It's the 'battle of wills' made a bit more literal where the person getting their hair cut wants control over their appearance but the barber for whatever reason is not cutting the hair in the way the client wants. In this film it seems the barber just presumed to know better/prefers a shorter look. When the person getting their hair cut realizes the barber isn't listening to him, he has a kind of anxious fantasy where he vocalizes his upset and refuses to pay for the service because the barber didn't listen to him and the barber attacks him for it. So when the fantasy ends and he instead does not vocalize his upset and pays, you could assume it's because he's anxious and afraid of the barbers reaction. He is still of course miserable with the cut and as he's walking out you can see that there's a meteor falling through the sky--signifying the haircut feels like the end of the world for him.

Settled in for a feature length flick starring an up-and-coming, heretofor unknown actor, directed by next year's breakout filmmaker in his frosh release. Shocked! Shocked when the credits rolled after five minutes. Shocked but not disappointed. Looking forward to the actual Hollywood debut. Soon!
