I was a Boy Scout many years ago. A camp out turned bad when the temperature dropped a bunch and we ran back to our tents and tried to stay warm. Our Scoutmaster had a BIG Dutch oven and made a beef stew while we hid and cried. It was one of the best things I had ever eaten. As a bonus he made peach cobbler in the same Dutch Oven for dessert. We went home the next day, well fed and a little chilly.

Cast iron cookware is so important it should be given as graduation gifts for young people. I've had to give up my large heavy duty pan bc of my arthritic hands and wrists so I use a griddle and a small fry pan. I've had mine for more than 40 years!

That little "contraption" is variously known as a folding spider, a folding trivet, etc., Christa. A true "spider" usually refers to either a sheet steel frying pan with legs attached, or the long handled thing that resembles a strainer, which is often used when deep-frying foods.

I started out with just a few pieces of cast iron when I was married and now I have well over 40 pieces which includes my dad's pancake griddle, my husband's grandma's #8 Griswold, my aunt's #8 unmarked Lodge. Each piece has a story of either who it belonged to or where it came from. And one day I can pass it on to my kids. This was a great video.

I used to use them to handle feral cats. They did a pretty good job, especially for bites. The teeth just won't go through, the padding absorbs the bite pressure, and the cats hate the taste, so they're not so inclined to bite it twice.

I have lots of cast iron! Yes very valuable, I use it every morning for breakfast. Have the small 1 I use for my hubby's food, he eats wheat products and appreciates food cooked in butter, so I don't get ill from his way of eating. When I do onions I make them in my pan, Wagner, with olive oil, slow and low, covered with a lid for about 1-2 minutes, onions still has crunch. With his eggs in butter hubby doesn't seem to complain. I currently cook on a cast iron 2 burner stove on a metal camp table for charcoal cooking.

I have heard again recently that cast iron cooking is the healthiest for you- it can add needed iron into your body, too, they say. I inherited several cast iron skillets and a dutch oven from my mother and grandmother so I feel blessed. Mom always said "keep them oiled!" They can get rusty.Somewhat like our spiritual lives! Thanks for your vids-always enjoyable and uplifting! (Hope you didn't inhale too much smoke in this one!)

I first learned about cast iron cooking from my sister's mother-in-law. She was an Ozarks farm woman who was the best cook I have ever known. I have skillets from a no. 3 up to a incher, griddle, and dutch oven. Also I have 5 pair of the fire gloves that way I can dedicate a pair to the smoker, grill, cooktop, and oven. Great video and you forgot another great source to get cast iron. Estate sales, once you know what to look for you can go to these and get excellent seasoned cast iron for great prices.

There are other health benefits to using cast iron - it's good for the blood. Rather than polluting the body with residue from non-stick surfaces, you actually contribute minute amounts of iron to your system. This became important for me during an intense time of anaemia. I could not take iron tablets, had a bad reaction. I would not take a blood transfusion, so the doctor said I should use cast iron. They even make great tea pots!!

Thank you mentioning about the tea pots. One can make a very proper cuppa in them. The cast iron definitely got me through a rough patch. The biggest turn came when, at the age of 58(!) I finally found menopause (it had been hiding). Fecundity is a family trait; my grandmother had 13 children on the prairies during the depression; all survived. Wow. There is so much we can do to support our health! One of my favourites is finding kind, gentle people on KZbin. PrepSteaders feeds my positivity with its gentle wisdom.

quick little story: I used cast iron for most everything when my kids were growing up. At age 11, my middle daughter became a vegetarian (and, 24 years later, she still is one, so it wasn't just a passing fancy!). At age 17, when her high school held a blood drive, she was one of only three girls that were allowed to donate, because her iron level was high enough!!! She obviously wasn't getting iron from any meat sources, and she wasn't taking supplements either. So, obviously, it was coming from the iron that leeched into her food from the cast iron cookware! It makes THAT much of a difference!!

