Thanks Tone for reviewing this excellent boxset. I purchased mine online on eBay from a seller in the UK a few years ago that claims to never played it and I believed him as it is in near mint condition. The audio is fantastic. The only minor gripe is that it's pressed on thin vinyl but sounds very clean. I also recommend anyone to buy it as it's more affordable than the Beatles BC13 box, mine was £90 with shipping included.
@beatleytonesbeatleschannel Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you got it at a decent price Tony. Glad you enjoyed the video. It's so great when you buy something blind and it turns up in mint condition - it feels like a little victory. I guess the vinyl thickness was standard for the time - all the Uk albums that I bought back the mid 70s were that sort of thickness too. It hasn't detracted from the sound quality of this box though. Thanks as always for your comment.

Thanks for this vid Tone. I now own two copies of this box set, one from 1980 and one from '82. It is, as you say the greatest and cheapest of all the box sets in respect of mixes and of value. I picked up a copy recently for £70 off ebay and was pleased with it. A great one to play on a rainy summers afternoon, but those photo's chosen for the album covers really are puzzling. But a great box set at a reasonable price and well worth getting if you haven't already.

One of the greatest Beatles box sets this & i remember getting it as a present as a 12 year old in 1980 & i didn't realise it contained several rare mixes until years later & because i played it to death i had to replace my worn out copy years later as most discs were scratched & the box had fallen to bits..... This box set kind of changed my life. In summer 1982 my mum bought the Beatles Ballads record and I was captivated. I'd heard lots of their early songs care of the 'Red' album but these were something else! Then I saw a catalogue advert for this set and persuaded my parents to buy it. I was nearly 14. It arrived in August 1982 and I became totally besotted by The Beatles from that day on...

Great story Chris. It's really true that records change lives - it was the same with me but with the Red and Blue albums. This was really interesting to listen to as I am from NZ and I was employed by EMI they had an office in Lower Hutt NZ and a family friend was an accountant there and he helped me get a a holiday job in the World Record Club Packing Department around 1980 and I picked many of these records for people. The orders back then were from newspaper clippings and I would get a trolley and pick and pack the records for customers orders. I remember this version being very popular and picked and packed many of them to customers. I even purchased a set for myself however I do not still have this as I was in-between houses at one stage and trying to reduce clutter and looking for things that were sellable and I sold my record collection an d my daughter who us now an avid record collector 25 years later tells me I should have kept my collection. While George and Ringo were seemingly silent during ‘80, they were actually busy working on projects: Ringo started recording what became the “Stop And Smell The Roses” album, with contributions from Paul, George and John (who never saw the release of the album), all of whom contributed material to (and, with McCartney, also Produced his track) the album, and George who was recording Somewhere In England, and the few replacement tracks Warner asked for on the album, which for one song, had a (for the wrong reasons) Beatles reunion on the track “All Those Years Ago” (which also features Linda McCartney and Denny Laine).

Agree this is a great box set - my parents got it just after Johns death - it was my introduction to the Fab 4 - I taped it and played it to death in my 1st car and from there brought the catalog when the CDs came out - I still have my parents version and it’s my go to set - perfect blend - enough to give you a great overview and missing the odd key track to make exploring the albums further worthwhile- the bonus alternative mixes are an added extra - the extra trumpet on penny lane is way better than the proper ending

Thanks for this great comment Gavin. Really good point about the missing tracks forcing people to explore the full albums and also interesting that this box was your gateway to The Beatles. This box asumes that the order of the songs in a record is not important. That you can hear Yesterday, Two of us and Love me do one after the other…I think a record was made on purpose in a particular order.

Are we talking about the same box set. Love me Do, two of Us and Yesterday are each on 3 separate LPs in my box set so are not consecutive
@leonardoiglesias2394 Жыл бұрын
@@beatleytonesbeatleschannel yes, it was some example…but this box has that problem. They decide that the order of the songs in an album is nothing of importance but for me it is. If you start hearing something a few seconds after something else ended, well, it makes a difference. Specially for the second piece. Of course, Beatles made mistakes also. I think its terrible to listen to Dizzy miss lizzy after Yesterday. I always hated it. But in general many songs are in a very good order. The most extrem example is the B side of Abbey Road. You cant change anything on that side. Its like changing the pages of a book.

@@leonardoiglesias2394 But we always have the proper albums for this. Think of this box set as a kind of sampler like a greatest hits but much bigger. I bought this from the Daily Mirror advert in November 1980 and played it relentlessly. One rather dark story - upon hearing how I much I paid for it a friend quipped as just a throwaway remark that "it'll be worth a fortune one day when they're all dead". At that time only John and Ringo had reached 40 so the prospect of any of them dying seemed way off in the distant future.

