Excellent video Dr. McDougall! Hypertension runs in my family. I am a decades-long near vegan, now vegan, in my 60s, and for the last 25 years my blood pressure goes very high to low, but more and more it is high, salt and stress sensitive. It would get so high that I had terrible symptoms, suddenly dizzy, racing heartbeat and blurred vision, and I would go to the emergency room. They diagnosed panic attacks,, although I wasn't feeling any emotional panic,, at least until the extreme symptoms.. My blood pressure would be extremely high,, 260 over 100+. They would put me in a bed, and monitor my vitals, and over about 3 hours, my blood pressure would go right down to 120/70. One time, an ER doctor sat down next to me right before I was released and said: "Listen to me very carefully. Many doctors, when they see how high your blood pressure is, they will want to put you on drugs to lower it. And if you take those drugs, when you go to sleep, your blood pressure will drop too low, and you will die." I also have blood sugar that goes up and down, but am not diagnosed diabetic. These things have complicated my health, and most doctors don't have much good advice. But that one doctor probably saved my life.

Your blood sugar is suppose to go up after you eat a meal and come back down gradually, and follow that pattern consistently. Is that what's happening to you, if so it's nothing to worry about, it's simply the process of your food filling you with energy and your body using the energy throughout the day. As long as your sugar doesn't stay high due to insulin resistance you're fine, you shouldn't want it to stay low by avoiding certain foods either, so yeah your sugar is suppose to go up and down but in a consistent pattern. As for the blood pressure, are you still eating salt,? If so try sea salt rather than your typical refined salt, sea salt doesn't spike your blood pressure as much. So if you buy any processed foods try to get the organic version, that's usually an indication that it's made with sea salt but still check the ingredients to confirm. Also try to do less stressing.

The rice diet brought my bp to normal and after 3 straight days of eating only oatmeal with blueberries or bananas for 3 meals a day, I was able to reduce my bp meds and then not needing them at all within a week . My bp at it's highest was 190/110. I am 52.

Thirty some odd years ago I went to doctor's office and my BP was high. He wanted to put me on blood pressure medication. I said for how long and he said the rest of my life. Eating plant based and I try to eat a very low sodium (Kempner style) diet, my BP today was 100/60, no medication (almost 70). It seems to me, as Dr. McDougall states, eating the RDA amount will lower BP a bit, but really going low is where the body changes.

My blood pressure spikes for the first half of the day to about 145/85 (I know that hormones spike up in the morning, raising BP) but then in the later part of the day and especially in the evening, it drops down to about 125/73, or sometimes recently 114/67. Mine does the same with the morning spikes. So I take the B/P med at night to help the morning b/p because without it it’s 180/100 and I feel weak and sluggish. But by evening it sometimes goes very low and I get a little dizzy. I’ve lost 10 lbs but still need to lose another 15. I’m concerned how I’m gonna manage with continuing this b/p med. 😟

I have a question. Why does my blood pressure seem to be weight related? I started the potato diet a while back. I was 250 lbs. My BP was 145/95 for a long time. I exercised an hour a day and ate a potato based diet. The weight just melted off, but the BP didn't drop until I got down to about 185 pounds. And even then it was 125/75. I then began to eat a whole food plant based diet. My problem is that I eat a lot. I'll eat 3 servings of oatmeal with fruit for breakfast, a 3 pound salad for lunch, and 3 cups of rice or potatoes with a vegetable for dinner. So I gained a good bit of weight back. Went up to about 215. And my BP went back up. I'm still exercising, eating a plant-based diet, and eating zero added salt on an already low-sodium diet. Yet I can't control my BP unless I weigh less.

@soniajacobs30382 жыл бұрын
It must be weight related… for me, too. Dr. McDougal said that for people who can’t get their BP down by diet alone, he gives them a med., and then, when they finally lose the rest of the fat, the BP drops and they can go off that med. Also, it can take years for heavily damaged blood vessels to clear and heal. Just stay on WFPB diet. Slow and steady will get us there eventually.

It goes up for varied reasons: age, genetics, changes to immunity with age, systemic changes from a past virus, spinal compression, etc. The problem is 99% of these factors aren’t taken into consideration with standard of care in our medical system. This doctor is at least thinking for himself. I applaud that, although his outcomes won’t necessarily be better. He’s just confident they will. I agree that hypertension is a symptom of something deeper. Medical science hasn’t discovered what that is yet. The BEST doctors treat the patient, not the numbers. Some may need veganism, some herbs, some a spa lifestyle, some weight loss. No one protocol fits every case.