Great minds think alike. My mom cooked with cast iron. The original non-stick cookware. I've been picking up old cast iron cookware at country garage and estate sails. Usually for cheap. most need to be reconditioned which I do every so often. My wife won't use it, so I have to store them in the pantry instead of the kitchen. great stuff. great introduction to cast iron. dutch ovens are great for artisan bread. pre-heat first tho.

Good information. I would like to add my wife and I collected a lot of stainless 'state of the art cookware' over the years. But in a bug out or survivalist situation, it wouldn't be quite appealing for use over an open fire, outdoors. Soooo, we decided to invest in cast iron. Bought a lot. Thought we were well prepared for those emergency survivalist situations mandating food preparation outside. Welllll, not exactly. As the saying goes, " There's never a horse that couldn't be rode, and never a man that couldn't be throw'd". We both came to the conclusion that if we had to temporarily or permanently scram our area, on foot even, the bugout bag would be a must, at which point our cast iron and stainless would be either impractical because of weight or not designed with survivalist cooking in mind. We opted for the following pieces as additions to what we had for short term campout situations. A small stainless biomass burner (rocket stove) lightweight and portable enough for containment in a bugout bag. Why carry fuel with you when there is biomass everywhere. Next regular cookware, be it stainless or cast iron, will need oil, rendered fat or ghee for frying, such as eggs, making an omelet or doing stir fry such as when foraging if that becomes necessary. Not only that, cookware must be maintained such as cleaned etc.. If limited water supply is precious, and one has no detergent, cookware cleaning and maintenance could prove challenging. We opted for 1 stainless ceramic lined small skillet/pan, one small stainless ceramic lined sauce pan, and 1 stainless ceramic lined wok. For extreme bug out emergency those do not need oil for cooking and can be wiped out with a damp cloth ready for next use and much lighter than cast iron.. T-Fal aluminum is a toxic no no. Our cast iron is for when things stabilize in a grid down scenario and we return to survival in place mode. We save the regular stainless for gourmet cooking with guests.

My pleasure and grateful for your post. To much junk and high tech crap in the world today. I'm a vegetarian for 48 years and grew up in an Italian family who ate every kind of meat you can think of. My first cast 8-inch iron pan I was told to oil ( cooking oil )and put in a brown paper bag ( never see these bags anymore.) and let sit for a week. This helps the oil get into the pores of the cast iron. Never wash with soap. Yes if you respect the cast iron, it will feed t you for every. I can attest to that. LOL, I do use a steel wok and stainless steel but love my cast iron pots and pans. Cast iron pots for making no meat bake beans. I heat only with wood up here in Canada and my 3 legged 4 quarts cast iron kettle with lid sits on my wood stove baking beans all day. Most of my cast iron can Maine iron cast store, 1974 before I moved to Canada and back to the land living. If you ever get to PEI YOU ARE WELCOMEAND I WILL COOK FOR YOU IN CAST IRON cheers

Love your videos. My Dutch oven is well used, but looks black like it should. It is good to rub Crisco all over the oven inside and out after every time you cook. I have switched to coconut oil on the inside, but can't have too much Crisco on hand for the outside. I keep my cast iron Crisco separate from what I use for baking. Liquid oils go rancid and make the oven smell bad if not used very regularly. It is such a pain to season these things and really much easier to just grease it up after each use.

I love my cast iron and have all the pieces you mentioned except the tools for the Dutch oven. I love the silicone handles you can buy for holding the handles while cooking on a stove and use Ove gloves. But I really liked the fire gloves you showcased and haven't heard of them, so I'll definitely check those out! One thing I don't like though is often when I am using my griddle (on gas stove) it makes my house so smokey the overhead vent doesn't seem to do very good and that's no matter what house I have lived in! I'm not one to cook on high heat either and it will fill the house with a Haze and I can't help but wonder if that somehow isn't good for our health. Otherwise, I've heard it's some of the best to use from a health perspective as well.

