Cakoi or fried dough stick is very well loved by Malaysian. You can eat it almost with everything, dip in coffee, dip in soups, eat with curry, smothered with kaya, cut up into rojak and so much more. Even having it plain is good enough for me.

Most impressed that you are prepared to line up & wait for 30 min to get your nasi kandar, I thought only locals would do that ...... ..that only shows how Malaysian you are! Must admit I am less Malaysian than you, I have not try the nasi kandar at Deen Maju, simply bcos I got scarred when I see those long quene whenever I drive the place.

The first video of yours I've watched. Won't be the last. *SUBSCRIBE* I'm so addicted to that thick unctuous Malay coffee, I buy pre-packed sachets of it in my local Asian supermarket and chug it down with sweetened condensed milk like I'm in a kopitiam. A kopi susu gelas with roti canai is my "go-to" breakfast when I'm over there. The story goes that if you count each stall in a food court, along with every other place on Pulau Pinang that serves food, you can eat three meals a day, seven days a week, for three years or more and not visit the same place twice. It's greater variety of Malay and Indian cuisines, added to the Chinese, puts Penang ahead of Singapore as a place to be overwhelmed by the choices you have, in my opinion. (Singapore, of course, has all the international stuff, but I'm not in South East Asia to eat traditional English roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.) The more favourable exchange rate for the ringgit makes it even better. Kudos on the way you put this video together. You know your stuff, and admit it when you don't, but you're not pretentious about it. You're enthusiastic to bring the food to us, the viewer, without being over-the-top excited. I don't think I've ever heard bahasa melayu spoken with an Alabama accent before, so there's one for me! But, as you've doubtless found out, you make an attempt to speak a bit of Malay and the locals warm to you Loved the dude at the end in the Mark Wiens T-shirt. Saving my pennies to get back to Singapore and Malaysia next year. Watching videos like this only makes me want it that much more. Cheers! Garry a.k.a. Uncle Gweilo
@Macoi245 жыл бұрын
"Uncle Gweilo" the greatest thing I have seen today hahaha! Man where are you at now? I agree with a lot of what you said about exchange rate and not going to eat the Yorkshire pudding. So what area of Malaysia do you enjoy? Penang or more south like Malacca? Maybe more east? Sarawak? Sounds like we need to share a meal forsure man. Really appreciate what all you wrote because a lot of that is what i try and do. And I can believe that food stall fact forsure.Hmmm with roti canai, I seem to like the teh tarik, or maybe a little kopi/teh tarik blend! Oh, btw it's Arkansas not Alabama😝😝😝Cheers brother! sorry, Uncle Gweilo 😁
@Your.Uncle.AngMoh5 жыл бұрын
@@Macoi24 My Bad. I e-mailed someone about your channel and told them Arkansas. Where the hell I got Alabama from escapes me! I live in Brisbane- the one in Australia, not the Brisbane near San Francisco Airport. I have yet to get to Sarawak and Sabah- maybe next time, before they rip out or burn down the rest of the rainforest. I lived in Singapore for a couple of years as a kid at the start of the 70's, which started a love affair for there and Malaysia that has yet to be sated. When I go back to Malaysia now, it's usually just for relaxation. To that end, I love the Cameron Highlands. I hire a car and drive straight there for a good couple of days. It's a lot cooler and less humid, and very quiet unless it's the weekend or school holidays. I get a room in a backpackers up there and relax, take a trip out to one of the tea plantations or the waterfall, and just generally goof off and catch up on sleep and some reading. And eat! I love the north-east states of Kelantan and Terengganu. Not many westerners venture far beyond the tourist spots, so being a 6'6, 270 pound, 50+-year-old orang putih/"round eye" wearing a pair of shorts gains me some possibly unneeded attention, but it's all good fun. I have a grab-bag of Malay phrases that get me through for the very few that speak no English. There's always charades if neither of us understands the other! I've only explored the Colonial core of Melaka and need to branch out and see more of that city as well as the towns in the centre of the peninsula. There's a KZbin channel Beer For Breakfast. Two girls travelling about, and they did quite a detailed series of videos on Malaysia a year or so back if you haven't heard of it. Taiping and Ipoh are nice and quiet in comparison to the chaos of KL. And then there's Penang. Last time I was In Malaysia, 2017, I spent three or four days on the island driving around looking at a lot of non-touristy things, as well as the spice and tropical fruit gardens. That was right at the time MH370 disappeared and the cathartic outpouring of grief was incredible. I can only imagine it rivalling something like "9/11" in The States. I also want to get up to the north-west and the Thai border. Again, not too many westerners venture far from the tourist spots, of which there are few. Mostly the train crossing into Had Yai. I have a good friend who lives in Johor Bahru and I have promised him to spend a couple of days there. Looks like I've just planned my holiday! Take care, Garry
@Macoi245 жыл бұрын
Awesome story forsure! We will have to go to Malaysia at the same time! Im thinking next year doing a big trip like I did this year but go down the east side of the west island or I could do Sarawak. JB is nice but I didn't really get away from city center. Haha, definitely sounds like you stand out a little in rural or any part of Malaysia. So much to see, I want to go back to Penang, but go to the other side of the island and see butterworth more as well. Yeah, I feel like I could go on forever. And it is okay about Alabama, it's all good and fun banter.

