@@ElusiveFrame What you said about buying lenses that would still be useful when I upgrade my camera is something I've thought about for a while, and I think it's what is preventing me from buying the EF-M 22mm. If I upgrade to a full-frame then I will just have to sell it. Would make more sense to buy one of the same focal length but EF-S and then a speed booster. Or am I getting it all wrong? I'm new at photography, so please let me know if I'm thinking about this all wrong.
@ElusiveFrame3 жыл бұрын
@@pedrosgarden An EF-S might not be the route to go with. If you use an EF-S lens with a speedbooster on a crop sensor camera (like the M50) or a full frame camera then you'll get vignetting (because they are designed for smaller sensors). I've got a video about using an EF-S lens with my Canon M50 (although I would recommend non Canon EF-S lenses): kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5nFgIFne7ipo9k As for a full frame camera, it would only be usable if you put the camera in a crop sensor mode. But that beats the whole purpose of a full frame camera. If you think about it, once you upgrade to a better camera, your Canon M50 can still be used. I certianly still use my Canon M50, so it's nice having at least one lens that can live on that camera comfortablly. And in the worst case, the used market is a great place to sell lenses in. So unless you're going to upgrade to a better camera soon, I would still get a 22 just because it's such a good bargain. Afterwards I would focus on good EF lenses that would serve my future camera.

I bought an M5 several years ago as a "fun" camera, planning to use it primarily for street and perhaps some travel photography. (I use five DSLRs and about 18 lenses for "work") I wanted to keep my M5 kit small, light and relatively inexpensive. I also wanted to avoid zooms, since I grew up using mostly primes, back in the days when most zooms really sucked. Sort of an "old school" method was what I wanted. Initially I went with all manual focus lenses: Meike (Opteka) 12mm f/2.8, Rokinon 21mm f/1.4, Kamlan 50mm f/1.1 II and adapted a Tamron 90mm macro I already had. I soon discovered I wasn't nearly as good manual focusing as I was 25 or 30 years ago. Or maybe I just got spoiled by AF. Whatever the reason, I was really struggling with the manual focus lenses, so I replace three of them with: Canon EF-M 22mm f/2, Sigma 56mm f/1.4 and Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 adapted (Commlite) with a set of macro extension tubes (Viltrox). I kept using the Meike 12mm because it's manual focus wasn't an issue. On the one hand, the type of shots I tend to use it for typically allow time for focusing, plus such a wide lens has a lot of depth of field making precise focus less critical than, say, a large aperture telephoto. I considered the three Viltrox lenses (23mm, 33mm, 56mm and all f/1.4), even waiting for tgem to be intro'd in EF-M mount... But was disappointed to see them only offered painted silver. I wanted black to be as unobtrusive as possible, for street shooting (though they appear to be excellent and would look especially nice in one of the silver M-series cameras). I also just wasn't interested in 33mm "normal" lenses and didn't feel the Sigma 16mm was wide enough (plus it's rather hefty). This has been working out well. The while kit of camera, 4 lenses and all the accessories in a small shoulder bag weigh less than some of my DSLR lenses by themselves. It's a fun kit to shoot with, though I still had two problems. One was the lens hood for the EF-M 22mm... It's silly. Instead I got a 43mm screw in metal, ventilated, generic hood. It nearly doubles the size of the lens, although still the smallest in my bag. I leave the hood on all the time and cap it for storage, rather than the lens. I only remove the good when I want to use a filter (a screw in hood works better with filters, anyway). $5 off ebay. The other problem was the camera seemed quite small and fiddly to shoot with, after using big DSLRs with lenses that weigh 3, 6 or even 8 lb. for many years. I accidentally solved that, too. I was looking for an Arca-Swiss plate to fit the M5 and there simply aren't a lot of them. Then I found an L-bracket (also ebay... made in China, of course) and for $16 incl. shipping figured it was worth a try. I didn't expect much and am not a fan of L-brackets, never use them on my larger cameras. However I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent quality and perfect fit, plus that the bracket added just a little bulk to the camera that made it much more comfortable to shoot with! I'm quite happy with my M5 kit now. The only thing I might change is that I would rather have a 100mm or 105mm lens, instead of the 85mm. I've considered getting the Sigma 105mm macro in EF mount, but it's larger than I like. And I already have a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro... Great lens, but also bulky. Canon used to make an EF 100mm f/2 USM (non macro) that I might try. It's almost exactly the same size as the EF 85mm f/1.8... But harder to find. When I need close up ability, I could still use the macro extension rings, too, same as with the 85mm.

