As a young kid I met him while he was eating one orange Julious hot dog he stopped eating looked at me and signaled me over to him and politely said hello, shook my hand took a picture with me and signed my hotdog wrapper that I had at the time. He became one of my favorite wwf superstars because of the time he took out for his fans. I never ever forgot that and I am 41 now

Guessing Piper did not want to make it racial and the company pushed it. Or based on Piper's age and how the paint was done, he was inspired by that Star Trek episode with the half and half aliens. In any case, it is amazing WWE never realizes taking shit down only draws more attention to it. Corporations have no concept of the Streisand effect.

I was at WrestleMania VI live at the Skydome in Toronto and Earthquake was massive! Easily one of the fastest moving super-heavyweights in WWE history too. He'd even throw a Dropkick from time to time. When he went to WCW though, he wasn't Shark right away. He was Avalanche when he first arrived and was paired up with Kevin Sullivan and The Butcher (Brutus Beefcake) and sure enough, he was gunning for Hulk Hogan. It was later in the Dungeon of Doom that he became Shark. Then after that he was kicked out of Dungeon of Doom and they shaved half his head. Shortly after that he went back to being just John Tenta as a babyface before leaving WCW. Before his WCW run, he had briefly returned to WWF as a babyface feuding with Yokozuna and squashing Adam Bomb at WrestleMania X; but it didn't last even a year. And who could forget him donning the mask late in his career as Golga from The Oddities during the WWF Attitude Era (originally with Kurrgan and Don Callis and complete with fake head tumors under the mask)?! He went to Japan after that before succumbing to cancer, sadly. Tenta doesn't get nearly the accolades he should though. As a footnote; he didn't enter the business in 1990. Tenta started around 1987 in both Japan for All Japan Pro Wrestling, and in Vancouver, British Columbia (his home province) for Al Tomko's All-Star Wrestling, where he established his name in pro wrestling and was there until he arrived in WWF and did the pushup angle where Dino Bravo and Jimmy Hart called him out of the crowd and he attacked Ultimate Warrior. And as you know, WrestleMania VI wasn't the first time Piper did the half-black makeup. He did it on WWF programming for months leading up to the match in various promos during Event Center with Sean Mooney (or Billy Red Lyons if you were watching in Canada like myself), and of course during that podium interview with Gene Okerlund that you have footage of in the clip. It wasn't intended as a racist thing at all, although Bad News definitely took it that way. Nor was it Piper's idea. But Roddy liked it and ran with it to inject some psychology into the angle. Of course, race baiters will allude to something else. I can tell you firsthand that when Roddy came out painted half black from head to toe at the Skydome for WrestleMania VI, the place popped and the people mostly loved it! The match is also still available many places, thankfully. Censorship has no place in pro wrestling, PERIOD!! Long live Hot Rod, Bad News, and Quake!!!

Earthquake for me is another one of those weird cases of a wrestler that I was deathly afraid of and hated to pieces as a kid. And then later in life, with the benefit of the internet and how everything surfaces, I discovered what an impressive and interesting man he was. I was so shocked to find out that he competed as a sumo in Japan. And apparently he was a very soft spoken and nice man in real life. I saw his Darkside of the ring episode. Very sad outcome to his life. He seems like he would have been an amazing man to have around in this era. I would have loved to hear his stories on interviews and podcasts.

Man, hearing of John Tenta knowing all the stories of what a loveable guy he was backstage and as a family man always gets me a bit misty eyed. That man didn't deserve all the shit that was done and happened to him. As for Bad News Brown: Say about him what you want, but standing up like that to Andre, especially when the latter was still a far cry from being a broken down shell of a giant, took some massive balls. That man wasn't joking and not taking any shit.

Earthquake was a tremendous heel, one of the best, legitimately scary and a legit tough guy too (only he was meant to be a nice guy in real life). Wish he'd had a better longer run in WWE cause his WcW run was awful. As for Piperz who knows what that was all about. I just assumed with Piper, his gimmick was being as controversial as possible and was probably down as a shock an awe show though it was late 80s so who knows how these things were oervievwd at the time as I was to young to know. However they saw it at the time it is widely embarrassing now and thankfully not something anyone would dream of doing.

