I'm all for doing the videos showcasing your "procrastination projects" lol! Mostly because I do it, too. Between working and writing and finishing school, I love to craft and I enjoy doing videos on those random pieces. My only issue is making sure I have time for all of it! Phew. Still getting the hang of that part.

I'm so glad you're excited about reaching 60k! I get that way when I reach 50k (product of doing NaNos, I believe), but everything after feels almost unreal but I get excited every 5k or so. As far as writing craft, I don't tend to use any until I've written the first draft because I want to get the story out and then order it. I can't think of any callbacks right now, bu goodness do I feel you when I just can't get that one line to go right and it messes with the whole scene. So frustrating, but when you finally figure it out it feels like every god imaginable has smiled upon you, lol. In the meantime, I stick in some brackets, what I want the line to feel like or what I need it to bridge and then keep on trucking. And my recent procrastination-yet-still-productive hobbies are crocheting and, like you, embroidering.

I am writing a zombie apocalypse novel that I can't seem to get outlined for nothing I am thinking about just saying screw it and just go for it and then reread and outline than this will be the first novel I have pantsed since I was in my early twenty everything I have written has always had some kind of outline so this will be interesting I am using Save the Cat in the back of my mind while writing this novel but not actually outlining if that makes any sense I am a little over 20,000 words into it and so far I have yet to hit a wall without an outline so maybe I can do it although now that I have said it more likely than not I am probably going to run into a problem soon dang it Wish me luck I am going to need it

I haven't gotten around to circling back yet, but my opening scene alludes to an arrest that isn't revisited until about halfway through. I'm stuck in the meantime, not without progress, but drawing it out more than I planned.

I used to read them before outlining, or after outlining a bit and also using Save the Cat. But then I would write it and if I got stuck I'd look up my issue and read any writing craft book related to my problem. Take a weekend to read it (or less) and using those tips I'd fix it. However, this process left me in a bubble of my own brain and I forgot that writing was a form of communication, so everything I wrote was dull or unclear because I wrote it thinking about structure, but not readability. So now I ditched the books and now I read or watch stuff I like, if there's a scene that gives me emotion I copy it and deconstruct it, then try writing like they did. It helps me figure out rhythm and how to make stuff exciting and fun. I also keep note of what I didn't like and why and try to avoid that in my writing. Its all quite hard but its a learning process.

Congrats on getting to 60k! So I use craft books during my different stages accept for drafting. I'll use 'Save the Cat' for my outline then jump to editing books for when I need to clean stuff up. My favorite call back from my current series is... ugh it's so good. My main character is from a country who has been colonizing other countries int he world. But he has made friends with a forgiener who's country is the first one to stand up and defeat the colonizing country. The first time they talk they agree 'we should be friends, for he betterment of our countries'. and this is a constant thread I bring back up when they bond. That with them there is hope that their people can heal and learn. Sadly some stuff is about to happen to the forgiener so I'm going to hope they get another moment or I'm going to cry so hard.

I haven't figured out when in the writing process to use writing craft books. I enjoy reading them and gleaning all kinds of helpful information for them, but have yet to make that leap of using them during the process. So any hints on that would be helpful. The puzzle looks fantastic on your wall! Makes me want to put together my one and only puzzle, glue it together and put it above my writing desk.

My favorite call back is each of my POV characters saying they feel like they’re slipping and need something to hold onto so at the ending they feel like they’re holding onto each other!

I like using outline structures after my zero draft is done and I am getting ready to revise. But that's probably because I write scenes out of order during the zero draft.

Loved this! I’m actually working on my childrens middle grade manuscript which I’m nearing the end of which I’ve never completed a large project so it’s kinda surreal. I’ve got one last chapter to complete and then I’ve done with writing it. Obviously, not with the editing of it but I’ll focus on that later 😅

Dialogue is extremely tricky I found, especially when I first started writing, but a trick that I’ve used is studying the dialogue from movies. Ironically, writing it from that sort of standpoint, where the rule is to always keep a sort of tension hidden between the lines, seemed to help a lot.

I generally use save the cat from the beginning, but I actually pantsed a novel for this year's NaNoWriMo. I used the Save the Cat beat sheet to push the story forward. I had no idea where the story was going, I just focused on working my way to the next beat I needed to hit. It actually worked out really really well. I have a lot of detail and subplots to add, but I was able to have a pretty clean first draft with a fairly cohesive story without doing any pre-planning at all. I'm actually amazed it worked as well as it did lol. I never got stuck anywhere because I always knew where the story was headed.
