The zh/sh/ch/j/q/x sounds are also used in Polish as DŻ/SZ/CZ/DZ/Ć/Ś, respectively. It is therefore really surprising to see that Chinese people usually pronounce Polish words extremely well. It is almost impossible for anybody west of the border to even attempt pronouncing the Polish word for 'hi', let alone other words. Just thought I'd share this unexpected similarity.

4:56 yes! I can definitely hear the difference! It's the prosody, the second time you said "这还不好解释呢", you said it in a more singsong way. In fact, the rhythm reminded me a lot the one of Brazilian Portuguese (my native language). People often say that we speak in a very melodic way, so does the Beijing accent, apparently! ^^

@Happy Well.. being a native speaker doesn't make you automatically an upper advanced level/or wonderful teacher. "Native" is more an identity than a level, there are natives who have better eloquence than others, for example: if you compare a good Chinese Teacher to an another Chinese who isn't educated very well you may notice the huge difference between their Mandarin. This concept should be applied to all other languages, and not only in Mandarin.

Yeh I agree. major in Japanese so, not a tonal language but I have a lot of chinese friends and also pass many chinese majors in the language building of my uni. What XiaomaNYC does is essentially like taking a couple days conversation class. "hi how are you? fine thank you. how much is this? weather is nice today. my name is. im learning X language" etc. he memorizes phrases more than actually speaks a language. Then you rely on the fact its uncommon for white people in the usa to speak X language and record a shocked pikachu face when you spurt out something. To me those videos honestly are kinda cringey, reminds me of when you are a 6 year old trying to show off around someone you want to think you are cool. like "i better say this out loud like its not a big deal but hope they hear me and think im awesome".

Regarding the "u" sound, it sounds like it does in basically all languages besides English. It's not an /u/ at all in English, but more something like the diphthong /ʉw/. Actually, English has none of the basic pure vowel sounds (a, e, i, u, o), so when learning a foreign language they should pay attention to ALL vowels because NONE is familiar to them.

I'm a non native English speaker and I still struggle with the vowel sounds! I think they're the hardest thing in English, easily. It's funny how much easier to the ear are languages as diverse as Italian, Russian, Chinese or Japanese, compared to English.

I dont think these consonant beginnings are really difficult. You just have to know how they sound. The tones on the other hand are super difficult. Even if you know how they sound it is very hard to reproduce them when you speak.

That's a super interesting question! I think there's some research on the frequency of syllables in Chinese on Reddit

@@RitaChinese I already have a frequency chart of all Chinese syllables; but I don't think it's split out into tones. Even if it were, it doesn't correlate tone frequency with syllable frequency. I have an intuition the third tone and the -ao final are the most frequent of the four -ao endings. But even if I had a list of which tone is most frequent for each syllable that still isn't a rank ordering of toned syllables by frequency. I don't say it doesn't exist, but if it does my Chinese isn't good enough to find it.

Great video! Have you or do you ever plan on making a video dedicated to sounds that are (not sure what to actually call them) "false friends?" Like the "u" mentioned in this video, and I've seen you mention if with certain initials in other videos. In other words, all the sounds that we take for granted because they sound "close enough" to an untrained ear. Whether it be voiced in one language and unvoiced in the other. Aspirated in one and unaspirated or less aspirated in the other. Or a slide into the vowel like the English "you" vs the Chinese "u" as demonstrated here. So much content out there that focuses on the more "difficult" sounds for the native English speakers. Of course with your j,q,x/zh,ch,sh being among the best! It would be nice to see the same breakdown for all the sounds we tend to pronounce the same as our native tongue despite there being slight nuances between the two. Thanks for the content! Rock on!

Thank you for you suggestion, Keith! Yeah "false friends" as you called (a brilliant name btw) partly are where the non-native accents come from, and they can vary a lot based on which native language - the default sound system that you have to hear and pronounce - you speak. Hard to say which is harder, "false friends" or "new friends" in the target language haha. I've been putting together a pronunciation course and hopefully it'll be launched this year, where I'll walk through all the pronunciation features of every single sound in Chinese! In the meantime, I'll talk about more "false friends" in Chinese to English natives for sure😄

@@RitaChinese thanks for the response Rita! I look foward to that, I imagine we all do. 😂 I know in closer related languages sometimes they call false cognates, "false friends." That relationship doesn't exist too much between Mandarin amd English so maybe our false phonemes can take that role! Hmm you bring up a good point. Initially I think the "new friends" (although enemies may be more accurate 😂😂😂😂😢) Are much harder to hear and pronounce "good enough." And as long as the "false friends" are close enough that they aren't mistaken for a completely different sound...They are probably intelligible and just sound like an accent. For the long term though...Once you do have a solid grasp for those "new friends" they probably are easier to consistently pronounce correctly (relatively speaking.) Like the j,q,x sounds...I will never make them in English so there is nothing to regress the technique except being lazy when speaking, or my tongue not keeping up the pace 😂. Where as the D sound maybe...if that's a false friend, I can learn the Chinese technique...but it will take more focus because I will use that sound in a slighty different way all day in my native language. 😢 Oh well. Accents sound cool anyway! 😂

Dashan's control of his tone and pronunciation is very good. I am quite certain that his interview answers are scripted the way his stage performances are. I once saw him in a video with some of his friends during a meal which I think was around the spring festival. His sentence structures were vastly simpler and he conversed in a way that was more like a typical Chinese learner than a person who speaks fluent Chinese. Don't get me wrong, I think his Chinese is quite excellent, but I think his abilities in everyday conversation are not as good as the things that he is scripted to say. This is quite possibly because he can be helped with the structure and vocabulary in a script. Sorry if this bursts anyone's bubble about Dashan being the model of "perfect" Chinese learning.

Making big emphasis on your 4th tones （电、话、号）to make sure they're super clear and drop really low will make Chinese teachers happy, but it will make your friends feel very tired, listening to you speak. After spending years to speak in a way that made Chinese teachers happy, I had to spend more years letting go of those exaggerated tone pronunciation habits to make my friends happy.

can i ask a question like how do you know the words in chinese like from english to chinese i would have to know all the characters, but when it comes to structuring the sentence, bcz i heard that most time its not how u would say a sentence in english, its structured a bit different. i hope im not confusing, i currently learning the language using hanpath and sometimes duolingo, but some how i feel like i need a friend who is chinese to keep me learning the language and not give up, i watch alot of chinese dramas variety shows etc. i can like pick up on certain words but, most time i don't really understand. If I really blame objective excuses, I would say my Chinese is so bad because I have been living in the US since I was five. It has a pretty heavy Fujian accent, where a lot of the 'r' sounds would be substituted with an 'L'. For example, '肉‘ would often turn into 'lou'. These days though, I would consciously try to minimize that in my day-to-day speaking but if I'm frustrated or excited it inevitably comes out again lol. 如果强调客观理由，我认为我中文菜是因为从小都在美国生活。福建口音挺重的；很多发‘r’的声音经常会变成发‘l’的声音。就像肉会变成‘lou'。 不过这一两年以来在日常里有刻意的注意不过如果着急或兴奋口音有出来了。
