I've been making and using a simple lye soap for over 60 years and had it used on me for the other 8. Once your lye saponifies you don't have to be concerned at all about the lye any more. In a pinch, if you have ashes and any kind of fat, plus water you can make soap. Add herbs for certain conditions or scents. Add oats or even sand for abrasiveness. I was taught how to do it simply; no thermometers, no ice cubes, just what we had. It isn't fancy, but is easy on even a baby's bottom. That being said I do agree Castile soap is a great alternative.

One use I haven't seen here is to dilute it and wash your fresh vegetables. A good rinse and there are no more chemicals or bugs. Also, I use it to bathe my pets, keeps the fleas away.

I've used the Dr. Bronners for years and swear by it. It was especially useful when I worked on the AT with the Forest Service. The peppermint worked awesome at keeping away mosiqutos, jiggers, and ticks. I'd be out on the trail for 2 weeks at a time normally and a very small amount would go a really long way as well as being echofriendly and the 1 soap that would cover all my clensing needs. It's a fantastic insect repellent as well and while everyone around me would be constantly swatting away pesky biting insects, I was vertually unscathed by there bites and stings. I can barely remember any time that I'd gotten any ticks on me and where I normally patrolled it was abolutly loaded with ticks and black flies they barly bothered me,sure they would buzz around, but they never landed or cralled on or bit me. I've literally used it sense the mid 70's and I can highly highly recommend it to anyone that spends time in the woods or garden.

I have a cabin in NC and that is the only soap I use there. I also have used the peppermint soap, works great at keeping the pesky summer gnats, flies, ticks and other insects away. I make a liquid spray with the peppermint and water and spray around the fire-pit and the screen porch it keeps all the wasps and yellow-jackets away. Works great at washing clothes also, extra peppermint scent to keep bugs away. However, I would like to warn people about 1 place NOT to use the peppermint soap. Do Not use the peppermint soap to wash your private area below! Talk about a shocking experience. LORD Help the person that does this! Just use another scent or unscented down south!

I use it for shampoo, hand soap, and we use the peppermint because it is very invigorating as it tingles and helps prevent headaches. I love it. I do not use it for shampoo though. We have hard water and have not had good success using it as shampoo because the water is bad. But that is not because of the soap. I also like to use Good Soap from Whole Foods. It is not castile soap, but has only 3 or 4 ingredients.

Hi Christa, Thank you so much for sharing the history of Castile soap. Your presentation style is just delightful. How you made me chuckle about the label of Dr. Bonner’s soap. Yes, he is an interesting character!! LOL!! I have used Dr. Bonner’s soap for years. It is an excellent household cleaner when diluted with water. I like to buy the unscented and add my own variety of essential oils...however, I also keep Dr. Bonner’s peppermint Castile soap on hand. It is wonderful to shower with when you have a cold or congestion. Also, you are 100% correct about Castile soap making a great shampoo. My hair feels wonderfully clean when I use it. I buy it in a bar form...I forget the brand name...and keep it in my shower. Also...this is unrelated but something that I also like to do for my hair is once a week do an oil treatment of Castor oil, jojoba oil and few drops of Rosemary essential oil - all mixed together and rubbed into my scalp and down the strands of my hair. Then I cover it with a plastic shower cap and leave on for about 30 minutes...then shampoo. Oh my goodness!! I am 60 but my hair looks like it is 20!! LOL!!! Thank you again for sharing all your wonderful information. Love & God Bless, Mary ❤️😘❤️

Since it is so concentrated, I love to dilute it and use it for hand soap. We have foaming soap dispensers (which have been recycled/reused from store-bought foaming hand soap) at every sink, and I put just a couple Tbs of Castile soap in each dispenser and fill it the rest of the way with water. It’s perfect and gentle for washing hands (I have eczema on my hands and this is literally the only soap I can use). I also use the same foamed Castile soap to wash my dishes! It’s a great way to make the soap stretch further, prevent overuse, and have an effective cleaning product. I plan to use the bars of it the next time I make my homemade laundry detergent. ❤️

I make my own bar soap which can be turned into a liquid with just hot water. We use it for shampoo, body wash and laundry detergent. I haven't used it on dishes yet but that's coming. We call it Bastille soap because it's not made with 100% olive oil and has castor, coconut and sustainable palm. You are right though, this is a very good soap. Blessings!
@solanisomeni
@solanisomeni 6 жыл бұрын
@ Renée Cormalis. Like you, I make my own soap. Among others types of soap, I make both Bastille and Castile soap. Problem with the making of pure Castile soap is that it has to cure for up to a year. Not that it can't be used after 4 - 6 weeks after totally saponifying, (the lye is neutralized and has combined with the fats and transformed into pure soap, leaving no trace of lye) (however, you know that already since you also make soap, I'm just writing this for others that might not know) it's just way to soft and using it to early, is wasteful. Bastille soap on the other hand, will harden up much faster and be ready for use sooner. I don't use the Castile soap for my laundry soap, as I feel it's to much work going into making it when, you can make the "old fashioned" lard/lye soap which works great on laundry and is much cheaper to make. Well, cheaper for me at least, since we have our own farm animals, which I render all the fat from. I'm currently trying to learn how to make my own version of lye using the wood ashes from our heater. Not quite there yet, but getting there... LOL However, as long as I CAN buy lye in the store, that's what I'll be using. Just good to know how to do different things if items aren't available in a store.

folks, I haven't used all the soaps in the world. Thus my experience is limited to only those that are available at my grocers... the few brands I routinely buy, always, without question, leave a film over my body. Some make me feel as if I was plasticized. Other make me reach for the sandpaper. so I tried Kirk's soap bar for the first time. (Kirk's Coco Castile) The experience was excellent.

