There is a British resonance though. Some years ago a group of Chinese cockle pickers, essentially imported slaves, died on a beach near Blackpool when the sea came in too quickly for them to get away. Blackpool bay is renowned for its dangerous sands. The BBC has always been a bit reticent about this story. Perhaps they were wanting, for some bizarre reason, to make it seem like this activity was a common sight in China and the slaves that died in Britain were just doing what Chinese coastal villagers do ...

They were actually buying oysters from legitimate farms and selling it as their own. Company valuation value kept inflating until it became unsustainable. The BBC has ALWAYS been fake news; portraying an image of propriety while being the exact opposite; ALWAYS. The , only difference over the last 20 years is that they were much much much better at it in the distant past, because they had the stiff upper lip, better training and some standards where they wouldn't take a risk at being too overt with their Disinfo. Now their public face has started to match their true dishonest nature. In 1971 when Britain's ally, Pakistan, was commiting mass killings in what is now called Bangladesh, the BBC completely covered it up (2-3 million people were killed). When India intervened and successfully defeated the Pakistan Army, taking 93,000 PoWs, stopped the killing and liberate the Bangladesh people, the BBC portrayed India as an aggressor and Pakistan as the victim.

All the best! Aside: I'm still so disheartened about how things have changed for the worse (much worse, I think, than anyone anticipated) in China. When you first started your channels, everything seemed so promising - a renaissance, or rebirth, of sorts. It's just so sad. I feel for the millions in China who have no choice but to get by in an oppressed society - and for all those who've been conditioned (through no fault of their own). Edit: Another sad thing about China is how much beauty and wonder you two actually showed to the outside world. I'd always wanted to visit China, something I unfortunately think will never happen now, but after coming across your channels, that desire was renewed. The China you showed was interesting - rich and often beautiful and fill of promise. Then things changed... and they seemed to change quickly... and here we are today. I'm glad you and yours got out safely.

The cruise was abruptly terminated after 3 days. One day earlier, they'd captured a "spy plane", so we were nervous. Kitaro's video helped us and seemed pretty legit. The trip from Urumqui to Kashgar got cancelled 2 days in a row due to high winds, we were nearly stranded once, shaken down ONCE (almost) and by the time we got to Beijing, I was a paranoid wreck. We saw signs for the 2008 Olympics in spring 2001. We couldn't fathom it. No way! We'd accidently seen an heard about dark stuff, but we used our own code to communicate on the fly, even to throw them off a bit as our guide and driver talked in Chinese in front of us. Ugh. I took a group of my students from Shanda to Seaweed Village, where you visited, many years ago. It was very pleasant. Two ancient sisters invited me into their cottage. They told me they had been living in the village all their lives. When I told them how much I liked their cottage they offered to sell it to me because they wanted something more modern. You are wrong about the birds, by the way, there are plenty of them. You just have to know where to look.

Could you please tell us about Dianxi Xiaoge? Her "Farm to table" food channel is beautiful, but I've heard she's an ex-cop. I think she's in Yunnan. She's obviously gotten the ok to have a channel. Is the shangri-la image a farce? I love both of your channels. Wish I could afford to watch your conquering china Doc's, but I'm a broke mofo lol Edit: I saw the Wild China documentary years ago. It's a shame that so much of it is a sham

I don't know if it has any causation but I remember watching a similar documentation about Japan. It might have also been the BBC or Discovery channel. One of the things that stuck with me was a scene about women in the south of Japan that free dive for albalone. They were reported to be in the ages of 70-102 and they were just out there in their little village fishing for shell fish to sell to the local shops and what ever they didn't sell they eat. It sticks with me and there's been a few conversations I've had with friends later in life in which they knew exactly what I was referring to. It's like documentary gold to film old ways of doing things working in a society that is mass farmed, mass butchered, mass processed.

Thanks. I lived in yantai in shandong province for many years. The only time we saw this is when the company would take us on outings and part of it was to dig these up for fun. Most of the beaches in shandong are for tourists or locals to enjoy swimming or walking. Shandong is very subservient to the CCP in my experience.

Wild China was a joint-production with China state TV. Given what you say at 14:00-onwards about "not fully blaming the BBC" and explaining how the Chinese government and state institutions only like to show the best about China, shouldn't a fairedrtitle for this video be "The BBC might have been duped by Chinese state TV"? But then then that wouldn't get so many clicks and publicity for your own documentaries.

Not condoning nor congratulating, just if you had a person visiting you’d try to impress by showing sites. When visiting the farm lands there , I was more concerned of average daily life than sightseeing for a better understanding of their life in whole. But would openly admit, enjoyed visiting the Buddhist temples and shrines.

I lived in Dubai for years- a very similar vibe from the government, even if they are a lot less totalitarian in Dubai. It's all a facade, curated for the global audience who will either never go there and see the horrors, or if they do, will only see the finest tourist destinations. Not the sewage pits, or the slaves. The vast majority of people in the west really have no idea how the world operates. Crime, dilapidation, and fake shit everywhere.

This has just threw me back to 2004 when 21 Chinese immigrants drowned in Morecambe Bay here in the UK. I remember it because it was a big story back in the day when there was not much of an alternative to the MSM and it upset me very much to think the slave trade was still operating in Britain. I question everything the MSM tells me these days. Its very sad to live in a world where we can't trust anything we are told. I only know this, every Chinese person, every European and every Russian person I've ever met has been a solid hardworking and decent human being that was respected by me and it was mutual. I've had quite enough of politicians in the west trying to tell us who I can and can not trust. I would much rather make my own mind up. Thanks for the info.

I don't think it's legit to put this out with a huge banner saying the BBC lied, when they don't follow up with any investigation as to why it happened. They didn't ask the guy why he thought it had happened, whether they used to collect from these shores in the past (the oyster farm may have disrupted wildlife here), was there equivalent locally? They didn't ask the BBC. They don't appear to have followed the train of thought anywhere other than jumping to headline grabbing-sensationalism
