Summary: After the encounter with the shark at Sea World, Sean Brody has returned to Amity. Here he has assumed his father's role, working for the police department, and is engaged to a young woman named Tiffany. His mother, Ellen, still lives in Amity as well. Mike Brody is now married to Carla and is researching conch snails with his partner, Jake, in the Bahamas. One night, while repairing a buoy in Amity harbor from the police boat, Sean is ambushed from below and killed by the Brodys' old enemy - a Great White Shark. After the funeral Ellen wants Mike to stay off the water, but he refuses and takes Ellen back to the Caribbean with him and his wife & daughter, Thea. Ellen starts trying to enjoy life again, meeting charming pilot Hoagie after having been a widow for some time. Mike & Jake encounter the Great White Shark on the water, and tag & track it for research. But the shark soon starts causing havoc, and comes after Thea on a banana boat ride! Now, Ellen, Mike, Jake & Hoagie will face the shark on his terms. Who will survive?

I loved Roger Ebert’s review. Quoting from memory: “The shark is out for revenge on the Brody family, who killed it in the last three films. This makes sense to me; if somebody kept killing me, I’d be out for revenge too.”

Some unknown tidbits about "Jaws: The Revenge." 1) This film was one of four "paycheck" films that Michael Caine has admitted to in his career. This film paid for his new house, but he has never said on what he used the money from "The Hand," "The Swarm" and "The Island." 2) The paycheck that got Michael Caine to sign on was the one that Roy Scheider (not Schneider) turned down, down to the last penny. 3) The original script was for a Great White shark to become possessed by an alien, but that went nowhere after the first page. Then, in a bid to entice Scheider back to the movie, the script was centered around a murderous voodoo priest who gets out of prison after a long stretch, vowing revenge on the police officer who put him there -- namely, then-Det. Sgt. Brody. Supposedly, the priest's constant threats of revenge, along with the reach of his followers, prompted Brody to take the job as chief of Amity to get some breathing room. Alas, the priest finds out Brody is dead but, still wanting revenge, puts a curse on the chief's family. Director Joseph Sargent was desperate for something new to be done with the shark and gradually warmed to the idea of using magic. Scheider supposedly said he would sign on for such a film...if they removed the shark from it. The producers probably should have listened. But, they didn't and Scheider blew them off. 4) The Bahamas was chosen for primary filming because Lorraine Gary allegedly did not want to endure a New England winter for any real length of time. Despite having been born in Forest Hills, New York, she had moved to Los Angeles at age 11 and went to Beverly Hills High School. Though she did return to New York to attend Columbia University (turning down an offer from the prestigious Pasadena Playhouse), she makes her home in the warm climes of Los Angeles and Corpus Christi, Texas. 5) In the novelization of the movie, it is Michael that is cursed by a voodoo priest for preventing the priest from using a child as a human sacrifice. This led to a lawsuit by local authorities who reminded the studio that Voodoo is not associated with the Bahamas (the closest site is Haiti). The publishers were also sued by Voodoo priests for defamation for implying that children were used as human sacrifices when, in reality, animals such as chickens and goats are slaughtered. 6) Producers were unable to use Martha's Vineyard to stand in for Amity as delays pushed the start of filming to Feb. 2, 1987, by which time the island was a typical winter wonderland. Because of this and the fact that the mechanical shark would not work in frigid water, Martha's Vineyard was used for only a few shots, namely local members of the high school band caroling and drowning out Sean's cries for help, the beach scene with Michael and the ferry. The rest of the island scenes were done on sound stages. After a week of filming on Martha's Vineyard, production moved to Nassau. 7) The original final script made no mention of Martin Brody, save for a line where Ellen says "...your father, may he rest in peace." Lorraine Gary, however, felt that Scheider needed to have some connection to the film and so, a production still taken way back in 1975 was blown up, framed and hung on the wall of the Amity PD office. Gary also ad-libbed the connection between Martin's death and the shark. As Gary was married to Universal's chief executive Sid Sheinberg, not even director Joseph Sargent interfered. 8) Typical filming of a JAWS movie was two years. The fourth installment took a mere nine months. 9) Lorraine Gary came out of retirement to do the movie (her previous film being "1941" eight years earlier) strictly because she wanted to have an on-screen romance with Michael Caine, who was one of her favorite actors. During their first scene together, Gary admitted to being as giddy as a school girl. 10) Director Joseph Sargent attempted to put together a brief filming segment during the summer of 1986 in order to get Gary a scene or two with Murray Hamilton, who played Mayor Larry Vaughn in the first two JAWS movies. However, Hamilton was in the final stages of lung cancer and could barely talk, much less stand for Sean's funeral. Sargent and Lorraine Gary both agreed that it would have been a grave disservice to Hamilton to film him in his condition. When official filming did start, Cyprian R. Dube, who played Selectman Posner in the first two JAWS films, was upgraded to mayor.

Roy Scheider only did "Jaws 2" because of contractual obligations. He was supposed to play the part of Michael in "The Deer Hunter" that Robert DeNiro ultimately got, which likely didn't improve his attitude toward Jaws 2. He was a pretty ornery fellow under the nest of circumstances, or so I've read. Jaws 2 was a complete mess for a number of reasons, but one big one was the amount of screen time given to Ellen Brody becoming a "mover & shaker" on Amity Island, which not one viewer could have cared less about, but being the producer's wife has a number of advantages, one being her getting a meatier role.

