The image of the Ascent of Alexander the Great has been nearly forgotten, yet it was once a very popular celebration of human capacity while also being a warning of its limits.

Happy New Year, too. The ascent (apotheosis?) of Alexander reflects our yearning for majesty (the desire for excellence: the best of our capacity to order our talents and that of others to the highest good) without the mishap and tumble of Icarus (flying too high for one's own good: hubris). The legend embodies the ideal of kingship & good governance. Alexander shows up in the Medieval literary cycle of the Matter of Rome, maybe a future topic Jonathan?

It is the middle/passive action "go up" corresponding with the anabibasis which is the active to "put up". «Ανέβασα τις φωτογραφίες από τον υπολογιστή» is modern Greek for "I uploaded the photographs from the computer"; ancient Greek· «ἀνεβίβασα τὰς φωτογραφίας ἀπὸ τοῦ ὑπολογιστοῦ» Greek verbs are very versatile and a majority of them also have a common metaphorical meaning. @@MikhalisBramouell Mr. Jesus Christ sir, my biblical greek is a bit nonexistent. Your word sent me on a wild chase of hyperlinks about the 10,000 and their route, so i haphazardly made a reference about the 4500 hundred American troops in Iraq possibly leaving similarly. Not that i didn't enjoy trying to extract out the basic structure of the entire language. As for "water-walker", i assumed this was a God-tier miracle of Jewish origin, or earlier origin, and i _did_ manage to trace it back to a Canaanite God, possibly Asherah, circa 1200 B.C. or such. If the language is as you describe, i could see how apostles like Paul might have adapted their messaging. That specific idea might be a Jewish inspired Greek concept rather than a translation. As for Sky-walker, please, kill me now. I mean, i knew _Luke_ was rewritten gentile nonsense, but wow.

"And it happened, after that Alexander son of Philip, the Macedonian, who came out of the land of Chettiim, had smitten Darius king of the Persians and Medes, that he reigned in his stead, the first over Greece, And made many wars, and won many strong holds, and slew the kings of the earth, And went through to the ends of the earth, and took spoils of many nations, insomuch that the earth was quiet before him; whereupon he was exalted and his heart was lifted up. And he gathered a mighty strong host and ruled over countries, and nations, and kings, who became tributaries unto him. And after these things he fell sick...So Alexander reigned twelve years, and then died. And his servants bare rule every one in his place. And after his death they all put crowns upon themselves; so did their sons after them many years: and evils were multiplied in the earth." (I Maccabees 1,1-9) "After this one I looked, and behold another wild beast as a leopard, and it had four wings of a bird upon it: and the wild beast had four heads, and power was given to it." (Daniel 7,6) "...a third kingdom which is the brass, which shall have dominion over all the earth;" (Daniel 2,39) "For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth." Awesome. I'm very interested in Alexander simply because my family have taken his name (probably in 10th century Scotland). Also, the warning about hubris really resonated with me - I had a significant dream recently where I decided to take "the low road" rather than the high and have been pondering what this means.

The Bactrians, the Persians, and the Indians defeated his "successors". The Afghans defeated him directly. His broken army was driven out after 2 and a half years of desultory warfare there. I noticed that the Alexanders influence even goes beyond his name, Greek cultural influence on the far East in particular. I'm an Icon writer too and theme for my Bachelors degree was about similarities of Buddhist and Christian art. Buddha was first anthropomorphised by Greeks in modern Afghanistan. Indo Greeks through Buddhism influenced the Chinese who influenced the Japanese, Japanese burials are very similar to the way modern Orthodox Greeks bury their dead. Chivalry of the Greeks most likely indirectly influenced the Bushido. And countless other examples.