First of all, thank you for the long comment. You told your story in a very good way. 🤩 I loved watching camera channels be it photography or filmmaking before I even had a camera. I ended up buying the M50 as my first camera and it was incredible. I learned so many things with it; photography and filmmaking. 🤩 I would suggest a good hack for your M5 that worked for my M50: a cage. 🤓 The M cameras are small, which is great because they're compact, but the grip always felt lacking in longer sessions of street photography. A cage added that little bit more of weight and grip without making the camera feel too large; it still feels small. 👌 As for the lenses, as a 22mm lens fan the viltrox 23mm does seem tempting, even with the annoying silver color. 🙂 Thank you for watching!

Hi Cheryl and thank you for watching! 🤓 As someone who is starting out I would just suggest to go with the 55-200 and experience the camera, especially since you are going on a vacation. Have fun and enjoy with one lens. 😎 There is an additional cost and research involved to grow your lens collection when you go down the EF route. I myself started with some EF-M lenses and got the basics of my camera before I started buying more lenses, especially ones for different mounts. I'm not familiar with the 55-200 but the zoom range is good, especially when you go on vacation for everything that is far or close. 😄 You could do a general research about a good EF-M zoon lens. And I would currently recommend it just because I was overwhelmed by this world of lenses and mounts. For me It was easier to just start with one dedicated ef-m lens and learn. First learn the basics and have fun while doing it. 😉

I bought into the EF-M system because it was compact and the lenses were light and it offered enthusiasts the larger APS-C sensor based system similar in size to MFT equipment but with a larger sensor. For the last few years the EF-M mount has been kept going by Sigma, Viltrox and various manual lenses from Chinese companies. The problem with using adaptors is that you end up buying large and heavier EF / EF-S lenses defeating the purpose of buying a small compact system. So thanks Canon for abandoning users of the EF-M mount. I have started to 'future-proof' as best as one can, by eventually abandoning Canon, as a reward, for MFT & the Sony E system, although with the trend for APS-C cameras increasing in bulk (such as the alpha 6700) you may as well own a FF camera if they're going to be a similar size.
@ElusiveFrame Жыл бұрын
I came across the same problem once I switched to MFT. I sold all my EF lenses after discovering how affordable and tiny MFT lenses can be! 😄 MFT is supported by Olympus and Panasonic as camera brands and plenty of lenses exist for it. I've actually created a video listing those lenses here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6e5pXSjabSFhbc The issue with other brands like Sony, aside from the size is the lenses. Their incentive is for us to buy into Full Frame, which is why APS-C lenses are often times cheap plastic. Fuji is the other brand I would consider buying into, seeing how they treat their APS-C as pro-grade cameras and lenses. 🤩

I don't think Canon will kill the EOS-M lineup in the future since the small sized cameras are really interesting for amateurs, streamers and vloggers. The lens lineup they offer already is covering those customers needs quite good so I doubt too many new lenses will be added to the lineup. I just see them updating the cameras and lenses they already have every now and then to adapt to new technologies since that will be a really economic way to fill that market segment and not completely surrender it to Sony and their Alpha 5000-6000 cameras. Still I have mostly EF(-S) glass on my M50 MkII since it is just so much cheaper to get second hand. Other than that I just have the 15-45mm and 22mm EF-M and also a Helios 44M. So even with me not seeing the mount die soon we come to the same conclusion ^^

