This was a very nuanced political statement from John Lennon. He was caught between two extremes in the politics of the Vietnam war. On the one side, people wanted him barred from the U.S. for public opposition to the war. He was hounded by FBI agents and received death threats, and even faced deportation court action (which he defeated). On the other hand, he faced extreme people on the left who thought he wasn't radical enough, because he didn't support violent protests. Many of them accused him of being "fake." But he spent a lot of money on lawyers to be "fake" then, when all he had to do to stop the case against him was recant is public opposition to the war. This song was his response to them. Great documentary - The United States vs. John Lennon.

About the keyboards: If I understand correctly what I've read online, this video had the Beatles singing live over a pre-recorded instrumental track, which has Paul on Hammond organ and legendary session keyboardist Nicky Hopkins on electric piano. And yes, this song was written by John Lennon (but credited to Lennon-McCartney, as were all the Beatles songs that were written by either one or both of them). Usually but not always, the principal songwriter sang lead vocals.

Rule of thumb with the Beatles...whoever sings the song is the author. With Ringo, he usually covered songs but he'd sing whatever song was offered. He did write OCTOPUSES GARDEN, however, plus later, PHOTOGRAPH.

Generally speaking, whoever wrote the song usually sings lead vocals. The songs for Ringo were written for him before 1966 but the first song written completely by Ringo is on the White Album and is called Don't Pass Me By.

It was ironic how John was singing about not wanting political involvement but only a few years later lived in NYC and was at the forefront of protests against the Vietnam War. He was on the enemies list of President Nixon and almost deported for a pot bust, but then came the Watergate scandal and also the end of the war !

John Lennon, who was singing wrote it. He was assassinated outside his apartment by a deranged fan. Paul played bass here, he still tours at 80. George Harrison, guitar, died of cancer in November, 2001. Ringo Starr, drums, still tours at 82 with the Ringo's All-Starr Band. The keyboards were played by Nicky Hopkins. Elvis had his first hit in 1956, the year after I was born. The Beatles released their first album in the UK in 1963, their first US single came the day after Christmas, 1963. They became huge in the US when they opened and closed The Ed Sullivan Show on Feb. 9, 1964.

You've reacted to this song previously. John Lennon wrote this song as well as sings lead vocals. Songs written either by, partially or together by John and Paul were always jointly credited to both while they were in The Beatles. Elvis came first, he started making records in the mid 50's and was a big influence on members of The Beatles who were in their mid-teenage years at that time. The Beatles did not start making records until the 1961, first as a backup band for Tony Sheridan and then on their own in late 1962.

This was most definitely NOT a McCartney song, and he was most definitely NOT the revolutionary of the group - that was all John Lennon, who pushed envelopes and was revolutionary his entire career, especially from '68 through '72, so much so that Nixon actively revoked and then blocked Lennon's visa requests through 1974 for fear that he would rile up the revolutionary youth of the time with his equal rights and anti-war (anti-Vietnam, in particular), stances, protests, and music. At the same time, Paul, who wrote some very good, very melodic, but decidedly not revolutionary tunes, was ensconced away on his farm in the Scottish lowlands.

This song was part live but mostly recorded. (September 4th 1968) The Beatles filmed promotional clips for ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Revolution’ at Twickenham Film Studios. They arrived at the studios at 1.30pm and worked until evening. The set, at the studio’s stage one, had been assembled over the previous three days. Only The Beatles’ lead and backing vocals were recorded live, although instruments and amplifiers were set up. The Musicians’ Union had placed a ban on miming, and the live vocals were an attempt to hide this.For the ‘Revolution’ clips The Beatles overdubbed a new vocal track onto the studio version. Paul McCartney performed the scream during the introduction, and the ‘shoo-be doo-wop’ backing vocals from the slower, then-unreleased ‘Revolution 1’ were sung.

