The Basics of Prostate cancer management

A new diagnosis of prostate cancer can be a stressful time for a man and his family. There is a lot of information to try to get your head around whilst trying to decide of which treatment if any you decide to pursue. The aim of this video is to provide you with the basics so that you can be better equiped to navigate your way through this journey. It's important to understand the key characteristics of how we determine what type of lesion someone has and what the treatment choices might be. In essence PSA test, prostate cancer clinical stage and Gleason score provide us with information to determine the risk group of a man's prostate tumour. The Gleason score expIaned should help answer some of your questions about the aggressiveness of someones cancer which in turn provides guidance as to whether or not prostate cancer is required. In addition to these features men will also be staged with a PSMA PET scan as well as the MRI prostate test which is performed prior to the initial biopsy. This completes the required information to allow decision making regarding treatment pathway to be successfully undertaken. The management of prostate cancer can include active surveillance, robotic assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and external beam radiotherappy.
