2:32 How to do intermittent hypoxic training
In this video, we’re going to talk about intermittent hypoxic training (IHT).
What is intermittent hypoxic training?
Intermittent hypoxic training is a training or therapy, very similar to training in high altitudes. You’re intermittently giving your body lower amounts of oxygen. If you cut down the oxygen too low for too long, it could be dangerous.
By giving your body little doses of hypoxia, which is a lack of oxygen, you can create an amazing adaptation. You’re giving a small amount of stress intermittently to cause the body to rebound, adapt, and become even stronger.
Intermittent hypoxic training benefits:
1. Improved performance
2. May help with chronic lung disease
3. May help with bronchial asthma
4. May help with hypertension
5. May help with diabetes
6. May help with brain damage
7. May help with radiation toxicity
8. Increases your antioxidant network
9. Increases the number of mitochondria
10. May increase the number and size of red blood cells
11. Helps release excessive amounts of calcium from the cell
12. Increases oxygen to the tissues
13. Decreases oxidative stress
How to do intermittent hypoxic training:
• You can get intermittent hypoxic training equipment such as a small mask that fits over your nose and mouth. The mask restricts air and has different settings that will simulate different altitudes. You may start at 3,000 ft and slowly work your way up to 19,000 ft.
• There is another way where you’re on a bicycle, and you’re breathing in a less amount of oxygen and more nitrogen.
• One pattern might look like 3-5 minutes of hypoxic air, where you’re breathing more CO2. Then, 2-5 minutes of ambient air (normal air). You do this back and forth for about 45 minutes.
• You can get a pulse oximeter, which will measure the amount of oxygen in your blood.

This is blowing my mind. As a child I hung out daily at the local Swim Club, when my friends weren't around I would practice swimming underwater. At the time my goal was to mess with the lifeguards, in the end I was able to swim underwater more than a 100 m fairly easily. Later when I entered organized sports my endurance was unmatched which I attributed to my cycling, after hearing this I think it might have been the swimming underwater.

I did this years ago when in was 70lbs over weight. Helped with breathing regulation and patterns while running. Increased endurance too. Highly recommend to do. ONLY during cardio sessions. NEVER weight train with the mask on. When you do take the mask off after the first 5 minutes, your lungs feel like gold.

Any anaerobic physical training already checks most of the things on your list, so you will get similar adaptations without a mask. Hypoxic training is for competitive athletes looking for every legal edge they can get to win, and you must do it routinely to maintain any additional benefits it may give you. The average physically active person who is not competing in sports doesn't stand to benefit that much from it which is why it's a meme workout for most.

Key word: For most. Some of us here don’t want to be normal. We want to be healthy. There’s a difference. As healthy as our bodies can allow us to be. Brain and brawn. Doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive.

these things don’t necessarily do anything but strengthen intercostal muscles, you already use such a small percentage of the oxygen you breath in and wearing a mask won’t change that.

Yes but my husband had a stroke 12 years ago and so cannot run or do anaerobic activity. He has low energy, chronic pain up and down the right side ( tissues appear to get poor blood flow) he has low hemoglobin - outside the normal range. Something like this could help. Rather than more DRUGS! I am thinking maybe just walking for 2 minutes with this mask then not - like HIIT. Oh I wish I had a Dr that was not handcuffed by the system here in Alberta Canada.

There we go! It's so simple to just start breathing through your nose day and night, and do reduced breathing exercises. And if you're already doing meditation, which one should, then it's a very synergistic exercise for temporary and long-term benefits. So it should definitely be more well-known, considering how very simple the concept and practice is.

I'd be careful about this training as it increases the number of RBC. It can get to an unhealthy level and cause the blood to become too viscous. I would suggest that folks check their hemoglobin / hematocrit prior to embarking on this type of training.

@@bahe1969 First and foremost I am not a Dr you should always check with them first. That being said; in my opinion it would make sense to try it out under Dr supervision. I would recommend that you use a heart rate belt and a pulseOx when you are training. You don't want to risk passing out because of low O2 levels. The heart rate monitor is to keep you in a zone so you don't push it to far.

After watching this video I made my own research on this mask, it turns out that this mask doesn't really simulates altitude climate. Rather that it actually reduces the amount of the intake air. While in an altitude environment you can actually have a full lungs breath but this air contains less oxygen. This procedure do benefits the red blood cells while mask as far as I found doesn't simulates such environment. The mask has benefits to your respiratory system but not as represented in this video

Dr. Berg, training mask DOES NOT create the effect of altitude. The air in the mountains is thinner than in regular conditions. And through the mask you inhale the same regular air - you just have to work your inspiratory muscles harder to get it. That’s why the first version of this tool was called “Altitude mask” and then they changed to just “Training mask”. So it obviously creates some effect on your body but you can’t compare it to the altitude training. By the way I’m a competitive swimmer and I absolutely agree that breath control during exercise is very beneficial to your overall level of fitness.

