The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics, instead, are still blinded by commercial success. The Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. In a sense, the Beatles are emblematic of the status of rock criticism as a whole: too much attention paid to commercial phenomena and too little to the merits of real musicians. If somebody composes the most divine music but no major label picks him up and sells him around the world, most rock critics will ignore him. If a major label picks up a musician who is as stereotyped as can be but launches her or him worldwide, your average critic will waste rivers of ink on her or him. This is the sad status of rock criticism: rock critics are basically publicists working for major labels, distributors and record stores. They simply highlight what product the music business wants to make money from. Hopefully, one not-too-distant day, there will be a clear demarcation between a great musician like Tim Buckley, who never sold much, and commercial products like the Beatles. At such a time, rock critics will study their rock history and understand which artists accomplished which musical feat, and which simply exploited it commercially. Beatles' "Aryan" music removed any trace of black music from rock and roll. It replaced syncopated African rhythm with linear Western melody, and lusty negro attitudes with cute white-kid smiles. Contemporary musicians never spoke highly of the Beatles, and for good reason. They could never figure out why the Beatles' songs should be regarded more highly than their own. They knew that the Beatles were simply lucky to become a folk phenomenon (thanks to "Beatlemania", which had nothing to do with their musical merits). That phenomenon kept alive interest in their (mediocre) musical endeavours to this day. Nothing else grants the Beatles more attention than, say, the Kinks or the Rolling Stones. There was nothing intrinsically better in the Beatles' music. Ray Davies of the Kinks was certainly a far better songwriter than Lennon & McCartney. The Stones were certainly much more skilled musicians than the 'Fab Four'. And Pete Townshend was a far more accomplished composer, capable of entire operas such as "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia"; not to mention the far greater British musicians who followed them in subsequent decades or the US musicians themselves who initially spearheaded what the Beatles merely later repackaged to the masses. The Beatles sold a lot of records not because they were the greatest musicians but simply because their music was easy to sell to the masses: it had no difficult content, it had no technical innovations, it had no creative depth. They wrote a bunch of catchy 3-minute ditties and they were photogenic. If somebody had not invented "Beatlemania" in 1963, you would not have wasted five minutes of your time reading these pages about such a trivial band.
@sloancostella27722 жыл бұрын
"Contemporary musicians never spoke highly of The Beatles" .. . ohhhhh really? Let's seeeeeeeeee ahhhhhhhhhh Elton John, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Billy Joel, Phill Collins, Ozzy Osbourn, Susana Hoffs, E.L.O., Charlote Church, Aerosmith, Mark Mothersbaugh, The Bee Gees, Guns 'n Roses, Peter Gabriel, Cat Stevens, Brian Ferry, Joe Cocker to name just a handful that come immediately to mind - all "contemporary musicians" who have spoken highly of The Beatles and have publicly cited them as a creative influence and, in some cases, have even covered songs of theirs. Then again, perhaps THIS^ numbskull considers THOSE artists just more awful "white-boy" music as well? . .. who knows! And "they were photogenic"? . .. Who's he talking about THERE? . . Ringo Star?
@gdn862 жыл бұрын
@@sloancostella2772 Yeah, I read that whole diatribe, and he just doesn't like the Beatles. I like all the other bands he mentioned. Not sure why he hates the Beatles. The White Album is incredible, and better than most of the Whos catalog. The Kinks wrote some great songs, but not nearly as many as the Beatles. The Rolling Stones were almost as famous, and again, never wrote as many great songs. In fact, the Stones wrote some horrible music later in their career that was a sad attempt at remaining relevant. The Beatles, for obvious reasons, out side of McCartney and Ringo, didn't really go that route. The entire argument against the Beatles this comment, as well as the podcast makes, is "they were popular because of the machine around it". They also wrote a lot of great music.

No dum dum, The Beatles weren't what one could aptly call a "boy band". Firstly, they were YOUNG MEN in their early twenties (the same age group that most other Rock musicians were at the time) not boys. Secondly, the term "boy band" wasn't coined till the late 90's and referred distinctly to certain groups like N Sync and Backstreet Boys and THOSE groups were not similar to The Beatles at all. THEY were actually much more derivative and reminiscent of r&b all-vocal groups from the 50's like The Platters, Four Tops and Temptations than The Beatles.