And then LJN made a NES game based on this film, but branded it as though it were based on the original. And they probably got the idea for the roar from the "roar" the shark made after being blown up in the first film. Spielberg added the sound clip because the truck from "Dual" (or was it "Duel"?) roared when it plunged off a cliff and he thought Jaws was like...a spiritual successor.
@TheRealNormanBates
@TheRealNormanBates 3 жыл бұрын
It’s King Kong’s roar from the original 1933 film. In *Duel,* I think Spielberg added it (underneath the normal wreckage sounds) to emphasize/allude to the truck as a monster (as opposed to the unseen driver). I do believe he was giving a nod to *Duel* in *Jaws,* simply because that’s one of the main reasons he got the director’s job. It helped that he slowed and muffled the King Kong roar so it sounded more like a whale (or something dying underwater).
@Bluesit32
@Bluesit32 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheRealNormanBates Pretty sure it was a dinosaur from King Kong. I have Jaws DVD which includes the documentaries. In his own words, he put the roar in Jaws because he was young and stupid. "Jaws has four letters, Duel has four letter..." Though he also did it because Duel got his foot in the door, so to speak. It was a thank you of sorts.

the novelization of this movie is the origin of the phrase 'Voodoo Shark'. You see, the book explains that the reason that a great white shark is attacking the Brodys this time is because while down in the Caribbean Michael prevented a voodoo priest from abducting a child to use as a sacrifice or something, so the voodoo guy using black magic to summon his spirit animal (guess what?) in revenge. This explains why the great white shark follows Ellen all the way from Cape Cod to the Bahamas. Mind you, this summoning not only introduces MAGIC into the previous fairly realistic JAWS mythos, it also takes place AFTER Sean has already been eaten, so... Thus, 'Voodoo Shark': explaining a stupid thing with an even more outlandish/stupid rational.

I'm surprised that Spielberg has never gone back a digitally fixed Jaws, adding a shark where he initially envisioned one to be. After replacing guns with walkie talkies in E. T. it is not so farfetched that he would tinker with another one of his films. One of the best aspects of the film is how little we actually see of the shark. It looks rather rubbery we finally do see it. Hope he leaves the film alone.

It's actually quite a dull film, both in content and presentation. One of its many, many problems is a lack of focus. I have no idea what they thought they were making this film for (apart from paying for Michael Caine's beach house).

1) for people ranting about the shark "roaring": in Jaws 1 the shark roared after he killed Quint, while Orca was sinking and before he ended up getting that gas tank in his mouth, in Jaws 2 Mike Brody is laying in the water unconscious, the shark is speeding towards him, the teenagers barely manage to get him back to safety inside the boat and the shark roars while barely missing Mike Brody and speeding past the boat, in Jaws 3, if you listen very carefully, every time the gigantic mother shark appears from the murky water and shows off its' jaws, you can still hear some sort of subtle roar, 2) for people ranting about the shark looking fake: THEY ALL LOOK FAKE, the original one is far too dark, the 2nd one is borderline Phantom of the Opera, the 3rd one is pretty much a juvenile Megalodon and finally 3) for people ranting about the shark travelling all the way to the Bahamas from Amity New York ... the Bahamas are less than 2,000km away from Amity Island ... I heard that in some cases Great Whites can swim up to 500 km a day ... that's only 4 days, ... Jake argues with Mike Brody for being behind schedule on their research and complains it's Xmass' Eve and they have to do overtime ... the shark doesn't appear until the day of New Years Eve (since they're at the casino celebrating Newyear and it happened the day before) ... even if we seriously lowball everything by saying the time gap between Sean being killed and them returning back to the Bahamas only takes 1 day as a whole, which is pretty much impossible since they also attended Sean's funeral during that time (things like that take time to organize), this means the shark had a time frame of at least from Christmass Eve all the way to New Years Eve give or take to make the cross from Amity to the Bahamas, which is at least a week ... a Great White could've easily made that cross in half that amount of time ... I know it's a movie so we shouldn't needlessly overcomplicate things, but even if you wish to do so, it's far from impossible or even improbable ...

I have quite a soft spot for the Jaws franchise. I actually think 2 is the worst one. The chase through the sunken ship is one of my favorite sequences in the whole series it's a shame they couldn't have made use of a better shark model like the one from the previous film.

It would have been more entertaining if the Jamaican character launched a bale of Marijuana into the shark's mouth to "get him to mellow out."

I went to the theater to see the first, third and fourth Jaws movies. (Saw the second one on HBO.) The Revenge was the stupidest one of the series, which is why it was the last of the series. (Why would a shark roar like a Hollywood dinosaur?)

Caine and his co-star have no chemistry whatsoever. The rest of the cast just seem happy to be getting a check and don't even try. You find yourself rooting for the shark.

Everything about this movie is thoroughly wretched, but let's start with the fact that it's a Jaws movie where only TWO people get eaten!

Blimey, is it really only two? (I refuse to watch it again to find out!) No wonder it felt so dull. Well, that and all the other things it does wrong... Such a rubbish plot would at least have been a bit justified if we'd got an enjoyable bloodbath as a result!
