That's Billy Preston on the keyboard playing that riff. George asked him to stop in during the recording sessions to cut some of the tension in the studio. He wound up playing on several songs, especially Get Back.

John and Paul played off each other so effortlessly, and their voices blended marvelously. Even at the end, when there was great tension and the band was on the verge of breaking up, you can see how much fun they still had playing together. One of the amazing things about this performance is that they had only just worked this song out downstairs in their studio hours before, with John scribbling the lyrics on scraps of paper as he came up with them. Those were truly magical times.

The Beatles were planning on doing a live concert event for TV to wrap up their album project Let it Be. In addition they were shooting film footage of how they created the album. But in the end they couldn't agree on where, and how they would do the live concert. They had stopped touring in 1966. So, at the last minute they decided to stage a live concert on the roof of their company's (Apple Records) building on Savile Row in London. They had no permits, permissions etc. So, neighboring businesses called the cops and the concert was cut short. The streets below were filling up with people as word spread and traffic was stopped creating a lot of problems. The people on the streets initially had no idea what was happening.

I believe that was Billy Preston on the keyboard. He worked with them on and off for a few years. John Lennon was indeed married before Yoko. Cynthia was married to him early on and had a son with him - Julian - but John didn’t have much contact with him, to the point that Paul actually spent more time and attention to the young boy than John did. Of course, Julian has since become a musical artist himself, and looks a lot like his father. By the way, Paul wrote the iconic “Hey Jude” for Julian.

Many guitar heavy metal oriented folks don't get that the Beatles were variety and a vocal band first and foremost. And songwriters. They grew up with rock and roll but also all kinds of other music and infused it into their own. Then these folks hear here While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter, Yer Blues, that kind of stuff and exclaim "now yer talkin.'" What a laugh and a limited musical preference. Back in the day the Beatles didn't have kiss anybody's hind, they just did different style and didn't have to apologize of kowtow to anyone.

My friends and I would drive around in one friend’s car listening to the radio for the DJ to play their latest song at the appointed time. Then we would talk about how much we liked the song and why. These were singles, not the whole album at once. We are 17,18 and 19. Little did we know they would be loved by millions for more than 60 years now!❤❤❤❤ John, Paul, George and Ringo (Richard).

Thanks, Saeed, for playing my request. It is a very rich song and the more you dive in, the more there is to dive in about The Beatles. I recommend watching Beatles 64 first, and then watching "Get Back". To me, the "Get Back" documentary was extraordinary for many reasons, not the least of which is the amazing sound and video quality that Peter Jackson was able to create through more modern technology of 2021. It was a complete labor of love. You feel like you are there. and it is very special, especially to die-hard fans. Their later albums like Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour (also a TV special) and the White Album are full of experimentation with sound (such as playing sounds backwards and more), with the evolving technology of the times, and they also began to include classical music instruments like violin, cellos, french horns, and clarinet, in addition to their continuing exploration with sitar and the sound of eastern music. It's a beautiful evolution with so many different styles of music. Excited for you to keep discovering.

the Beatles were astonishing, from the start of their careers to the end of the Beatles, and beyond into their solo careers... there really is nobody comparable (closest is the Rolling Stones)... they did another take of this song, probably because John muffed some of the lyrics (when he' singing gibberish).

Previous to this, the last time they performed live was during a US tour with 8 shows in 11 days, and the last concert was August 29, 1966 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. So it was about 2 and a half years since they played live until this impromptu appearance. During their 3-4 weeks of working on this project, they were coming up with a number of different ideas for a finale to this project, and the idea of just going upstairs onto the roof was a last minute thing, formulated only in the last several days. They also had a drop-dead date at the end of the month, because Ringo was committed to start work on a film with Peter Sellers the following week, called The Magic Christian.

The resulting album, Let It Be (1970), was the last to be released, but Abbey Road (1969) was the last to be recorded. Incidentally, Don't Let Me Down wasn't included in the album but was the B side to the Get Back single.

Love this recording of the Beatles at the end of thier time together. You mentioned the riff at the end of your reaction at 7:49, I'm pretty certain that is by the talented Billy Preston on keyboards and not Paul. You can see Billy clearly at 3:02 and after that you see part of his head to the left of Paul's guitar. Billy played keyboards on the Get Back sessions and played with the Stones Eric Clapton among others. He is sometimes referred to as the Fifth Beatle. He cowrote "You Are So Beautiful" made famous by Joe Cocker. He had several hits of his own including "Nothing From Nothing" and "Will It Go Round in Circles".

Pete Best was the original drummer with The Beatles but ofcourse Ringo Starr turned up!! When I was working in Liverpool I met him as he was a Manager for th business I was working for. Couldn't believe it when I met him quite often. Donkeys years ago!! He was with the Beatles from 1960 - 1962, not long ago!! It was the B side of the single Get Back.

This is not quite accurate. Preston was a good friend of the Beatles, but apart from appearing with them in the rooftop concert documented in the Peter Jackson directed documentary “Get Back,” Preston only recorded with the Beatles a handful of times. His most notable contribution was on the single “Get Back” which was credited as the Beatles with Billy Preston. That was the only time another artist received credit on a Beatles recording. Besides “Get Back” Preston played background electric organ on two or three tracks on the “Abbey Road” album.