As a sucker for Nasi Kandar, here are my thoughts: Deen Maju is good, but it is not my number one option, each Nasi Kandar has its own uniqueness, can't say which is better, but if I have to choose one, Restoran Mohammed Raffee Nasi Kandar at Burma Road, Pulau Tikus would be my favorite. The reasons are: 1. The queue is much shorter 2. Whatever curry Deen Maju have, you can find them all here, mostly I mean. 3. Among all the ayam goreng I have tried, theirs is the best, the chicken is fantabulously marinated, the skin is so crispy outside, and the meat is so juicy inside. If you love crispy chicken marinated with heavenly mixed spices, why would you want to miss that? Little tips: 1. Whenever I need to choose which part of ayam goreng for my nasi kandar, I always go for the chicken thigh with drumstick, it is definitely much juicier than chicken breast or other part. In case you prefer chicken thigh with drumstick just like me, you got to tell the staff specifically, otherwise they will certainly choose the chicken breast or chicken wing for you. 2. The chefs in the kitchen will only deep fry a new batch of ayam goreng when all the chicken thighs, breasts and wings sold out. So if you seriously want to eat something tender juicy and crispy, make sure you queue at the very front, otherwise whoever queue in front of you will get them all and you would have to wait for the next round 3. All different kinds of curry added to the rice, taste wonderful, however I am not so satisfied with the amount of the gravy they usually provide, so I always asked the staff to add more curry to my plate, in that way you got an enhanced version (here is how you tell them: kuah campur, banjir -> means mix all the curry, make it flood) 4. There is one kind of curry (ayam madu -> means honey chicken, it is a sweet curry, but in a tasty complicated way) which I like it very much but they won't give you unless you specifically say you want it. Honestly the ayam madu curry here isnt the best but still it enhance the overall taste since the other curry is more of salty spicy and the honey chicken curry is sweet so it creates a sophisticated contrast. The best curry ayam madu I have ever tried is at the Hameediyah Restaurant, Campbell street 5. One more tip to make the nasi kandar taste even better, but unfortunately it is not available here, but you could do it in other nasi kandar restaurant, what i mean is ask for extra deep fried aromatic shallot (bawang goreng) to eat with the nasi kandar I guess this is it, glad you love Penang, in case you ever come back here again, hope the tips help !!!
@Macoi245 жыл бұрын
Hey, I respect your opinion. I will check out RMRNK when back in Penang. However, out of the 9 I ate in Penang this was my favorite day time Nasi Kandar. Can you really eat nasi kandar if you do not order kuah campur banjir? haha but always good to meet another Nasi Kandar fanatic like myself.
@darrenyeoh64535 жыл бұрын
@@Macoi24 Deen Maju certainly is one of the best Nasi Kandar in Penang, I still love it, the fact is the more Nasi Kandar restaurant I try, the more hidden gems I found, it is like you never knew which is your new favorite lol...Of course I can eat nasi kandar without the kuah campur banjir, but hey, why waste the essence of those curries, it makes your nasi kandar much tastier by many folds, anyway that's how l like to eat it, maybe when you find your favourite way then you can share with us haha...Cheers 🍺🍺🍺
