About Jeremiah Craig
I love telling stories with my music and folk ballads are my passion. This is why I call myself a Balladeer. I’ve included many story elements in my songs since the beginning of my songwriting career in the Rochester, NY area. Then I continued my journey in Phoenix, Seattle, and currently in Boston. In 2004 I made my musical debut with the band Bluegrass Tuesday. I totally agree with you about leather soles and leather lining . My Boulet Boots have both and have lasted for years and they don't smell inside after many years of wearing and resoling.

Best cowboy boots hands down are not the brands it’s the mom and pop shop get them custom made most have no clue how a boot feels or no good from bad I say Mexican boots are the best or a Spanish company a lot of cowboy boots are branded I say wen you are in Texas or Mexico or Spain get a boot from a place run buy a Mexican the best cobblers in the world or Spanish Spain makes awesome boots most big names have sold out and a lot of ther stuff is made in China and rebranded not ther high end boots but a normal half affordable

The best boot is the one that that fits and works best for you. I have great boots from different brands. I'm going to try a Luchesse next. Right now Ariat and Tony Llama are my go to boots. The Ariat Ventek is my fave.

For dress shoes and dress boots you can consider Blake stitching 😁. It is resolable but it jsut needs a machine. So for my causual boots, i have goodyear stitching, and for my dress occasions, i use the ones with blake stitching. Yeah case to case basis. Both are good with pros and cons.

Funny you mention tecovas free shipping, i actually went to their showroom in Austin haha. Perks of living in Texas, if your ever down here definitely stop by there cause its awesome there (they gave me a free beer, anyone who does that is a friend in my book). I completely agree with you, the reason why i dont like Ariat is because the boots ive had experience with didnt last long at all, and the Stetson boots i tried on didnt fit right. I took my boots to my local cobbler and they said my justin bent rail boots are a great find mainly because of the lether welt.

I ordered some techova suede roughouts. Beautiful boot, but just did not fit my foot. Really wide heel and I have odd feet. I returned them and got a refund. Really nice company. I ended up finding and buying some Lucchese Livingston suede sand washed. My lucky day I must say. They were about $200 more expensive but are much nicer boots and fit like a leather glove. They remind me of the boots Clint Eastwood wore on Rawhide and his Spaghetti western movies.

Hey Jeremiah/all, Is there a way to tell if your boots have a Goodyear welt, and what type of lasting was done on them just by looking at them? If not, are there brands that use these methods on all or most of their boots? Thanks guys

You can't tell what kind of lasting was done on them but you can tell a goodyear welt is the stitching is real on the outsole. Some companies will try to fool you by putting a stitch pattern around the welt area. I don't like any faux design features. I think they reflect poor craftsmanship. Most big brands have goodyear welts and hand lasted construction depending on the model.

Brendan Schroeder Jeremiah’s right, gotta’ look for those stitches. As for the lasting, you may be able to Google the brand & model number on the inside of the boot, if there is one. Sometimes you can find out how they’re made with a bit of searching.

You cam check of yours is a good year welt by looking at the stitch per inch in the top of your insole vs the bottom of your sole. THEY MUST BE EQUAL IN NUMBER.

The best boot brands are the ones that are great. I don't know which ones are great but God knows the perfect pair of each person. And do you know if when you get boots resoled if the cobbler can tighten the leather on the vamp? I mean the leather overtop the arch of your foot.

They can tighten the leather as far as I know but not around your foot. I've never heard of anyone doing that anyways

#4 a leather heel counter. Plastic heal counter will not conform to your foot and it gets brittle over time.

Am ashamed to admit I really don't know what you mean by "goodyear welt"...Have heard the term before, but don't know what it means or how to determine if a pair of boots has it.... Like you say, look and fit are more personal issues that might help chose a brand/style. Totally agree about being leather lined, that man made stuff makes your feet stink and doesn't stand up. Thanks for explaining about the "hand lasted" procedure, makes sense....But wondering if the manufacturer even provides this info with the boots. Trying to buy new boots "online" is a risky/frustrating venture, even if return shipping is included...Unless you have had experience with the brand/style you are looking at online...

"Goodyear welt construction" involves stitching a welt to the upper and a strip of preformed canvas like a "rib" that runs all around and bottom (known as "gemming") cemented to the insole of a shoe as an attach-point for the out sole or midsole (depending on the Goodyear welt variant). The space enclosed by the welt is then filled with cork or some other filler material (usually either porous or perforated, for breathability), and the outsole is both cemented and stitched to the welt. Shoes with other types of construction may also have welts. Goodyear welt soles are typically replaceable so you can keep the same pair of boots potentially for life.

No need to be ashamed! If you see stitching on the outside edges of the boot and it goes through to the sole it is most likely Goodyear welt. Most major brands do it and usually brag about it in the details of the product. Manufacturers sometimes say if they hand last a boot. Lucchese does. You can ask them though and they should tell you. Lots of brands have factory videos on KZbin too and you can see if they do it in those vids too.
