You'll have dishpan hands by they time they are all trained. It's great how they run and jump around when they can. I think calves enjoy being in a bunch. Sad about the one you lost but it does happen. Three or four hours drive to work? Good video. Pax.

It is a shame that you lost the calf. You sure did a lot to try and save it. Smart idea using the painting mixer to mix the milk. Super video Isaac. Thanks.

I imagine it might not be too hard to make something similar to the heatwave with a little electrical knowhow, heat tape, thermostat, insulated box like a cooler, etc. Definitely very handy.
@FarmandHammer2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I bet someone with a little electrical skills could put one together relatively easy. I do not have that skill unfortunately 😂
@VirginiaBronson2 жыл бұрын
@@FarmandHammer I've made an incubator before, so that's where that idea came from. That and installing speakers and dubious electrical fixes on cars encompasses my entire skill set in that area lol. So I may be overreaching, anyhow

What do you use when they have scours?
@royamor34722 жыл бұрын
here in the UK, each calf has to have 2 ear tags, and it's own passport, before it leaves the farm it was born on, slight difference to you. You send the calves and it's dam, details to a central body, which then sends you its passport While l haven't used the heat wave, have used similar ad-lib feeding systems, they use a lot of milk powder. The second point, your pens are to small, on ad-lib calves wee a lot, and they need a dry place to lay down. You will learn how to cope. We rear a lot of calves per year, and have returned to individual pens, having found that the cheapest, easiest and best, to do. We teach calves to drink from a bucket. Good luck with it all.
@FarmandHammer2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all the advice! I’ve got them in small pens for now just to train them to use the heatwave and get used to eating feed. After a few weeks, the plan is to kick them out to pasture with access to the heatwave and calf starter. You are correct, they do seem to get their pens pretty wet. Im going through a straw bale per day per pen, which is almost twice what I would need to use for 20 calves individually housed.
@lt1nut2 жыл бұрын
@@FarmandHammer Someone from the uk that didn't go on about how much better they take care of cows, how awesome pasturing is above everything else, or female-dog about how inhumane individual pens/hutches for calves. 🎉THROW A PARTY🎉 Keep on making your dream your reality!!
@devenlamar39002 жыл бұрын
Hun having calves u may want to get some spikes. They easily go in their noses and if they try to nurse on another calf that calf gets poked and moves. They can still eat and drink. Look into it. Great product

I’ll have to check it out. I’ve got a few bullies in the group that need to break the habit. Thanks!

I noticed right away when I saw that one with the number 5 tag, that the other calf didn’t make it or something! On the other side of the barn are you gonna put calves there or will it eventually be all one big pen?
@FarmandHammer2 жыл бұрын
I’m using this barn to start the calves on the heatwave and calf feed. After a couple of weeks I plan to kick them all out onto pasture (with access to the heatwave and feed in a separate barn).

Would you consider keeping the wagyu cross as a farm bull, or would he not throw the kind of calves you'd want?
@FarmandHammer2 жыл бұрын
No, he will be a steer here shortly. Since I don’t sell finished animals directly to the butcher, there isn’t a premium for calves like him at a sale barn. So I would continue to use straight beef bulls on the cow herd. But a full blood wagyu bull isn’t out of the picture (not in the near future, but maybe one day).

@@FarmandHammer thanks for the reply, that makes total sense. I enjoy getting to learn so much of farming :-)

You don't weight your milk replacer?
@FarmandHammer2 жыл бұрын
No I go by the cup measurements. I realize it’s not as accurate but when feeding adlib you won’t get each calf to consume the exact amount anyway. They are getting more 20:20 replacer on this system than they were getting on 2x a day feeding. Feed consumption has actually been better so far and they have been eating it all on their own.
@bellalhossain22115 ай бұрын
Hi sir how are you doing, I like ur work, where are you buy babies cows ….. i am living New York …..
@kkennedy96232 жыл бұрын
Using thar system, how do you know if all of them are eating?
@FarmandHammer2 жыл бұрын
I keep an eye on them for the first 6 hours after they are introduced to make sure they all know where to find it. Calves will look really skinny if they miss a feeding or two so it is relatively easy to tell. They will look really hollowed out in the stomach area. So far so good! Even the sick one would get up multiple times a day to nurse.

@FarmandHammer2 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily with the hay prices being what they are! After doing some math, even with milk replacer and labor, I think I will still come out better raising them myself this year. A normal year, nurse cows are generally the cheaper and easier route to go.