Growing up listening to The Beatles. Went to their movies Help Yellow Submarine. When me and my girlfriends went to see Let It Be at the movies we thought they would go on forever. Unfortunately a day or two later seeing this movie we heard the worst words ever The Beatles broke up and are no more. This was the next to last album that they recorded, with the working title of Get Back, and then a long convoluted story of production issues and band drifting apart, delayed it for over a year. The producer/engineer Glyn Johns who did several of the Rolling Stones classic albums, had engineered the Get Back sessions, and did two mixes of album, but they were both rejected by the Beatles. Months after these recording sessions, they got together to do one last album, and they recorded and released Abbey Road in September 1969, which was the last studio album that they made. After that, in 1970, the Get Back project was resurrected, now renamed Let It Be, which included the original documentary film and accompanying soundtrack. The audio tapes were given to Phil Spector who did the final mix for the soundtrack, and that was ultimately released as their final studio LP, Let It Be, in May 1970.

How did it end? Yes, it's all in the documentary, the cops ended it, peacefully. And the concert ends with one of the most iconic lines ever uttered in music. After they finished playing, John said, as if addressing the world as the audience "Thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition." That's included on the Phil Spector mix of Let It Be. After that, they went back downstairs and continued work on the album, and I believe the documentary shows them in the studio, listening to some playbacks of what they had just recorded.

A few enthusiasts have recommended you watch the "Get Back" series. However, I recommend it only for the most fanatical of Beatles fans (of which I am probably one), because it is extremely long (several installments) & very slow-moving. But do not despair; the last part, the rooftop concert, is well worth watching, including the half-hearted attempts by the police to shut it down.

Just watched "64" on Disney +. Great documentary about the cultural phenomenon of Bestlemania that swept the U.S. during the Beatles first concerts in America. Get Back is about the creation of the album "Let it Be." The Beatles' final live performance. The documentary is worth every one of its 9 hours (seriously, it's fabulous). Three or four days after this recording, they were back in the studio to record their final album, " Abbey Road."

This was the last time we ever saw the Beatles together on TV or in a movie or anything else. It was done in business district at lunch time. This was originally from their 1970 movie "Let It Be" which is showing now on Disney+. We'll worth watching. They do around six songs, till the cops make them stop. The album "Let It Be" was the second to last recorded, but the last released, due to them getting bored with the project and filming. They went on to record "Abbey Road" which was their last, and greatest album.

But the Beatles being artists, they were not content to perform past hits ..or even current hits. Instead, they wrote and recorded all NEW songs. They were artists driven to create art.

In 1956, John Lennon started a school band called "The Quarrymen". They went to The Quarry bank school. In 1957, his band mate IVAN SANDERSON, introduced him to a 14 year old kid who could actually remember lyrics to songs (unlike John who made a lot of his up as he went) named Jimmy McCartney (James Paul McCartney._) He asked Paul to join after a performance of Eddie Cochran's 20 flight rock. A year later, Paul's bus mate to school, George Harrison (13 years old) impressed John and Paul with an audition on the top of a double decker bus (George's dad was a bus conductor) The rest of the quarrymen had left, and it was now just John, Paul and George, playing at dances and basement parties. Occasionally, they would get a drummer here and there, but it wasn't until 1960 that they hired Pete Best to drum for them, and also John's college friend, Stu Sutcliffe was on bass. Their names were, "Johnny Silver and the Moondogs", Long John and the Silver Beetles, "The Silver Beatles" and then, thanks to Stu, "The Beatles" a play on words involving a drum beat, Beat poetry, and the insects, honoring their hero, Buddy Holly, (and the Crickets). After 2 years of scrambling the UK and Hamburg Germany, a fill in drummer, Ritchie Starkey (Ringo Starr) sat in with them (he was a long time, well known Liverpool musician and a pro to them, and the best drummer in England at the time) Since nobody could be fired, they had their manager talk Pete Best into quitting the band, and Ringo was in that weekend. For 8 more years they created music, having hit it big with LOVE ME DO just weeks after Ringo joining, and PLEASE PLEASE ME a few months later. Their first album, recorded all in one day, months later was on the American charts in 1964, with all the top 5 spots on the top 100 being Beatles songs. All 14 songs were on the top 40 AT THE SAME TIME. They released 2-3 albums per year and toured incessantly until 1966, then being music studio masters. Since the Beatles split, McCartney released a total of 50 albums, arias, and film soundtracks in 50 years. The most prolific and successful musician in history. Of the biggest sellers in music, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Queen are all impressive, with Queen in 2nd place at nearly 400 million units sold. The Beatles, have over 1 billion units sold. Nobody comes anywhere near their reign.

They played on the roof because they were afraid of the crowds. They're contract said they had to perform a live show, so this fulfilled the contract a live show. Turns out they were right to be afraid with John being shot by a fan and George was stabbed by a fan after she broke into his home.

The Rooftop Concert is part of musical history, it was all in the 3rd episode of Peter Jackson's Get Back. You should watch the entire documentary which runs around 7-8 hours split over 3 episodes, but if you just want the rooftop, at least do the 3rd episode.