If you want your store-bought soaps to last longer, look for plants that have saponin them. Yucca is one (root.) I have bought (and NEED to plant) Soapberry. These MUST be from Nepal as the others cause skin irritation in some people. The seeds are hard and take about 3 months to actually sprout but soaking and scoring can aid them to do it a bit quicker. These trees will grow to only about 8' in the US (or so the research tells.) Putting 3 to 5 "berries" into a cotton or mesh bag will do 3 loads of laundry. Boiling them will give you liquid soap that will clean anything. Like I said, do some research on it. Then you will have a never ending supply of FREE soap! GOD BLESS. OH, one more thing. If you happen to have Black Gum trees around, their twigs are EXCELLENT for oral care. My husband's grandfather never owned a toothbrush but seemed to always have that twig in his mouth. LOL He died at old age yet had every tooth in his head and NO CAVITIES EVER!

Castillo soap is my go-to. I grate it and use it as a laundry detergent (the BEST I've ever used. Gets my kids clothes CLEAN). It's only 1 part soap and 3 parts washing soda. I use it to scrub the carpets when the kids make messes, and I use the bar to wash dishes. I have to admit, I find it pretty drying on the skin. I use Savin de Marseilles. But in a pinch I of course I bathe with Castile soap. I tried to use it to brush my teeth- I would not recommend that lol. Another great video!

Good recommendation. I like to use it. Very versatile soap, and healthy. But, 'Castile Soap' was already named as such back in the 16th Century in the lists of Imported Products from Spain. Castilla (Castile) is the region from northern Spain from where this Soap was invented and produced, hence it's name. One of the most popular Spanish imports in all Europe before the Industrial evolution. Great videos. I'm glad I've found your channel. Cheers

Absolutely correct, Christa. Your bug-out vehicle should be a diesel engined one. Bio-diesel is made from combining Sodium (or potassium) hydroxide, Methanol, and vegetable oil. The natural by-product (in addition to diesel fuel) is a substance called "glycerol" which in turn is a natural soap... which you know as "Castille" Hope this helps. Blessings and peace to all.

I've used both Dr. Bronner & Dr. Jacobs liquid soap. They're both pretty good.😊 Now I make my own bar soap, and liquid soap. The sodium & potassium hydroxide aren't as dangerous as everyone makes it out to be, if you use the necessary precautions. Bar soap is actually fun to make, and it allows you to make creative designs, and add almost anything you want to your soap. Liquid castille soap on the other hand takes longer to make, which is why I don't make it as often.

The Kirk's Castille bar soap feels really nice when you use it as a bath bar. Unfortunately, it seemed to "melt" too fast in the shower (I think it's because it's made from coconut oil, which makes a softer soap). We started using Kiss My Face pure olive oil bar soap and it's a harder bar and lasts longer in the shower. I like the smell of their lavender bar. =) Definitely love using natural things around the house and on our people! =)

I made it twice , I really like it n I dont know the exact recipe : Cornstarch , a lil Liquid soap or shower gel , Oil , Scent , I used Essential Oils n also a Scented Liquid soap can be enough too , optional color , I used a lil food coloring , but You can use soap coloring . Its like putty n You can stretch out the liquid soap n use as a whole soap or break pieces off , also it can make foam soap too , just add water , mix n dilute , put in one of those empty soap foam dispensers . It feels cleansing and not too oily too . Used it mostly for hand washing n like a guest soap . Ive havent seen the Dr. Jacobs yet , I would have to try ) . Ive used Dr . Bronners with Baking Soda and Essential Oils , n also with Bleach or Vinegar if required for laundry before . I like to do it that way . Thank You for sharing .

Dr. Bronners did not invent castile soap - castile soap just means olive oil soap. Potassium and sodium hydroxide are similarly non-caustic once fully saponified, they don't harm you and given the right soap recipe they aren't harsh either. The original castile soap is probably from Marseille, its a tweaked recipe from the Aleppo soap of Syria - as there wasn't any laurel oil available in Europe. And it is hundreds of years old, much older than the 1920/30s when Dr. Bronner came about. I personally would use Aleppo soap instead of Dr. Bronners (except perhaps for brushing teeth, though in a dire situation, why not?), as it is highly versatile and contains only two oils. It is easier on the hair than Dr. Bronners and is an amazing stain remover from clothes. It does have a weird smell though, due to the laurel berry oil. I highly recommend trying it nonetheless.

Love the Scriptures at the end of your videos. My brother-in-law uses the soap to spray plants with aphids, mixed with a bit of chewing tobacco. No, he doesn't chew himself.

It isn't yummy, but it is safe and works! I will post a video later where I doctor it up a bit for toothpaste. You are right though. I am glad to know we can use it for toothpaste just as it is in a pinch.