"...Students of popular science, like Mr. Blatchford, are always insisting that Christianity and Buddhism are very much alike, especially Buddhism. This is generally believed, and I believed it myself until I read a book giving the reasons for it. The reasons were of two kinds: resemblances that meant nothing because they were common to all humanity, and resemblances which were not resemblances at all. *The author solemnly explained that the two creeds were alike in things in which all creeds are alike, or else he described them as alike in some point in which they are quite obviously different.* Thus, as a case of the first class, he said that both Christ and Buddha were called by the divine voice coming out of the sky, as if you would expect the divine voice to come out of the coal-cellar. Or, again,it was gravely urged that these two Eastern teachers, by a singular coincidence, both had to do with the washing of feet. You might as well say that it was a remarkable coincidence that they both had feet to wash. And the other class of similarities were those which simply were not similar. Thus this reconciler of the two religions draws earnest attention to the fact that at certain religious feasts the robe of the Lama is rent in pieces out of respect, and the remnants highly valued. But this is the reverse of a resemblance, for the garments of Christ were not rent in pieces out of respect, but out of derision; and the remnants were not highly valued except for what they would fetch in the rag shops. It is rather like alluding to the obvious connection between the two ceremonies of the sword: when it taps a man's shoulder, and when it cuts off his head. It is not at all similar for the man. These scraps of puerile pedantry would indeed matter little if it were not also true that the alleged philosophical resemblances are also of these two kinds, either proving too much or not proving anything. That Buddhism approves of mercy or of self-restraint is not to say that it is specially like Christianity; it is only to say that it is not utterly unlike all human existence. Buddhists disapprove in theory of cruelty or excess because all sane human beings disapprove in theory of cruelty or excess. But to say that Buddhism and Christianity give the same philosophy of these things is simply false. All humanity does agree that we are in a net of sin. Most of humanity agrees that there is some way out. But as to what is the way out, I do not think that there are two institutions in the universe which contradict each other so flatly as Buddhism and Christianity. Even when I thought, with most other well-informed, though unscholarly, people, that Buddhism and Christianity were alike, there was one thing about them that always perplexed me; *I mean the startling difference in their type of religious art.* I do not mean in its technical style of representation, but in the things that it was manifestly meant to represent. No two ideals could be more opposite than a Christian saint in a Gothic cathedral and a Buddhist saint in a Chinese temple. The opposition exists at every point; but perhaps the shortest statement of it is that the Buddhist saint always has his eyes shut, while the Christian saint always has them very wide open. The Buddhist saint has a sleek and harmonious body, but his eyes are heavy and sealed with sleep. The mediaeval saint's body is wasted to its crazy bones, but his eyes are frightfully alive. There cannot be any real community of spirit between forces that produced symbols so different as that. Granted that both images are extravagances, are perversions of the pure creed, it must be a real divergence which could produce such opposite extravagances. The Buddhist is looking with a peculiar intentness inwards. The Christian is staring with a frantic intentness outwards. If we follow that clue steadily we shall find some interesting things." - G.K. Chesterton

Blessings for the coming year, Jonathan! I'm delighted to see you diving into lore on Alexander the Great. The aftermath of his death has had immense influence on the Bible, the book of Daniel for instance. The symbolism of the second half of the book of Daniel is very intruiging, and may be a vaticana ex eventu apocalyptic prophecy, meaning the writer describes the circumstances he's in and/or the way history developed to the point of his circumstance. The text can be dated around 160 BC, which means the book describes the fall of Alexander and the following rulers of Seleucid and Ptolemaïc descent, with Antiochus IV Epiphanes as the antagonist figure, with a mouth that spoke boastfully. The symbolism in Revelation seems to have connections with the descriptions found in the book of Daniel. I'm guessing you're planning to delve into myths and legends about Alexander the Great, and not so much biblical stories, so I thought I'd mention the book of Daniel just to bring it to your mind. As a protestant theological student in the Netherlands, I am intruiged by your way of looking at the world and I hope to continue following your work. Have a nice day!

Very interesting! I wonder if the image can be connected to the act of "taming the passions of the flesh." He holds bait on the ends of the sticks, which seems to help him be able to control these Griffins. In mastering his earthly desires, he can properly direct them upward toward heavenly principalities. Perhaps a flip where they can be used to glorify God.

High Christology is in the earliest documents in the NT, like Paul's letters, and was not a later development, nevermind the ancient text in the OT already indicating it and fulfilled in Christ. I point this out since many critics try to use such parallels to claim such developments in the NT and borrowing from legends, etc when in fact the opposite may be true as Alexander met the Levitical priests and had a premonition of the encounter in a dream and would likely have learned of their 'mysteries' as he himself was an initiate into the 'mystery religions' which is basically that a world savior would rule the world as universally known before the flood as prophets like Enoch were already preaching about the end and who himself was 'taken up' similar to Elijah much later, not to mention the 'gospel in the stars' (zodiac) also universally known in all tongues, also fulfilled with the star of Bethlehem event we can now verify with astronomical software when the correct dates are plugged in. The dual griffins in the image + the Cherubim/Griffin relationship + my tendency to notice the numbers 222 and 444 with alarming frequency + my two names is something I'm trying to understand. Thank you for this video. Just a thought, that in a version of the legend of St.George I have read the dragon is captured and a belt put around the neck, then brought back to the village to be an assistant to the people. This looks similar to the image of the chained griffons whom Alexander has under control and do his bidding. I imagine the monsters are the passions being put under control and following the will of the master. I’d be interested to see more of how this contrasts with Julian’s attempt at ascension, is it his going into heresy or trying to reach a utopia on earth that’s his downfall? Or maybe both. In one, like you said, Alexander is lifted up to unity and in the other a unity is of the man’s design.

