The reason Blue's carry the city's name goes back a long way when the two clubs were forming. Villa were from Aston and Blue's were from Small Heath. Both clubs had to register their name's with the Football League and agreed to keep the names of the district they were from and neither would take the name of the city. Villa registered as Aston Villa but Blue's went back on the agreement and registered the name Birmingham. The Villa directors were furious and broke off communications with their rivals for years referring to Blues as backstabbers. So began the hostility that remains to this day.

A lot of rivalries are built from power struggles and the fight for dominance and influence. This rivalry (for me anyway) is more to do so with identity. The guy at 4:10 alluded to it. We were the first club founded in Birmingham, a club founded by Brummies, for Brummies. Villa can't claim to be established as a Birmingham club, they were 36 years old (their most successful period) before Birmingham expanded and incorporated Aston and throughout their existence, they have scoffed at any opportunity to represent the city. I see villa as conflicted, "anti-Brummie" and an imposter/fake club, a true Brummie proudly supports the team that represents their home town, moreso over status, stadium and trophies etc. I imagine this is the main reason why they also resent us and call us "Small Heath" because they don't like the fact that we are the sole team that represents Birmingham, but if they don't like it why haven't their fans ever presssured the club to change? is it elitism? Shame of being from Birmingham? we already call them "Identity Crisis FC", what's a name change for them? They'll happily sing anti-Birmingham songs but don't like the fact WE have our city's name. I honestly don't think I'd hate them anywhere near as much if they embraced the identity of the city all those years ago but here we are. TL:DR - Birmingham ❤>>>Aston💩💩

From an historical standpoint Birmingham City were first called Small Heath Alliance (SMA naturally being located in the district of Small Heath). Now legend has it that they had a gentleman’s agreement with the team located in the district of Aston (called Aston Villa) not to take the name of the city (which is Birmingham). SMA broke the agreement. Now the two are bitter rivals ever since.

The blues have won 2 league Cups in 149 years of their history & the only pathetic boast the blue noses have is their 2nd league Cup was won more recently than Villa's last trophy, well just about as Villa's last 2 trophies were 2001/2008 intertoto European trophies & Villa's last domestic trophies were league Cups in 1994/96,so Villa won 2 league Cups in 3 years,it took the blues 149 years to win the same 2 trophies, sad,eh? Nice video n I'm glad you have love for the City of Birmingham and your club, that's nice 👍 I find on the whole the Villa Blues thing is always about banter and friendly rivalry because we all have friends and sometimes family from the other side and throughout the year we always give each other stick but on the whole we all know each other. The major difference is a derby day match. When it's actually a game between Villa n Blues the day itself is intense, the tension is electric and nobody wants to lose. Villa got 4th and qualified for champions league this season while Blues got relegated to league one and of course we at Villa celebrated that and had a laff about it but in reality most Villa fans would rather see Blues do better because we miss those match days. Those couple of seasons we shared in the Championship were wild and great days playing Blues and West Brom.

Birmingham are not Villa's rivals, they're our neighbours. Big difference. It's a shame they don't spend more time supporting their own club rather than obsessing about Villa. It's a point not lost on some of their more educated fans. Until that massive cultural shift happens they'll always be at best a yo-yo club, at worst, irrelevant.
