Let's not forget about the complicity of the writers. They knew steroids were a problem. They also profited of the backs of these players. Million dollar checks were cashed, book deals signed, and were made famous on cable sports channels. The writers are just as much to blame for the steroid era as anyone else. The one thing that I will say in defense of the writer’s is that Bonds was a real jerk, specifically to the writer’s. IN ADDITION, to the steroids use that put him over the top with enough writers. Also, as a Yankees fan, I think that there is absolutely no way A-Rod is a HOFer.

What makes you say that he isn't, like statistically? He has 696 HR, 140 Career OPS+, 117.5 bWAR, 3000 hits, 300 steals. Or would you say that doing the "without steroids" math that he wouldn't be in the HOF had he not done steroids? Or do you just not see the writers giving it to him what with the positive test and getting suspended.
@jonahschloss516

@@Wozrop Two reasons A-Rod isn’t getting 1: If you thought that Bonds was nasty to the media, man oh man, you should have seen A-Rod after he got the biggest suspension in MLB history. 2: Bonds not being inducted sets precedence for other steroid users, none of which were as good as him. Basically, if Bonds got in, he would have a better chance, but since he didn’t, no way is someone with worse number and more positive P.E.D tests than him could make it.

Fuzzy, you shouldn’t say that Ortiz tested positive back in 03, his name was mentioned on a list of suspected cheaters at the time but Ortiz never failed a test and having his name on a list that some random guy made does not mean that he actually did Roids. ALSO Bonds and Sosa never failed a test either, there were speculations of them being cheaters but they never failed a test, I remember in 2012 when Derek Jeter had one of his best seasons at 38yrs of age, getting over 200 hits and batting over 315. Many people accused him of being on steroids, but it died out because he’s Derek Jeter, congrats to Ortiz, hopefully Bonds and Sosa make the hall some day

Baseball needs to put players in who deserve it from their play on the field. However, this is a museum. As such, do not leave out there flaws. Randomly choosing whose morals should fit doesn’t make sense. The first man ever chosen, Ty Cobb, beat the crap out of an armless man yet he is in and on a unanimous selection. Bonds was the greatest hitter I have ever seen it’s a shame that baseball profited from him then shunned him.

I always hated Big Papi. I always thought he was insincere and it was abundantly clear that he’d say whatever was going to get him the biggest round of applause regardless of what his personal beliefs were (for what it’s worth, he comes off as a rather shallow person who doesn’t really have personal beliefs that matter much to him, so I guess the pandering wasn’t AS bad, but still…) also always thought Papi was ridiculously overrated. He was a great hitter. He had some big hits when it mattered (though his actual clutch factor has never come close to what the legends would have you believe). End of the day, nobody outside of Boston is ever gonna remember Papi, he didn’t transform the game in any way, and he was just basically another dude. This year's voting was bizarre. There were so many people who missed out who deserved to make it, such as Bonds and Clemens. However, it's clear that it has nothing to do with steroids, because Big Papi (deservedly) got in. The one that I'm kind of irked by is Curt Schilling. I know he said he doesn't want to be voted in by the writers, and he's been kind of a jerk in his personal life, but he's seriously one of the best pitchers of his generation, was amazing in the postseason, has better stats than most Hall of Fame pitchers in some areas, and never took steroids during an era where everyone was doing it. Rolen, Helton, Wagner, and Andruw Jones are all players who I think should eventually get in, although if they never make it I wouldn't be too surprised.

Ok so here's the deal. I don't care about the PED conversation. Drugs or not you still have to hit and/or pitch the ball. Bond hit like no other, he walked more than anyone because pitchers feared Bonds. So screw steroids/PED's.

Well, the election process is largely in the hands of baseball writers, and they as a group can be quite finnicky and sometimes clique-y. The Veterans Committee also has this problem to an extent. The reason we have guys like Jim Bottomley and High Pockets Kelly as Hall of Famers is because of suspect lobbying by Frankie Frisch who was prominent on the VC at the time.

