Hey look, it's time for another Beretta review! The Beretta Cheetahs, (aka the 80-series) are some of the classiest pistols ever made with the side benefit of being built to last like their big brother, the 92. You might be familiar with the .380 ACP Beretta Model 84 Cheetah, or maybe even the Model 85 or Model 81 (my personal favorite, in .32 ACP). But today, we're going to talk a little bit about all eight (yeah, eight!) models in the Cheetah series and what makes them so great to shoot, own, and even carry.

@RabbiTosmiser I've handled but not shot the 80X. The sights really aren't much bigger than the original 81-series guns. They can be drifted to improve POA/POI a bit, no more. The rail seems to add a muzzle heaviness I don't particularly like. I'm not fond of the aesthics either. IMO, a solid gun but not worth the ~$300-400 over a clean, surplus Model 84.

I’ve had mine for about a month. I had to fire a bunch of pistols; and honestly none fit in my hands well, or I just didn’t like the feel. Until I stumbled along the F series 84 FS. Really like all the features and the assurance of having a duty style pistol. Plus it’s just a blast to shoot.

I also own a Beretta 84FS with a nickel slide and frame in pristine (like new) condition with 3 nickel 13+1 round mags. It shoots like a dream and is accurate. I do like the look of the new Beretta 80x Cheetah Bronze with the 13+1 mag though, but would be reluctant to sell my 84FS in order to buy it. The one issue I'd love to find a solution for in my 84FS is the difficult-to-rack slide that is endemic to the 84FS. I know the reason for this is the blowback design. Has anyone come up with a fix?

Great video, as always. I discovered the Cheetah, believe it or not on an old episode of Miami Vice. Tubbs secretly stored in his under his car and told a bad guy to quote "GET, bang, OUT, bang, OF, bang, MY CAR, BANG!" When I was old enough I searched for the pistol in pond shops and gun shows. In almost every instance they were in .32 acp or in very bad condition. That being said just about everyone that I shot with, told me to forget the Cheetah and go with a 'same-size' 9mm option. For both concealed carry and home defense. Well, flash forward a decade or two and suddenly the Cheetah has become the bee's knees. With more and more videos regarding pistols chambered for .380 (namely by you) I've seen an upswing in their interest. That being said the Cheetah has made a resurgence. Rightfully so. Now if we could only get the .45 Super, .44 Special, 41 Magnum, and the Taurus PT-92AF back into the same light. Oh well...

Browning BDA is a more attractive (IMHO) clone of the Beretta 84, made by Beretta under contract. Is a decocker DA/SA; mine has never failed to feed any ammo, FMJ or hollow point, no malfunctions of any sort, excellent accuracy. As LG says, classy old school craftmanship that's rare today. Greg Ellifritz' comprehensive review of cartridge effectiveness in real-world shootings showed little difference among 380 acp, 38 spcl, 9 mm and 40 s&w. So, 14 380 acp rounds is likely sufficient.

I've had a Beretta 84 FS for a few years. It's the nickel version, and it came with 2, 10-round mags. I confirmed the 13 round mags were compatible and bought a couple. It's a beautiful gun and shoots well, but initially, I could NOT get it reassembled without a lot of cursing and effort, and even then I didn't know what I'd done. Thanks to a KZbinr, I discovered after putting the slide back on and locking it back, all that I had to do was press the barrel inward. Then the take-down lever went smoothly back in place. Even a chat with Beretta's tech couldn't tell me that. Like Chris, I enjoy the lower caliber arms - would love to have this in .32 acp. Safe shooting all!

My only .380 was a PPK that I bought new back in the eighties and still owned. In 2020 prices had inflated and were peaking when I found a dealer with six 85BB's for $350 each at a show. I checked the prices of the .380 ammo and decided to pass and I left the show. A couple hours later I got to thinking exorbitant ammo prices had to be only temporary so I went back to the show and bought the nicest one which looked brand new. I am very pleased with it. It looks and shoots like a mini version of my 92FS and the ammo price has gone down quite a bit.

Loved the video man. I just got my 84 BB from PSA. For 299 beans. It is in 10/10 shape and even has new springs and didn’t even need to be cleaned! I love this pistol man. My favorite pistol before now was my 92fs m9. But the small little cute carry size that the 84 is has now won my heart! Will be carrying this over top of my Springfield hellcat which I REALLY LOVE too but the cheetah is just AMAZING!

I’ve got one in .32 (surplus) and a .380 I bought new, both double stack. They are beautiful and fun. I’d like a nickel single stack .380 and a .22 cheetah but they are both pretty pricey (especially the .22 version). Great review. Enjoy your channel. Your website is great. I’ve ordered before and got a nice note from you inside. Very good prices. Keep up the good work as a small business owner.

