I just started puffin a pipe on Christmas. My wife knew I was pipe curious. She went to my corner smoke shop and found a 12 dollar briar.......a real tiny one! She has since bought me a beautiful blue Savinelli. I love it, but I still think my little starter is my fave!! Thanks!!

I agree 100% this is why i refuse to go pass 150 on a pipe and even at that point, for the most part, its more of a visual thing as opposed to functionality. Ive smoked pipes that have been 300+ and they are no diff than my 150 and below pipes.

Agree with you as far as stanwell and savenilli. Have one stanwell with an army mount good smoker. Briar blues got me addicted to savenilli. Thanks Mike, you budget wrecker. But do disagree with you about Petersen. Slowly increasing their presence in my collection. Especially those with the p lip stems. I have found a noticeable improvement in the taste of tobacco blends in my p lip. For example orrik golden slice. Heard raves about it, tried it in my savenilli, was ok but nothing special. In my p lip Petersen, I can taste the more subtle flavor notes and went nuts over the blend. Besides any pipe company that has a line of pipes named after Sherlock Holmes, I gotta love. It's elementary! Yep have to go there. Why Don't you recommend estate pipes for those who want more bang for the buck?
@ThePipeNook
@ThePipeNook 5 жыл бұрын
I'll have to give Peterson's another shot in the near future. It very well could be that I just had bad luck in finding one that suited me. This video is a few years old, I believe...I didn't do much in the way of estate pipes back then, so just didn't think to recommend it at the time. But yes, if you aren't averse to cleaning /restoring a used pipe, you can find some great deals out there!

@@ThePipeNook most of my pipes are estates. I just can't afford new. Unless there is a sale. Plus when I buy an estate from a company it comes cleaned. Don't care about bite marks or dings. Gonna put some on myself. What I can't understand is those unsmoked estate pipes. To me, a new pipe is like a new gun, not happy untill I've used it. If you bought it, use it. Paid $9 tax and all at a little brick and mortar about 10-15 miles from my home (rural areas, haha!) for a little filtered Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipe. I believe it's a Washington, as it says so on the bottom. Has the little medico filters and I smoked a few bowls of captain black royal in it. Smoked the heck out of it and am abusing it already, all in one day. Good little toss around every day work pipe for sure. Looking for a chocolate-y every day smoke that I can enjoy, something light on the pallet, smooth, maybe even dark chocolate. But I don't want to spend too much. Maybe Carter Hall? Heard it's got a light cocoa and rum topping, but am not sure what to do. Any suggestions for such a tobacco?
@ThePipeNook
@ThePipeNook 6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm...I don't actually have much experience with chocolate flavored tobaccos. Wish I could help more, but the only suggestions I have that I carry would be (as you mentioned) Carter Hall, which has a bit of a cocoa taste, and Savinelli's Black Cavendish, which supposedly is chocolate AND vanilla flavored, which to me kind of cancels one another out...but all in all a nice sweet smoke. There are plenty of chocolate flavored blends out there, I just don't have much experience with them.

Thanks for sharing and for your advice. I'm new for pipes, I got a traditional Indonesian pipes for $10, the chamber made from indonesian rosewood wood and the stem made from Buffalo horn without varnish paint for finishing, so i think it's an organic pipes (without plastic or acrilic part). And they said i can use black coffee for cleaning the pipes. It is good enough for pipes quality?
@ThePipeNook
@ThePipeNook 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Heny! If you're asking if those pipes you own are "good enough," I really can't say. I don't have a Rosewood pipe, but I do have pipes made of corn cobs, cherry wood, pear wood, maple wood, olive wood, and others. I don't believe pipes have to be made of Briar to be good pipes...although I do think they are some of the best and most durable. I'd say if it smokes well, it's good enough! :)

What is your opinion on joyoldelf pipes?
@ThePipeNook
@ThePipeNook 5 жыл бұрын
I'd never heard of Joyoldelf pipes until you asked about them, but in looking them over online, they appear to be Chinese made pipes, mostly made of pear wood. I'd say if you're going to buy a pipe in this price range, go for a Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipe. It may not look as nice, but I imagine it will smoke better. And the manufacturing process is less questionable than Chinese manufacture. If you want a pear wood pipe, I'd purchase a Mr. Brog, made in Poland, over the Joyoldelf.

@ThePipeNook
@ThePipeNook 6 жыл бұрын
That's a tough call. I'd say if you're only buying one pipe, I'd get the Savinelli first. But if you buy other pipes in the future, OMS pipes are very nice. I just recently purchased my very first OMS pipe, a bent dublin, from Salam himself, and I love it! I personally prefer filtered pipes, but my OMS is one of the best smoking non-filtered pipes I've ever owned. I hope that helps!

What is your opinion on Dr. Grabow pipes? Types of wood...Ebony, Pear wood, I read a post on Rosewood can give toxic fumes? No idea here...
@ThePipeNook
@ThePipeNook 2 жыл бұрын
Dr. Grabow pipes are solid budget pipes. Are there better pipes? Yes. Are there better pipes for $30 to $35? Probably not! In regards to types of wood, I recommend Briar, of course. Beyond that, I can get behind Morta (bog oak) and to a lesser extent, Pearwood, Maple and Cherrywood. I have no idea about rosewood...I've never seen or heard of a pipe made of Rosewood. So I'd say to steer clear, honestly. There is a reason certain woods are predominantly used for pipes, and why Briar is by far the most popular wood for pipe construction. Thanks for watching!

@ThePipeNook
@ThePipeNook 7 жыл бұрын
Well, I've never seen a churchwarden with a metal tenon, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. What you're thinking about (metal on metal) is what they call an "army mount." I currently don't have any army mounts, but I've heard they're pretty durable. Check my site for loads of suggestions of budget oriented pipes--every brand on my site is a personal recommendation, and many of the pipes I carry are $100 or below. :)

What specifically makes a pipe smoke better than another? Keep it simple, I'm new to pipe smoking
@ThePipeNook
@ThePipeNook 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Louis! Well, there are a lot of factors: The age of the briar, the quality of the briar, the length of time and process of drying out the briar before the pipe is even made...these all affect the cost of the briar itself. Then, the design of the pipe, airway drilling, tenon design, stem design, and quality control are key to having a pipe that doesn't whistle or gurgle due to holding moisture, and other factors. Also, the kind of finish plays a role in how much the pipe dissipates or holds in heat. Essays have been written by those more in the know than myself, but you wanted simple, so we'll leave it at that. I only carry pipe brands on my website that I personally smoke and stand behind. Thanks for watching!

50 dollar pipe is still above average id say 10-20 are budget
@ThePipeNook
@ThePipeNook 4 жыл бұрын
Well, considering you can buy pipes in the $200 to $500 range, on up into the thousands, a $50 smoking pipe that looks nice, is crafted well, and smokes well, is hard to come by. This is an old video, so I'd say these days, I'd call a "budget" pipe something that's $75 or less. A good pipe in the $10 to $20 range...unless you're buying Chinese pipes (which I wouldn't recommend), you're looking at a Missouri Meerschaum corn cob. Even Mr. Brog Polish made pipes are around the $20 to $35 range on Amazon.