Dr Berg I’m sure this will pop up by other posters but the hypoxic condition and the hormesis it creates is central to the Wim Hof breathing method. Short cycles of rapid intake of oxygen, then after exhaling, not breathing for as long as possible (up to 3 minutes) wherein oxygen is depleted (hypoxia). It’s not comfortable but gets more comfortable with practice. Has roots in yoga traditions. Is also part of training for free drivers. Keep your cutting edge stuff coming! 😊👍

Sorry for the late comment, but the Problem with these Masks is: The Oxygen and CO2 percentage in the Air does not change but the resistance to breathe does. Your body judges how much to breathe with the CO2 content of the blood (afaik it does not really know the oxygen saturation, but they have an inverse relationship). So what will happen is that you will subconsciously increase the amount and/or depth of breaths you take, resulting in the same exchange of co2 and o2 as before. One has to control with willpower to mindfully breathe so the feeling of "not having breathed" enough stays for extended periods of time. This actually keeps co2 levels in the Blood higher than normal, causing you not to take up as much oxygen but also release more oxygen from the red blood cells. This will force your body to adapt in the ways described in the video.

I've wanted to try that for a while now. It'd be nice to LHTL (Live High Train Low). Huge performance differences there. Merry Christmas Eric.

There is blood disease called sickle cell anemia triggered by hypoxia which could lead to strock because thier RBC shape will change to sickle shape and stick together and to the endothelial walls of vessels. So this technique is contraindicated to these patients

Good morning Doc. First, love your informational videos! Big fan. I have used the "elevation" mask in past training and will occasionally still utilize one to simulate my working environment (gas mask). But, my understanding is the elevation mask simply forces your respiratory system to work harder to take a breathe. You're not actually decreasing the O2 ratio of the breathe you're taking, just making it more difficult to take the breathe. So for my training purposes, I utilize to simulate the stress of having to perform task while operating a breathing apparatus. Thoughts on ratio of oxygen vs. difficulty of breathe?

doing intermittent hypoxia to training and at same time oxygen concentrator(not hbot) through nose. is it gonna help total oxygen consumption to brain/cells?

When you say "fasting isn't good for 2 years" you mean fasting straight for two years, right? Not "doing one meal a day for two years is bad." Because that's what I've been doing.

Just a question : the little black mask you showed, there are studies saying they are good to improve Maximal oxygen uptake but that they don’t reproduce altitude conditions… What do you think about it ?

Hi Dr. Berg. I am a big fan and have been a loyal follower/customer of your supplements, Keto and IF plan as well as general healthy lifestyle advice from your videos and content for the past year. I am a 24 year old female who is currently training to be an international flight attendant, and am wondering if you can create a video with tips on how to stay as healthy as possible in this career path (i.e. addressing topics like disrupted circadian rhythm due to shift work, maintaining energy during long-haul flights in a healthy way, repeated exposure to hypoxia and radiation, when to eat while awake, what supplements to take, etc.) . My contract is three years, and many fly for a maximum of 6-7 years due to the taxing effects on the body. Any info would be much appreciated as I also share your passion and priority of living a healthy lifestyle! Thank you!!

Dr Berg, could you do a follow up on dangers, regular protocols, etc? You can see from the comments, there’s a lot of confusion. Including people who are saying it’s like sleep apnea and that must be good for you. lol

The black you showed is does not help or simulate higher altitude. Haypoxy happends due to less oxygen and not less air. The black mask only reduces the air.

Ehhhh... this mask does NOT simulated altitude training, or hypoxia. This mask simulates suffocation, or asphyxia. The VOLUME of air is restricted, but the percentage of available oxygen is normal. To achieve hypoxia, the concentration or percentage of available oxygen has to be reduced. True altitude, or low pressure, training doesn't affect the volume of air you breathe, but there is a measurable lowered concentration of oxygen available.

Can you please clarify! I did some digging and now understand that a hypoxic training mask will not provide the molecular benefits that you describe, as the percent of O2 we breath in using the mask is the same as without it, unlike training at altitude. The benefits as I understand it is that it will help build lungs and diaphragm muscles, but not have an effect on the red blood cells that you suggest. Please help me cut through and understand the benefits if any of such a process. Thank you.