(Along with Napoleon Bonaparte and perhaps even Adolph Hitler in their respective ascent prior to abject defeat) Those pyramids.. It seems to me that the story of Daedalus, and Icarus flying too close to the sun would connect better to the viewer in an artistic piece due to more familiarity amongst the general populace than that of Alexander and still portray the same esoteric message that you find in Alexander's mythos, but we create what we envision. I was curious about that design myself and in investigating it, I found basically what you laid out here. So good job on the artwork. That said, it definitely doesn't land the same way to me as inspiring, it seems overwhelmingly man-venerating and puts the material earth at the center and God above and around rather than God being a centralized goal. It just seems a bit Deist in that way. I appreciate this video, because it basically convinced me which coffee mug I should get! The days of creation it is.

I've got something for you to tackle that may be a little too much for you. Alexander, Julius Caesar, Captain Ahab (Moby Dick), Judge Holden (Blood Meridian), Luke Skywalker and countless other protagonist/antagonists of literature/myth/history, and even Jesus himself are all the same type of character; it's the character of the Morning Star, Lucifer. They represent the "Courage of Lucifer" to go against the Absolute with no chance of winning their cause. That Absolute can be God or, most often what is the allegorical representation of God, a Leviathan government and/or culture. They do it out of this rebellious principle that transcends all ages and epochs. Therefore, my question is this: what is the symbolism of Lucifer, the Morning Star?

The thieves in "Ali Baba and the 40 thieves" are most probably descendants of the European soldiers of Alexander the Great's army who remained there after his conquests. I believe they were Illyrian, Macedonian and other tribes. There are many symbols in the tail to speak of Arian identity of the thieves and maybe Ali himself: the mountain and the cave, the desire for gold, piracy (robbery), the cross they put on the doors (most probably a sun symbol/swastika), and many more.

I noticed a while ago that the name of Alexander’s mighty Thessalonian steed (Bucephalus) is strikingly similar to a combination of the titles that Jesus referred to James & John (Sons of Zebedee) with (Sons of Thunder (Boanerges) and mixed with Peter’s given nickname (Cephas The Rock) Just doing some research and I keep finding myself in the same place as if The Lord is leading me to clues on some epic scriptural adventure/mystery and so maybe some one in the comments has some insight into that as well and could add some more info. Reading the Epistle of James I am convinced that it has a plethora of motifs that are inherently based on a specific motif that can be traced back to Alexander The Great and I’m curious if you think that was a style of writing that happened to be prevalent at the time, or if maybe it was being written with a specific population of people intended to receive it. (Maybe Spain/Portugal?)

Alexander's cult could be related to Orpheus. Orpheus went to the Underworld to save his wife, but looked back, so his wife fell back in. According to the legends, Orpheus saw a lot in Hades, and after he came back, he taught people, how to find the Paradise (Elysium). Most likely this was also the purpose of the Eleusinian mysteries. Christ's harrowing of hell is also interesting here, especially the gospel of Nicodemus.

im low key offended that you consider Julian the apostate to have represented a "fake" paganism. He was a supporter of the great neo platonic philosophers and their pagan theology. I know that you are christian but i think some pagans deserve great respect and a fair look at their kind of spirituality, which actually lended so much to christianity.

I would like to hear you discuss how the legends and iconography of Alexander may relate to his unparalleled military conquests, which were what earned him the title "the Great." In the course of 12 years, from his base in Macedonia, Alexander conquered all of Greece, most of Anatolia, Egypt, the Levant, the Persian Empire, and northern India. Were the legends of his ascension in the chariot put forth to help explain his military prowess? To explain his successes by giving him the ability to see from above what his enemies were up to? Height has significance in war because of its practical advantages in battle. Armies always seek to take and hold the high ground, where they often build battlements to control the surround terrain. And further, with at the advent of balloons and aircraft, they were first thought of and utilized as platforms to reconnoiter the enemy on the ground.

In islamic scripture, Alexander goes to the far east where he found a nation too close to the sun, when he came back he stopped Yog and Magog by building a massive wall near the Caspian sea. When he went to the far West he found the Sun sitting on a river to be transported back to the East underground and people there were naked savages like native Americans, Allah gives Alexander the choice to kill them or to spare them, and Alexander chose to spare them.