Mylightofhope, I know you would probably experience a gross smoke smell initially as the gas burner burns off the oil coating you had on the bottom. It should stop smoking once that is gone. I agree that the smell is kind of toxic as that burn-off happens in the house. I would encourage you to try again, making sure the window is open for a few minutes and the bottom of your griddle is not thickly coated with oil that has to burn off much. (I personally do not have a gas range.)

Correction! Lodge skillets have the very rough cooking surface that needs to be sanded before you season it to make it non-stick! They do not smooth the surface at the Lodge factory to cut down on cost! So if you purchase a Lodge, you need to put some work into it to make it as smooth as Wagner or Griswold old skillets!

I don't think you included the 5th use for the spider thingy with the 4 fold up legs, You could use that inside your dutch oven to rest your tray of biscuits, cakes, pies etc., on so the bottom doesn't burn. My best friend's mother gifted me with her grandmother's cast iron skillet 35 or so years ago. So it is EASILY 100-plus years old. It is also easily one of my most treasured cooking surfaces. Sure, its been re-seasoned a time or so, but for the most part it is maintenance free. Also, I use a small round griddle over my gas stove to set my thermoelectric fan on. Don't know where I'd be without cast iron!

Chris, I use Stainless steel Revere Ware saucepans and such. They are great. Their bottoms warp easier than cast iron if they are abused over heat, but other than that, I love them in the house. For my Get Home Bag, I carry a very light weight Stainless Steel Mess kit. Thanks for the question!

Dolly, the little number 3 pans are probably just right for you, but not the big frying pans as they are pretty heavy. The Number 3's are perfect for personal frying like one giant piece of chicken or a Hamburger or such and they make the perfect small loaf of bread if you bake in them! May God heal your arthritis and bless you today!

Thank you so much, Ryan! Mylightofhope is right. You warm the burners up slowly under the cast iron, and if they have a lot of thick, fresh oil on the bottom you will regret the burn-off process. Try to avoid that. But they will work fine on a smooth glass top stove.

Not only, but also. I've been following various channels for survival, prepper and just general content. That is probably why this channel came up as a suggestion. I follow the channel because I find a lot of the content interesting. But I agree this lady lifts the soul, I am not a Christian but the first time I heard her say "now go and be a blessing to someone else" it made me smile with my heart. We don't need to believe in God, to go and be a blessing. So I thank her for the lovely nature she displays and her reminders to us. Yes she is beautiful but it's the glimpse of her smiling happy kind and gentle nature that just makes you think gosh.

Hi Sis, I appreciate your words of encouragement. Thank you for those! Knowing nothing about you and wanting to encourage you in return I asked the Lord for a verse to share with you. "Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him and if he repents forgive him. Great video. I still use my Revere Ware pans for popping popcorn or boiling my ramen. But for grilled cheese sammies or fried eggs, my little #3 cast is right there. And for steaks or large items, my 10 inch cast pan is ready to go. I have a couple dutch ovens, but just don't use them that much. Being it's just me and the dog, a dutch is pretty big. A gem I used until my oven decided to die is this great cast iron biscuit pan. Thanks for all your work in bringing us these videos, and thank you for the uplifting Scripture reading you always close with. David

jonesey65244 if you have a Dutch oven it can be used as an oven. If your cast iron biscuit pan will fit inside it on a trivet you've got it made. Just keep the heat to med or less on top of stove for it to work. O & it helps to warm the lid up by setting it on different burner till heated through. Set lid with inside part on the burner. Takes a bit of practice but it does work. Been without an oven a few times myself.

Thank God for cast iron, literally. I see your dutch oven is well seasoned inside where it counts, but you can also season the outside as well. I season mine that way every time I use it. Just don't use lard to season it unless you use it everyday or so, lard will go bad over time. As Kent Rollins says if you wouldn't eat it don't put it on your cast iron.