What happened with the Piper match is that you had Piper sort of working as the face and Brown as the heel. Brown had been there for two years, had worked with most of the top faces in the company, had done OK but hadn't distinguished himself or really proved he could draw a dime on his own. So, they put him with Piper and had Piper screw with him in the hopes that they might actually get something from him, that he might generate some real heat. They also let Brown know that Piper was making 50 grand for the match when he was making 10 grand. They were trying to light a fire under his butt and make a hot feud out of it, build him up so he could have a program with the Warrior. Warrior beat Hogan but since they were both faces there would be no return matches after Mania. They needed heels to work with the champ who could also draw and just not rely on Warrior and the belt. Instead, they put him in a mostly forgettable feud with Jake Roberts and he left after Summer Slam 90. Piper gets the heat for the angle but it was the promotion that ran with it. The office didn't really like Brown too much. He was hard to deal with and he was OK and safe but he never really made any money for them. He spent most of his career in Japan and Calgary and didn't have much of a fandom in the US and the push the WWF had given him for 2 years hadn't changed that. That's what I've gotten out of it listening to shoot interviews and reading between the lines.

Bad News has his own shoot interview, the issue he had with WWF/E is Vince promised him a WWE Title run beating Savage at the time, when it didn’t fall through, he definitely was a pain to the office and they slowly buried him with this, never let him receive anymore title matches, making him carry sewer rats etc.

Wait so Roddy started it with just the face, like a precursor to Braveheart, then in promo it was the half body which is bad enough but maintains it isn't racial, then for the match itself it looks like he added white around his eye(might just have partially removed the black paint) which my understanding is an element of outright blackface....but it's not racial??

Love what Piper did at WM 6! That was great!

I think some people forget how Coliseum Video edited their tapes back in the day. Some interviews and promos were left out (i.e. Piper's interview before he faced Bad News at WM 6). Heck, some matches were even edited or left out entirely (i.e. Mountie vs. Koko B Ware, 1991 Royal Rumble, after the title match that Sgt Slaughter won)

The Canadian earthquake is how I remember him. They brought him in from the upper deck to sit on the ultimate warriors back for a push up contest. And he squashed him. My little kid brain could not comprehend how a fan from the crowd was allowed to do this. And he later went on to crush hulk hulk Hogan and put him out. My 8-10 year old self bought a get well card from the grocery store and sent it to the WWF address for the hulkster. I got back a form letter and a picture of Hulk Hogan. I will always despise what he Canadian earthquake did to Hulk Hogan

My young self hated Hulk, and I loved Earthquake destroying him. My sister however, was in tears, and she too sent a get well card to the address. I will confess I was shocked she received a response, but fair play to WWE for doing so, she was absolutely ecstatic!

I loved him as a kid, he had the same body type as mine and whenever we were mimicking the wrestlers at school I was always the Earthquake! But of course I sided with Hogan when they feuded..

I used to correspond by email with John Tenta about a year or so before his death. The answer to why he left sumo before he was able to join the salaried ranks was partially due to the tattoo, but also because he was having a tough time adjusting to the life of a rikishi and the hard clay dohyo was very hard on his body.

To say "Japanese don't like Tattoos" is a bit of a short answer. You should explain why! And that's it because having Tattoos was something that normaly just members of the Yakuza (the japanese Mafia) had. That's why he had to cover his up, when he was a sumo wrestler in Japan.

Im more befuddled about Piper painting soooo much of half his body black to the point where his damn eye lids to the very damn edge is colored in.... But then he stopped at the space on his lower leg between the top end of his boot and bottom end of knee pad

I still dont see the insult behind Piper's half black painted self. I took it to mean that he doesnt care about race or color, which is why he has both colors on him; black and white, together on the same person. Ebony and Ivory. But who knows? I still dont see the problem with it.
