck. It runs Ondu Inversion and Aligned Hedron Network. Not amazing in isolation, but it works fair with the deck.

Board wipes have kinda left my local meta. They aren't often good enough for our competitive pods and they aren't really fun in the really low power stuff, so they really have become rare (outside of like the obvious cyclonic rift or toxic deluge in a cEDH deck or whatever). People usually say that board wipes are a necessity for preventing clogged up boardstates, but our low power stuff is typically pretty stompy and proactive about punching through with evasion etc so it's never a problem ─ sweepers just kinda drag the game out (ironically) compared to more pinpoint interaction. I honestly think the slugfests are more fun at lower power levels anyway.

I have a weird philosophy where I never really play cards like Vandalblast anymore. Mostly because it can feel like a pseudo Armageddon against non-green decks. I'd say to play Shattering Spree or Austere Command instead where you have options and you don't have to destroy all artifacts if it will hose someone's mana.

Hey, I'm looking for advice. How many board wipes would you run in a deck that uses a board wipe as a potential win condition? I'm building Linvala, Shield of Sea Gate and the plan is to gather a powerful party, make it indestructible and then wipe the board. Bonus question: How many cards would you run that give indestructible to your creatures?
@roercula84253 жыл бұрын
Thats not really a win condition the way you want to use its more of a strategie enhancer. I would try 6 board wipes if you really want to Fokus on them plus 5 protection Spells.
@pauliebleeker54423 жыл бұрын
@@roercula8425 Thanks for the answer. 6 and 5 sounds good. I know that it's not really a win condition, but I wanted to make sure that everyone understands that this is the route I want to go. It's a more or less janky deck, but a lot of fun. In our playgroup we love to build decks around certain themes and with certain stipulations. My Linvala deck is meant to be a d&d deck (for example I'm running all the lvl up creatures) and I'm not allowed to win if I haven't gathered a full party. Really lookin forward to the d&d set :D

My penny's-worth. Nev's is unconditional, because it doesn't look for anything about the cards other than type (so if it's conditional, then so is Wrath of God), and it has a fixed mana cost. Pernicious Deed is conditional because the mana cost isn't fixed, and only hits things with a CMC equal to or less than the mana you pump into it.