I'm also going to recite some historical trivia about their influences, but I'm not going to explain what makes this worse than other bands with the same influences beyond 'I like those ones and don't like The Beatles'." Mosley: "If I just repeat without explanation that The Beatles 'dumbed things down' and 'are like KidzBop' enough times, nobody will notice that I don't have an argument." @@pheonix5597 There is an argument to be made that American record labels appropriated the music of neglected and impoverished black artists for financial gain, and the Beatles were partly inspired by many great black rockers like Chuck Berry and Little Richard, but trying to claim that Beatles created nothing for themselves nor contributed anything unique is preposterous. In Rubber soul, they elevated Appalachian folk music to exceptional heights by combining it with British baroque pop, and Revolver drew heavily from emerging psychedelia and classical Purcellian composition. They were incredibly eclectic in their tastes and borrowed from everybody while making music that always was undoubtedly 'theirs.' Other 60's icons like Bob Dylan worked almost exclusively within white songwriting traditions, revering folk heroes like Woody Guthrie.

I love the Beatles, but the idea of hearing a well informed bash of them is really intriguing. These guys kind of fall short. I'm listening to these on the bands I like but some of their points are pretty uninteresting. "Oh John Lennon got his "whoo" from Little Richard" Do we not all not know that music is at least in some part derivative? "Oh Mozart got that idea for a progression from Bach, fuckin' ripoff" I've inherited a lot of vinyl from the era when The Beatles were king and there aren't too many bands whose albums are 90% substance. People who talk about music these days as if it's some plague need to listen to what was on the shelves of teenagers in the late 60s, there is so much garbage. What I'm trying to say, is that buying a Beatles record back in the day was a good value. You can pop sucker down on the platter and let it go for 20 minutes without wishing you could scratch a crap filler song off of it. They have some filler, but they're not unbearably bad songs. They're ratio of good / bad is pretty damn impressive. Did they even mention George Martin?

You have a point there was a lot of absolute bullshit music in every era. But the fact is that there is a change in who becomes popular purely because of looks or what suits a large type of audience. example: if we take two decades of music the 60's and the 2010's you will find that the 60's was focused on their music as priority number 1 and looks as a less important thing, most likely has something to do with social media that looks and style are more important. Now I'm not talking about the garbage stuff that came out I'm talking about the most popular artists of both decades.

Yeah I used to listen to them when I was obsessed with finding good music and for some reason I respected their opinions and this is the list pixies The Beach Boys Led Zeppelin Van Hallen Guns and roses But the thing is this list kind of shows that most of the points they make about other bands are stupid and biased Nirvana- They didn’t like it because Kurt Cobain wasn’t technically skilled but neither were any of the pixies they were a garage rock band and Kim Deal learned to play a bass after she auditioned Weezer and Neutral milk hotel- they criticized both bands for their gross sexual lyrics and for how Rivers Cuomo allegedly wrote a song about a teenage Japanese girl that was sexual in nature but Jimmy Page actually dated a 14 year old and Van Hallen has songs that are blatantly sexual in gross ways too, same as guns and roses And The Beach Boys also had influences that included black musicians Unless this is all an act and they’re trolls it was a waste for me to bother with these guys. After I learned about music theory and how complex Radiohead, the Beatles, and Jimmy Hendrix’s music was it was kinda clear that a lot of their popularity was earned These guys know next to nothing about music analysis or the music industry. No dum dums, The Beatles weren't what one could aptly call a "boy band".

