The square formation of generals in shogun 2 is actually an ability called stand and fight which gives your troops an insane amount of buffs that its almost broken

I always found the fall of the samurai infantry to be at a disadvantage when attacking castles compared to regular shogun 2 units. Since they aren't built for melee and they fire on a pretty flat trajectory they just can't get very high kills. The artillery is useful but a multi tiered castle pretty much negates that advantage.

the attackers get more men by default, but honestly, there is a cheese method in shogun involving bows that makes the attackers always win so I can see why they did this.

Honestly a poor job on the defenders side. everyone who played shogun 2 a little bit knows that the inner part of the castle makes the defenders unbreakable. and then to have 0 units inside that strongest part of the castle, is just giving up on one of your biggest strengths.
