For years i always thought it was John who said sod but now i have heard it again it was George, John even looks at him laughing. Long live Doddy.

Sir Ken dodd was a local and national scouse treasure, I remember his funeral car going past! Rip Sir Kenneth Dodd ❤
@EricIrl13 жыл бұрын
The interview was done at Granada TV's studios in Manchester. The interviewer is Dublin man Gay Byrne who in those days commuted between Dublin and Manchester to host radio and TV shows in Ireland and the UK. In the mid 1960s he gave up hs British career to concentrate on working in Irish TV and radio - becoming a bit of a legend in his home country.

They said it many times that those real early days of Beatlemania when they were just making it big in England were their best times and you can see it from their clips during this time that they really were enjoying themselves.

Well most of the comments are old but I’ll still say it anyway; it wasn’t John, it was George who said ‘Sod’ at the end

Notice George's sense of humour lasts about 5 seconds as ken starts ripping into him...see George's fake smile as he hates having the piss ripped out of him..."have you finished" ? He says to ken as he feels he is being teased for at least 5 seconds....

Hi Rachael. Hard to make out first word (as I am a northerner but not Scouse). I think John said "grass" then leading to "sod" as that punchline (which of course is a section of grass-covered surface soil held together by matted roots, hence the 'earthy' name "Sod" for Ken Dodd as a quick witted pun from John there). Typical Scouser thing of looking for a joke in everything. I love visiting Liverpool and I'm going there again to the massive Beatles convention next week. xx

You might be right. My audio wasn't so clear, and so listened again. Because the wide shot then cuts to John I thought it was him at first. John and George's voices do often sound similar, though each of the boys of course have distinct intonations. If so, it was a good comeback for George from the "thingy" comment. I looked up Mr. Dodd online and he's still alive and appearing in comedy shows, so I guess that was his act, and as a fellow Liverpudlian must got along well with them.

i think they had good wit and not arrogant like most popstars nowadays. Always took the pee out of themselves. I particularly like the film when they arrive in America for the first time and are interviewed at JFK airport. When asked if they are nothing but of a bunch of english elvis presleys, ringos answer is ace. It must have been such a laugh 4 mates conquering the world and still being in your 20s.

I liked him when I was a kid but I didn't get how brilliant he was. What a sharp wit he had, and he almost walked all over the Beatles except when John suggested the name "Sod" when he was asking for an "earthy" name. I guess this was done in Ireland judging from the interviewer's accent. I am also guessing that Ken Dodd probably scripted the whole thing including that suggestion from Lennon. BTW he also had a really good singing voice.