Nice try guys! If you really wanted to get a lot of attention with this podcast, you were very successful. Look: you even got me to write a comment. One of the very few I've ever done on KZbin. As a musician myself who has played a wide variety of genres and studied music for over 30 years, I have to admit that The Beatles were a sensational band. They did not steal anything from anybody; instead they did what every other great musician has done: 'use what was done before you and innovate'. And at innovating, they were one of the best. I don't know what you consider great music, but whoever you think it's great, did the same thing: 'use what was done before you and innovate'. Very important: you talk about them stealing from musicians of color. Well, The Beatles helped with the recognition of those musicians who were discriminated during the 60's and allowed them to earn respect and a lot of money through royalties. @Da D youre telling me that their first #1 hit "please please me" and their last #1 hit "The long and winding road" was "barely an improvement"?? Im sorry but that point doesnt make much sense. Also no not all rock bands dont have amazing music from the get go. Some do i will admit but those instances are rare. Bands grow with each other and experiment later on so it would make sense that in the early stages of any musicians career that they played safe marketable pop songs to get started and even then those songs are fun. Also yes in agree just harmonizing is not enough to sell a band, but not only did the beatles have incredible lyrics, orchestrations, studio wizardy, amazing melodies, innovative sounds they brought to music as a whole, ON TOP of harmonizing, but they really good at all of those things. Also about the harmonizing thing, listen to "because" since those harmonies are soso amazing
@beef93 жыл бұрын
@Da D disagree. It is rare and you only being able say zeppelin as an example proves it. Besides, saying early work reflects the entirety is pretty ignorant. Beethoven didnt write the moonlight sonata in his early days, queen didnt debute with Bohemian Rhapsody, hell zeppelin was not at their peak when they started. And the beatles later work are proof that bands can evolve and get better. If a band was judged from early work and just early work, no one would go anywhere. This point just seems really dumb

1. I like how you debunked arguments that no one mentioned in the first place. I’ve never heard anybody say that “the Beatles were great cause of beatlemania” . 2. Saying that they ripped off black rock and roll is not a great point. The Beatles were very influenced by black rock and roll, (as anyone in general would be influenced when wanting to do something). even by the covers that they made, You could hear it in their tone voices that they really enjoyed playing those songs. Not because of popularity or fame, because they have already achieved that when they released their first hit single called “love me do”. (Written by Paul ) . if you really want to talk about ripping off, talk about “surfing USA” and even Chuck Berry ripping off “route 90”... 3. I can understand talking about the marketing of the Beatles and how they dressed and whatnot just for the money, but that’s only because of their manager. After their manager passed away, and way before when they first tried narcotics, that was the turning point that made them more free from being a marketing act and more about the music. 4. Wtf does Charles Manson have to do with the Beatles being bad? People’s interpretations of songs are not always the same because the actual writer of that song has probably viewed it in another way... 5. Saying that the Beatles would be backlashed by social media because of the drug use is pointless, nearly every band at that time was probably high on drugs as well. Not to mention that today’s popular mainstream rap heavily popularizes the ghetto lifestyle of guns, women, money, and drugs. And it’s fans are cool about it. So i don’t think drug usage would’ve been a problem if social media existed back then. Overall, I’m not mad because you think the Beatles are trash. I can care less about what you think. In fact I like satire, if that’s what your going for. Although, that’s not what I heard from this podcast. It would’ve been funny if you were to just mention how dumb their music sounded or how stupid they looked in suits, which I did hear a little about. But you tried so hard to actually give points as to why the Beatles are bad. However, your points were really bland. and sounded a lot like a edgy, jealous person who just hates everything. Therefore I’m more annoyed by the fact that you couldn’t even deliver satire because you tried so hard to give crappy arguments. Given that you mention that you never heard a Beatles album, at least you could’ve tried to compare it to bands or artist that you think are better, and maybe I would’ve agreed with you, but you didn’t. You also never thoroughly Analyzed any of their songs.

John Lennon was wrong if he said “without Elvis, there is no Beatles” I disagree..if there is no Buddy Holly, there is no Beatles. Everything from their look (skinny ties w suits or lettermen jackets), their sound, their writing style..EVERYTHING was ripped off from Buddy Holly...hell, even "The Beatles" was ripped off of "The Crickets" Paul even admitted that over 40 Beatles songs were written using Holly’s song writing style. The biggest one I can think of is..Tell Me What You See..that's totally a Holly blueprint. Had Buddy lived past ‘59...he would’ve been the King..
