I have founded this text in an old book, so I've tried to translate it from ancient portuguese:"It was the end of battle. It was at Hattin (Tiberias), on 4 July 1187. In this battle, by (God?) punishment, Saladin's armies defeated Christians armies of Palestine led by miscreants warlords. Everywhere crusaders bodies covered in blood testified their loyalty and, unfortunately, their defeat. The Muslims had triumphed in the battle of Tiberias. The main Christian leaders and even the King of Jerusalem had fallen prisoners of Saladin. Only one man continued to fight. Iron and blood-covered, mounted on a white horse sparkling and exhausted, surrounded by infidels, the last rider resisted. His sword described terrible reels and around were dead enemies who had dared to approach him. The Muslims contemplated him by far, and the furor of their eyes glowed too, after all, a spark of admiration. Who was the man that did not capitulate? What kind of man was this that wouldn't give in, not retreating? Who sprung up a son of such size? Who formed this soul-armor and this untamed heart? Injured and drained of blood horse and rider hurtled earthward. Immediately, he reergue and Pounces on enemies. Everything ends. Everything not. Not only ends the admiration. The death of the hero did grow the admiration. And turks and kurds, savages, the Muslims, the enemies approach and wet his albornozes in the blood of the dead crusader, and split their robes and weapons to save something from memory of bravest of men." (Cfr. Joseph François Michaud)

Great comment, thank you. What book was it? I find it odd to be written in ancient Portuguese (I'm Portuguese, btw) and I could never guess ancient Portuguese would be specially worried with Hattin.

Ive always felt there was a traitor at Hattin and it was Gerard de Ridefort himself. I feel its entirely possible that Saladin broke him while in captivity and he either converted or made some sort of deal for his life. I think this why him urging the march on hattin in the middle of the night doesnt make much sense. When Gerard guy and Raynald were captured it only makes sense for saladin to break the young one. His later death at hattin my of been his way of repenting for what he did so he may have rode recklessly into battle hoping to die and his secrets went with him. He also may have been betrayed by saladin and targeted for death during the battle.

Men are men. Gerard of Ridefort he expected Raymond III of Tripoli to give him the hand of an available heiress. When that didn't happen, Gerard continued to hold a grudge against Raymond of Tripoli, which influenced some of his political maneuverings. Raymond did not what to attack at Hattin, therefore . . . Gerard wanted the opposite. And what were Gerard's connections to the King of France? That may well have prompted his rapid rise in the Templar Order.

Everyone cut the bias and just read The Crusades by Thomas Asbridge.

Gerard de Ridefort is definitely a strange character. On the one hand, it seems completely inconceivable that a complete idiot could be elected Grand Master of the Templars. On the other hand, he's done some really stupid things on the battlefield. His advice to march on Hattin is one, and his attack on a 5,000 strong army at Cresson with 100 knights is another. It is possible that he had great connections. He started his service under Baldwin IV in late 1170s, but by 1179, he already rose to the rank of Marshal of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

In regards to the treatment of the captured Templars/Hospitalers; "tortured them to death", "paraded through the streets in Damascus"; i thought they were beheaded a few days after the battle outside of Tiberias according to the primary sources?, what am i missing? If the beheading of these 100-200 captured soldiers by Salahdin is a act of "a complete barbarian" what would you call Richard the Lionheart's action concerning the execution of the 2000-3000 muslim soldiers captured at Acre?

He explains this in another video, Saladin left Richard no choice because he was delaying the tribute he (Saladin) had to pay to the crusaders. Saladin didn't care enough for his soldiers to pay the tribute he promised. The difference is that Saladin didn't even offer to ransom his prisoners.