A friend has one in .380. It definitely has more felt recoil than my 1911-380. I have a .32 auto and all of my kids can shoot it. It is one of the surplus guns but it has been flawless so far.

Honestly, no idea why I am even mentioning this, let alone on this video on this channel (probably just because I am a teeny bit drunk), but I consider myself a fairly liberal person. Despite that, I am a FIRM believer in the 2nd Amendment, and I strongly believe in the peoples' right to own firearms, both for personal protection, and because they are just awesome and super fun. Lucky Gunner goes a LONG way towards educating people on responsible gun ownership, and I feel they they are a perfect example of why and how the average person should own and operate a firearm (amongst other great and amazing channels like Military Arms Channel, The Honest Outlaw, Hicock45, Colion Noir, Active Self Protection, etc.). Channels like this do such an amazing job of educating everyone on why gun ownership is so important, and how to be a responsible gun owner, and to top it off they give such great advice on specific firearms and firearm manufacturers. I served in the US Army, and I honestly had a pretty poor opinion of the Beretta M9 (and 92 series) due to my experience with the firearm while in the service, however, after viewing channels like this one and others previously mentioned, I have definitely changed my opinion and attributed my personal experience to both my own anatomy (I have crazy small hands for a male, like, embarrassingly small hands) and just the overused and under-maintained nature of the pistols. Further, I learn so much about firearms that I ever knew existed, and I appreciate the knowledge being shared more than I can describe right now. I had no idea this line of pistols existed, and based on my own personal preferences (small size, effective caliber, double/single action hammer-fired) this seems like an ideal firearm for me and something I need to look into ASAP. So in short, thank you Lucky Gunner and channels like this one for both educating me and showcasing why responsibly owning and operating a firearm is both an important, inalienable right, and a healthy and fun activity that can be enjoyed by literally anyone. You do so much more for gun owners' rights than you probably even realize.

I've watched a dozen or so of your pistol reviews over the years. Your thoroughness on the Cheetah review is superb and leads me to remain Subscribed! PS - Your pointing out that blow backs are harder to rack is true and "sold me". I've 2 "Maks" one for my wife. She has a tough time racking the slide and I've been checking reviews to find her something that she can easily rack. I've about narrowed it down to the Taurus G3-C or the S&W MP Shield both in 9mm

Picked up a used Cheetah 87 in 22lr in 98% like-new condition. Only defect was a chip in one of the checkered wood grip panels. Ordered some genuine Beretta wood replacements and it is now 100%. Slight overtravel on the trigger action limited accuracy, but a small glued on trigger stop solved that. A real beauty and very accurate now.

I worked at a range in the mid 90s. We had an 84B or BB on the rental line. We even had a couple of 20rd aftermarket mags for it. That gun was so much fun to shoot. But I moved on from that job and had almost forgotten about it. Last summer I stumbled upon an 85FS. I was surprised that it had a decocker. Then I started doing some research and found out the history and the changes. I decided I wanted an 84F or FS. After a few weeks of gunbroker shopping I found the right one, an 84F. Surprisingly there are tons of them on GB. I was happy to discover too that new mags are still available from Beretta. I, like you, prefer a DA/SA trigger. So this gun does see some carry, although my P365XL gets carried most of the time. BTW, The other double stack .380 is the Bersa Thunder Plus.

Do you remember the adds in the hunting magazines that said the 84 was a grate outdoor and backup handgun to take hunting? Light weight high capacity grate for finishing shots on big game and a good snake and small game gun for camp meat? The add actually sold a few to hunting club members I know back in the early 80's. I wanted one but I had to make do with my single 6.

Great video as always, Chris! I've had experience with several 81 Berettas that were Italian police surplus pieces at $200 or a bit higher. Not a bad one in the group. Beautiful little pistols with minimal wear. Magazines were an issue. I contacted MecGar and they had one distributor in the US who was carefully pinching down the top opening of Model 84 .380 mags. They worked splendidly.

I have owned an 85F for more then 30 years. It's as outstandingly reliable as it is aesthetically beautiful. An often rare combination in our polymer days. You can easily cure your magazine safety disconnect blues with a screwdriver and 5 minutes of your time. Replace it likewise if you change your mind. The decocker drops the hammer to a half cock position, safety on, significantly reducing the trigger pull resistance on the first double action shot. It has a chromium lined barrel that will most likely outlive you as well. This pistol is more in line with a Rolex...never obsolete!

My first gun (agency assigned in LATAM) was a BDA. Love the thing. Retired two years ago and I’m buying a 84F I found a good price as my EDC. Stoked. Only diff is the safety de cocker in the BDA actually works complete opposite (down to decock, up to fire as opposed to the 84 down to fire up to decock). Have to retrain my brain. Nonetheless, super stoked.
