TIALTNGO is absolutely era defining. Jangle Pop was a massive genre of the 80s and that song is arguably the quintessential jangle pop song

I wasn't alive during the 80s but I listen to a lot of music. King of Pain by The Police is my favorite 80s song, one of my favorite songs period, incredible track.

I’m honestly surprised there was nothing from Queen or GNR, though if we’re still taking about iconic rock songs then I’d definitely include Master of Puppets, Back In Black, Crazy Train, Jump, Peace Sells, Once In A Lifetime, Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)/Comfortably Numb, Personal Jesus, Where the Streets Have No Name, Raining Blood or even Land of Confusion

@@RichardRichardman I'm aware of that, they just released Brick 2 and Comfortably Numb as singles in 1980 and plus the entire Wall tour spanned from 1980-81 so it's still considered part of '80s music

They are still less influential than Depeche Mode. They are considered one.of, if not the greatest British electronic group of all time. They completely changed the way electronic and alternative music sound and were a huge influence on a ton of artists from Shakira to Rammstein to Linkin Park.

Did anyone actually like Like a Prayer, I just remember MTV couldn't get enough of the slut-in-church video. Never met anyone who likes that song. Wouldn't Material Girl be more 80s? Or just use Cyndi Lauper instead. Running Up That Hill got more popular from Stranger Things than it was in the 80s. I hate Rolling Stone don't know why I'm replying.

It's a list of the best songs of the 80s, not one of the most "era defining", whatever that means, and if you think any of these songs is better than There Is A Light, fuck you + How Soon Is Now should be top 5 at least.

So, no Bruce Springsteen, no GNR, like No Glam Metal at all. Prince over MJ? Delusional. Anything from Purple Rain should be here, but over MJ? No. Nothing from American Alt Rock Underground which is big part of college radio back then. Rolling Stone suck. Also, how DD and The Smiths are not defining?

I get that it’s influential but 80s rap is so unbelievably lame and outdated, even public enemy. I can’t believe we’re still talking about it in 2023. Everything about it has aged badly. I don’t think public enemy or the furious five deserve to be in a top 10 list of 80s songs. If I heard someone listening to public enemy in 2023 I’d probably laugh in their face. It’s grandpa music
