I was in an old school Taekwondo academy with roots in chang moo Kwan. Our belt rank system also had to do with farming, white was purity or soil, yellow was a seed, green was sprouting, blue was water, red was sunlight or fire, and black belt was the first harvest. This is really cool to still be teaching the traditional values behind martial arts, keep it up

That's really cool to hear. I'm not surprised since many of the Kwans who emerged after WWII seemed to share a lot of ideas

When I did tang soo do as a kid my school was in the world moo duk kwan tsd federation and our belts were white, yellow, purple, orange, blue, green, red, black. Now, I'm in a different school in the world tang soo do association and my schools belts are White, orange, advanced orange (half orange, half green), green, advanced green (half green, half brown), brown, advanced brown (half brown/red), red, advanced red (half red/dark blue), Dark blue (called cho dan bo) and black. It is interesting to see that different federations/associations/schools have slightly different belts. I also learned forms and weapons can be different. I still remember forms 1-7 but at my current school they are a little different but the adjustment has been easy.

Hello! Yes, many schools use all sorts of different colors and ranking systems. In this video, we were just focusing on the original 4 colors used by Hwang Kee. Now a days though, you'll find all different systems.

@@TrinityMartialArtsNY Thank you for the video. I thought it was interesting that it started with just 4 original colors and has branched off in so many ways. Schools use camoflauge belts, and half colored belts even and they all have their own order. Super interesting.

Which Tang Soo Do Association are you a part of? I know the World TSD Association uses a different belt system. When I first started training in TKD (in the Jhoon Rhee system) our forms were very similar to those used in TSD. Eventually we shifted to the Chong Hon forms and there was some distancing - but we never adopted the sein-wave theory used in many ITF schools today. If my grandchildren got interested in martial Arts today, I would encourage them to study TSD or find a traditional TKD school. Thanks for the video.

My current school is White, orange, advanced orange (half orange, half green), green, advanced green (half green, half brown), brown, advanced brown (half brown/red), red, advanced red (half red/dark blue), Dark blue (called cho dan bo) and black.

I used to train for a few years in a related art, Kong Sudo (also spelt Kong Soo Do). It's a given that have a similar belt structure, however he represent all gup grades with a separate belt. For us, it goes as follows: White Yellow Orange Purple Purple Stripe Green Green Stripe Brown Brown Stripe Red Red Stripe Cho Dan Bo (aka Black Stripe) All (except one) "stripe" belt have white running down the middle for its stripe. This is to show an incremental progression between each belt, although all belts of the same colour are basically treated the same. They're like "[colour] first class" belts. The last "stripe" belt is Cho Dan Bo. This is the same as Red Stripe (red belt + white stripe), except with pure black as the stripe running down the belt. Traditionally, I believe this belt is treated like a "black-belt-in-training" according to the Wikipedia. The black belts are the same, being that they're midnight blue in colour, not pure black, and have the name and sometimes logo of the art embroidered into one end of the belt. Dans 1-3 are shown by a gold-coloured strip across the (left?) end of the belt - one signifying each Dan that has been achieved. To memory, 4th-7th Dan generally have the same design and colours as yours, except those that are instructors appear to have a broader belt with a broader red stripe down the middle. I believe now, the Dan strips are in white. I don't know 8th Dan and above, as I've never met nor seen one from my art, though I'd expect they follow a similar pattern as instructor Dans 4-7.

Did you train IN Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan or were you a member of THE Moo Duk Kwan (Which was renamed to Soo Bahk Do). The belts discussed in this video were used by Hwang Kee and the MDK association. Other TSD schools all over the world use different colors.

The original colors used by GM Hwang Kee were white, green, red, and black (or sometimes midnight blue), with orange added in later. While many schools now use blue after red to insert a rank before black belt, it was not part of Hwang Kee's original belt system, hence why it was not mentioned in this video.

Sa Bom Nihm taught that belt color didn't mean much... Knowledge, ability, understanding speak louder and more clearly. SBM taught that color belts were developed from Japanese Martial arts - Particularly Judo as codified by Kano.

The value of the red belt in various Korean martial arts isn’t high. Unlike some Japanese / Okinawan martial arts where it is the highest rank.