John Lennon was 16 when he met Paul McCartney who was 14. John invited Paul to join his group, then Paul brought George Harrison to join. This was around 1956. Several years later, around 1960, they were playing the clubs in Hamburg Germany, and they met Ringo Starr, the same age as John. They hit it off, and dismissed their drummer, Pete Best, and replaced him with Ringo, right before they signed their first recording contract with their legendary producer, George Martin, the official 5th Beatle. He had a lot to do with their sound. And the rest is history.

John made a second version of Revolution for the White Album a few years after the original. In the second version he ends every line with "out/in." At that point in 1968 he thought society was due for a revolution since it seemed to be falling apart. The old established ways were too controlled by money and not helping the common folk. There are two versions of this song. This was the single version. It was also on The White album as a much slower song. The Beatles were seen as leaders of cultural change. There was much turmoil and conflict at this time. What did the Beatles have to say? This is their response. The lyrics are very good. 'Everything is going to be alright'. 'But if you want money for people with minds that hate. All I can tell you is brother you have to wait'. 'You tell me it's the institution. Well, you know you better free your mind instead'.

You asked if they are brothers? I'd love to know how you got the vibe they were brothers! They met when they were teens. John and Paul in particular were incredibly close, way more than brothers. They both lost their mothers when they were teens, and they also spoke the same music language. Fun fact: They shot the video for Hey Jude the same day, and in Hey Jude, John is wearing the same shirt Paul wore for Revolution! They were about the same size and shared clothes all the time.
@papercup2517
@papercup2517 Жыл бұрын
Oh, great observation - I never noticed that! I didn't know they shared clothes either, at least not after they got rich enough to be able to buy their own! I could well imagine they might have shared during the Hamburg stints though, when they were sharing pretty much everything... including, well, you know, the George thing... :-) One reason that has been cited (possibly by Paul, but I can't really remember) for the partial disintegration of their closeness later was the fact they were no longer doing everything together - touring, playing gigs day and night, 7 days a week (or eight, some say..) sleeping in the same room, sometimes in the same bed... and maybe, sharing clothes... I feel that sort of physical proximity bonding had to have contributed both to their tightness as a band of soul-brothers, and tightness as a band. They just knew everything about each other... When they first got together for song-writing sessions as teenagers, Mark Lewisohn reports John and Paul would sit facing each other with their guitars in Paul's Dad's front room, just staring into each others' eyes for hours or watching the chord patterns the other was making, waiting for the tunes to come... Fast forward and you can still see John, always staring at Paul or the two of them exchanging glances and knowing smiles, for example in the Hey Jude performance from the same sessions as this Revolution..

and the Beatles were NOT "children" when Elvis was popular in the late 50s, they were already in their mid teens.

@@patticrichton1135 To me, children is anything under 18. John, who was the oldest, was 15 when "Heartbreak Hotel" came out. George was 12.

The Beatles came over to the US in '64, the year I was born so they were before my time. Ringo Starr is the drummer and my favorite to this day.

I was a junior in high school in 1970. I was lucky to have a bus driver that played the radio for us on the ride to school. I still remember how this song made me feel. The Viet Nam war was on all our young minds, and I knew I'd soon be registering for the draft. I don't to this day understand why it took so long to get out of there.

It's the great Nicky Hopkins on piano. Billy Preston had nothing to do with this song. The camera man doesn't pan over because this isn't a totally live performance. All of the instruments were on a prerecorded track but the vocals were live. Peace

John was the primary writer being the rebel that he was. The "out, in" lyric got them in a lot of trouble with the public at the time, especially because this was aired on the very controversial "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" as a statement of support for the two brothers who were about to be kicked off the air from CBS. Each Beatle had what singers call a "warm" voice as opposed to a "crisp" voice which is one of the reasons their voices blended so well together. Give the song "Because" as listen if you want to hear amazing three part harmonies! 😉

NO: it was John Lennon who wrote it. It's easy to know who wrote what, whether part of or whole song, by who sings lead.

It's Nicky Hopkins on electric piano, McCartney on Hammond organ. Preston has nothing to to with this song.
