I think you mean, that the low sound quality make you think, that this beauty recorded her song for you with a smartphone, or sang it through skype to you, or something like that. That makes it much more personal - and combined with the meaning of this lyrics, much more near , like a whisper into your ear. I think this is, what makes this song as it is, so unique.. everyone who listen to it, can think: ashley johnson "wants to hold you(r hand)" Im not sure, but i think that was , what you meant.

That the recording quality and the low crackle in the background somewhat make it sound like an actual vinyl from the 60s. Of course, because of this it also conveys a more personal note than a perfect studio recording does, so you definitely have a point. Still, for me, personally, it's the vinyl-like feel to the song that really got me.
