This is a good example of why I hate being the demonstration guy in class. And there’s always some joker that says “show me that again!”

Very nice! I'm just dipping my toe into the no-gi game, so my attacks are sorely lacking. Hope to catch someone with this one soon!

🤣🤣 Most people tap long before you're crushing the S out of their windpipe. Once you show the paper cutter and they know they can't turn their head, they'll tap. Source: Been doing this BS for many years, and people seem to like me in general.

Someone help! my black belt Juijistu coach said that the super chill position and scarf hold position suck and that I should stick with traditional side control. as a one strip white belt those positions have been my favorite to submit from but I am wondering if they are not considered as good at higher levels. thoughts???

shows your coach has very limited understanding…dont tell him that, but it does

Just my opinion, maybe he is trying to get you to learn & understand that basic position for now. Maybe he will encourage you to explore variations of the side control in the future? Maybe? Trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Keep in mind, no one knows everything and we all get different experiences and levels of knowledge and understanding. Keep an open mind to learn from various Grappling styles, not just Brazilian jiu-jitsu. There are different forms like judo, Sambo, catch wrestling, etc. What works for one person may not work for another, have vice versa. We all have different body types and sizes and you have to find techniques that work for you. I personally try to learn various techniques from different instructors on KZbin who have proven techniques. JJ Machado, Henry Akins, Danaher, Chewjitsu, Marcelo Garcia, etc. I usually make a playlist for each position (mount top, mount bottom, closed guard, inside closed guard, etc) as I explore and find new techniques, theories, concepts, etc, I add them to the specific playlist to study. Keep an open mind to learn from different sources, it truly is an endless journey. Just enjoy the journey and learn from everyone, even other white belts. I hope this help answer your question. I personally don’t like the traditional side control, cause I still have to open up and let go of the head to attack. I typically like to staple one arm and attack the far side, very similar to ones shown in the Henry Akin video. Here is a variation from an old coach and mentor of mine that I recorded last year. I hope this can help you think beyond the traditional side control. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6Sno2OnbJaIps0si=qzoHE6YvljxmVIlv

Scarf hold is not used a lot at high levels because it is difficult to get to when the opponent is good at scrambling, and other options are higher percentage. That doesn't mean it doesn't work once you get there. Case in point would be Josh Barnett vs Dean Lister. Dean hadn't tapped in competition in forever, but tapped to pressure from Josh's scarf hold. Maybe your coach was just being hyperbolic.

your professors concern has merits. as a judoka who loves that technique, I had to adjust it a little for jujitsu. Henry akins video really help me a lot. it's really satisfying when you get that tap just doing compression. 😊

Is the papercutter just windpipe pressure? I feel like all my training partners will think I'm cranking the neck or just applying pressure for no reason. Is it actually a clean choke?
@captmoroni
@captmoroni 3 ай бұрын
It's not a crank. And it's not a blood choke (strangle). It's the same pressure as a guillotine. People complain because it's so simple that it looks like you're just "using muscle." However the technique is in the setup. You see how the defense is just turning your head to the side.
