In the book Raban was perceived as stupid, but he wasn't. After all, he was the first to figure out that the Fremen numbered in the millions. And he had his own Intel network of spies. He just wasn't cunning, and was impulsive.
@toomanyaccounts5 жыл бұрын
his impulsive nature overrode any intellect he had. so yes stupid. a smart person overrides their impulses when those impulses are going to be a detriment.
@zannaifacedancer59155 жыл бұрын
I think he was indeed stupid, but he was damn right about the Fremen. Unfortunately his uncle paid no attention. He was insightful enough maybe por once in his life.
@lordfrostwind31514 жыл бұрын
It makes his mistreatment of the Fremen even worse, if he understood the scale of them he severely underestimated their capabilities. Ruling by fear is one thing, but good luck subjugating the population of a death world like Arrakis.
@toddkes58903 жыл бұрын
@@lordfrostwind3151 If people are on a deathworld, that means they need to make most of their work focused on surviving, and Rabban's actions could be enough to tip them over the edge. Each Sietch has to have some industry, ability to grow food, teach the next generation, etc. If Rabban can interfere with the trade links between Sietches (so they can't trade components between each other), force them to hide their operations (so gathering food is trickier), and keep them moving (so education becomes more difficult), it would be possible to slowly reduce the Fremen numbers. And if Rabban's actions ever discovered one of the Fremen water caches, or saw them riding on a worm that would be a major intelligence find. That could have been where Paul helped the Fremen the most, using his extensive high-quality tutoring (vs the Fremen having to almost boot-strap themselves) to run a successful guerilla campaign and to unite the Fremen tribes into a single group (he is an outsider, so does not have any specific preference to one Sietch over another). The Sietches closest to Rabban's troops were primarily military camps (making them much more dangerous for Rabban's forces to attack), while the Sietches farther away were where the families and industry were moved (which is why the Emperor's Sardaukar were able to raid one relatively easily)

Yes, he made several astute inferences that actually surprised the Baron.He also seemed to realize that he was being used to grind the populous of Dune down-though he probably didn't realize it was going to be in favor of Feyd-Ruatha-he was also loyal to a fault, none of these would be traits that would serve him in such a treacherous house.

I don't get why they cut out the first part of this scene. It's extremely entertaining, and actually provides context for why the Baron shouts "get out, all of you, out!"
@nm73582 жыл бұрын
The beginning of this scene was unfortunately truncated from the original mini-series. At the beginning of the original scene, the Baron confronts Rabban on what the hell he was thinking that he was doing. Rabban pleads that he did as the Baron said - that he tried to assassinate Paul to keep them distracted by worrying about their security. The Baron smuggly replies, "Yes, now they certainly do..." before slapping Rabban in the face, to Feyd's laugther. Then, a little interlude with a overly-cheery servant who brings the annoyed Baron a glass of full yellow liquid spice. The Baron at first refuses, but the servant insists because "extension of life is a gift from the spice." The Baron smiles, slowly drinks the glass, then delicately poses the glass before telling him in his basso voice to to get out of his presence. That's when he screams to everyone to get out at 0:02.

You know, I can't help but feel that there's a bit missing from this scene. I could swear I remember an exchange where Raban says that thanks to his initiative, the Atriedes now know how close the Harkonnen can get to them, followed by the Baron saying this, "Yes, now they certainly do." *Slaps Raban's face*

@PeterDivine3 жыл бұрын
@@davidturner6280 Raban gets name-dropped exactly _once,_ and he is the _only_ member of House Harkonnen to get a name in the entire 2.5 hour film. The entirety of House Harkonnen gets maybe a paragraph of dialogue in the whole film altogether. A huge reason Dune has been such a struggle to adapt to film for so many people is because capturing both the worldbuilding of Frank Herbert and the political intrigue of Dune's houses has been a repeatedly oversized task for any film director that's tried, and this remake is no different. It's got the aesthetic, sure, but it's taken the characters and suspense of Dune and stripped it down to a middle-school level interpretation at best. The miniseries has had its practical effects age like children's toys, but it at least gave its actors a script to work with, damnit.