The set was released here in NZ. On the reverse of each sleeve it reads "Released by World Record Club New Zealand 1981". The pic on Record 2 correctly shows Paul as being left-handed. The sleeves have more of a matt finish, not the gloss apparent on your copy. The record label has no reference to EMI or Parlophone. The label is the standard (for NZ anyway) WRC/World Record Club label with an orange outer and yellow inner. Only reference to an album title (on the label) is the group name, it does not read The Beatles Box. Each side has a bold black number indicating which side it is, e.g. Record 7 shows 13 on one side and 14 on the other. It does appear quite frequently in used record stores and would usually be priced around NZ$70.00 (about 35 pound)

I bought the box set in the early 1980s at a record store in the US for $119. It contains probably all of the unique versions of songs around the world, which is why I bought it. It is on high-quality Japaneese vinyl. i'm surprised at low little it sells for today.

Thanx for the vid! I don’t own it, was too young in 1980/81 to be able to buy it (and wrong country…). Pity they used odd pictures era-wise, would be great to have relevant ones. Take care!

Hey you're welcome, glad you enjoyed the video. The BC13 is a great box and yes Rarities had some great B sides on it and sure if you didnt have them (and back in 1979 most of those b sides could only be found on the actual singles) then rarities was a great way to get them. Definitely worth seeking out this box because of the unusual mixes and the decent price. Thanks very much for a great comment

This was a very good video. Thanks very much. I'm kicking myself as I live in Hong Kong and saw a near mint version of this box set 2 years ago in a used vinyl shop for 600 HKD, ...about 100 Canadian dollars. Not knowing what it was, and thinking (wrongly) that it was an unofficial rip off, I didn't buy it. Damn. I've not seen it again since. I'll keep looking, but a 'no postage required' deal like that here is very hard to come by. I'll keep looking though...

Great and educational video mate.Nice research.Tone need your expertise.Hearing that The "BFL" is all analogue, like the BC13? Just got myself a copy of that, and wondered if you think they are comparable sound wise and worth going after? I hear they are supposedly quieter, and compressed more, due to the number of tracks on each side?
@beatleytonesbeatleschannel6 ай бұрын
Thanks very much , glad you enjoyed the video. The box is certainly all analogue but I dont have the BC13 box to compare it against. I would say the sound on this is as good as the stereo Beatles albums that I bought in the 70s when I first became a fan but obviously those albums I played to death and have seen better days now , whereas this box ive only had for a couple of years and was near mint when I got it. I play it when I fancy hearing the songs in a different order to the regular albums. Its not a perfect box but for the money it sounds great and is great value

@@Stickermania2853 Hi Frank, I must admit I often find myself disagreeing with Andrew at Parolgram when he does his what sounds best videos, and in a recent video he revealed what gear he uses to listen on and he's using a mid priced orofon blue MM cartridge which doesn't give the kind of detail that good MC cartridge would deliver. Of course sound is so subjective - everyones ears are different and of course everyone is listening on different gear. if I was to stick my neck out, I would probably plump for the SFF on the 2017 Pepper box set as the best sounding version. Not analogue but analogue doesn't aways mean best and to me this sounds best to me on my (fairly high end ) system.. but like I say sound is subjective. Interesting comment though.

“Don’t Pass Me By” is stereo on mine. But I have the Japanese pressing, so I don’t know if some of the mixes varied by country. An older Wikipedia entry for the set listed “Help!” as being in mono! I’d also like to note that “Thank You Girl” and “This Boy” are mono (as on the Rarities LP), and the four Long Tall Sally EP tracks have their channels reversed (as on the U.S. and MFP versions of Rock ‘n’ Roll Music). “And Your Bird Can Sing” is the standard U.K. mix (again, at least on the Japanese pressing). “Rain” being in stereo and “Paperback Writer” having the channels reversed would indicate both of those tracks being sourced from the U.K. version of Hey Jude. “All You Need is Love” in mono already has a long fade, but it seems to be even longer on here. The 1965 mix of “Day Tripper” was also on the U.K. Red album - the 66 remix was pretty much exclusive to the Oldies comp and didn’t become the standard mix until 1988. The fake stereo “P.S. I Love You” and “She Loves You” were more or less standard at the time - something they thankfully did away with when they did the 2009 remasters (although that particular fake stereo version of “She Loves You” has never been released on CD). And as for “Bungalow Bill”, I think that was a mistake. As we all know, most of the tracks on the White Album all run right into the next. They probably just misjudged how to do the indexing. The “Hey O!” at the end is also missing. A couple of the other WA tracks have their fades lopped off a little early as well (“I’m So Tired” for example). Lastly, it is a travesty that no songs from the second half of the White Album were included. A mistake that has recently been repeated on the new Blue album.