MLB needs to be specific about what types of PEDs are being used to cause the suspension. Sometimes a player can be suspended for "PEDs" for using certain antibiotics for current injuries and are labeled as PEDs

Open letter to anybody saying papi shouldn’t be in: David Ortiz tested “positive” for something. If you can tell me what he tested positive for exactly I will digress. You can’t. He could’ve tested positive for something that’s still legal. He could’ve tested positive for something that wasn’t legal then, and it EASILY could’ve been a false positive. He never had a chance to defend himself and he never tested positive again for the next 13 years.

Bonds and Clemens both deserve to be in the Hall, without a doubt. The argument is made over and over again that with Bonds, pre-Giants, was already a hall of famer. No one has won more MVPs than Bonds and No one has won more Cy Youngs than Clemens. They both helped to save baseball, beyond McGuire and Sosa; and Rey shops be in the Hall, too. Pete Rose is a no brainier, as well.

As a giant baseball fan, I do think that Clemens and Bonds deserve a spot. That being said I think the negative attention from their lies and general attitude is what cost them. I also coach an 11U team and the one thing I preach every practice and game is that the players who are remembered the most are the ones who stay hungry and humble. Confidence is fine but arrogance makes you look like an immature child. And A-Rod’s percentage was fine to me. He wasn’t as big of a superstar as people made him out to be.

A-Rod shouldn't be aloud in yes the rules were made for Clemens and Bonds but they weren't enforced. It's like those really old laws like "you can't put a donkey in a bathtub on a Tuesday" yes it is there, but why should it be reinforced. But imagine if something came out about how that causes a pandemic in some way. Now it is being enforced, breaking it not once but twice is a much bigger no-no. it's just how it works and you can't change itm

I'm so conflicted with this. On the one hand, I know Clemens and Barry didn't need steroids to be HoFers. But I know there were players who struggled tduring this era that couldn't make a roster or get paid because they were competing against users. Probably a ton of guys doing it without steroids losing jobs and dreams to guys that were. So while I know Barry and Clemens were great, steroid use ruined so many honest people's chances at a fair shot

My only rebuttal is that the MLB only set this precedent in 1991 (banned substance) and in 2003 (actually started testing). How many players before 2003 in the hall of fame either took an illegal substance or steroids? The answer is we’ll never know because the MLB didn’t start testing until 2003. Under that notion I’d say that’s where the debate begins. And in my opinion steroids/cheating/whatever…. is too open-ended in decades past to eliminate these guys from making it now just because the MLB decided to finally put their foot down when it was convenient for them.

It almost seems like it’s just a biased vote on wether you like a certain person or not. Big time Red Sox fan but in my opinion I feel like Bonds and Clemens should be going to the hall alongside Ortiz. The hall of fame isn’t there to showcase the nice respected players. It’s the BASEBALL HALL OF FAME, arguably the greatest player of all time and one of the greatest pitchers of all time aren’t in the hall because they have bad blood and aren’t well respected. In my opinion that should not matter one bit. The Baseball Hall of Fame is somewhere that should showcase the greatest players of all time. The people who changed the way the game is played and brought fans to the stadium with their talent. The voters are outdated and don’t understand todays concept of baseball.

I’m a Padres fan and hate Barry Bonds. But I believe he deserves to be in the HOF for what he meant to baseball for so long. Love or hate Bonds you wanted to see him play. And everyone knows his name. The writers shouldn’t decide who gets in the HOF. The stats should speak for themselves. I agree with you on most of your points except on the Bud Selig comment. You have to hear both sides of the story on this matter. As you know the league cannot enforce anything on players without going through negotiations with the players association (PA) In the 90’s MLB was actively pursuing PED testing; however, the PA kept protecting the players and telling MLB to back down. One of the main issues during the lockout in 94. Therefore, we should not accuse Selig and MLB of exploiting the steroid era to their advantage. It’s an unfair assessment. I love the players; but, steroids benefit their pocket just as much.
