Neil's points are completely refuted by basic observation. The USSR was not an economic failure - it went from being an agricultural society to a competitor in the space race with the US. It had the fastest economic growth of any country in the history of the world, until it was beaten by... China.

I am a former member of The French Communist Party and remain Ethically a Communist and thus indebted to Kant rather than Hegel, and also subscribe to Karl Popper whose 'Open Society' is systematically related to the same Authors 'Conjectures and Refutations' and Popper considered himself ethically on the the left because Science is Ethically Dialectical Materialism. Christianity and Communism and Liberalism and even Conservatism as distinct from reaction are Universal and Individualist. Republican's idea of Woke is civilisation. I think Peel did his best to ameliorate the Potato Feminine and divided the Tory Party as did Catholic Emancipation. From Communism to Marxism are not binary, they are a spectrum. It would help if these two watched the Wondrium Great Courses course which compares Communism and Capitalism with Professor Stewart [a Texan]

The Soviet Union was a significant improvement from the Russian empire in terms of living standards and innovations. Same with the PRC. There's no such thing as utopia obviously, these nations were far from perfect. But they were already very poor areas when the communists took power, and in both cases they rose to became economic and geopolitical rivals to the current global hegemon under communist leadership.