Great points! I totally agree on them not killing it officially since it would upset a lot of new and current customers. What I foresee is a slow decline in releases (death by stagnation). O&A My Way, you are correct, Canon is shifting from DSLR's and even the M Series to ramp up the RF series, at least from what I read. Bad news for photographers, and even at a time when camera sells are down across the board. The M50m2 is a GREAT camera and there are MANY still in use, but Canon doesn't support them anymore. There are good EF/EF-S lenses that work with adapters and they work really well. The adapters don't work with some of the 3rd party EF lenses though. I sent my M50m2 to my son, I was using the Tamron 18-200mm EFM lens with it and it worked well. My son just bought a Sigma 30mm f1.4 EFM lens and it takes great photos with that lens. I went with Fujifilm, I bought an X-T3 and I am currently using a Tamron 18-300mm lens. Fuji has some really nice lenses and Sigma is coming out with lenses and Tamron is supposed to be coming out with 3 more lenses also. There is growing support for the X mount cameras. BUT from replies here, let me tell a little about Fuji. I got lazy with Canon, I like a good easy camera and got it with Canon!! With Fujifilm you need to learn settings. With Canon on Program mode it will take care of nighttime shooting. With Fujifilm you can have everything on "auto" and you still need to adjust ISO and Speed or Aperture. Fujifilm has great color reproduction and daylight it is an easy camera to use, it is bigger and heavier than the Canon M camera. Fuji is affordable and lenses are also. You can still find good deals on used Canon M cameras, the M50 or M50m2 are great, only get lenses you need for now, get an adapter and some EF lenses. Then wait to see when the APS-C RF camera comes out (supposed to be second half of this year....supposed to be around 800$ from what I read) I still hope Canon will come to their sense and see there are a lot of EOS-M camera users!!! again, sorry, I just thought I would put in my comment about Fujifilm.

Not sure about the M6II because I don't have that camera. 🤔 It does give great results on the M50 with the speedbooster. 🤓 But I wouldn't go with either of those cameras anyways because Canon just announced their new APS-C RF cameras and you can just get an adapter from RF to EF. I bought into this system for its small size and weight, therefore using the much larger and heavier EF lenses doesn’t make sense. Furthermore, you can buy the ef-m lenses used for very cheap, nothing much too loose there.

I just bought this lens and used it in my last video on my GH5. 🙂 I loved the image and the sharpness that came out of it so it's a great lens like the rest of the reviews praise it to be. 👌 But, it's a different realm of lenses because they lack any form of auto focus and you need to do a research before you dive into the vintage lens world. So I wouldn't recommend it to most people just because of that. 🤔 Thank you for watching! 🤩

@ElusiveFrame3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim! It's always fun finding another Tim. 😎 I don't have the lens but I heard all the EF-M lenses of Sigma are great. The reviews were positive! 😃 This is a great review that covers a lot of lenses, the 30mm as well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHuXdJKIeaqaa7s. Of course, I would recommend getting an EF lens because it's more future proof but it all depends on your usage. 😎

@@ElusiveFrame Thanks for your reply…. i am still not sure if I should get a speedbooster for my 50mm f1.8 instead of the sigma. Hard decision😅
@ElusiveFrame3 жыл бұрын
@@tim-n.schutze8796 A speed booster might reduce crop factor and provide an additional stop of light but it's also a means to future proof your gear. ⏱️ EF lenses can be adapted to almost any mount, so buying a speed booster will allow you to mount more lenses in the future. These future lenses could live in your next camera. It will also allow you to buy a wider range of lenses, some can be a lot cheaper. 🙃 With a speedbooster your 50mm lens will be 56.8mm (50 x 1.6 x 0.71). The 30 will be a 48mm (30 x 1.6). The difference is negligible but it's up to you. 😁 The 50mm with a speedbooster goes all the way down to f1.2. I'm starting to like it for thumbnails because of the insane shallow depth of field you can get. The B-Roll where the 17-50 and 24-015 were present was shot on the 50mm. 🤓

@ElusiveFrame3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I forgot to talk about it. 🤦♂️ You're correct. The sigma 17-50 is for crop sensor cameras. 👌 As for the vignette - It depends. On video mode there is none, even at 1080. On picture/manual modes you can clearly see it. I'll write it down as a video idea since I have no idea why it's even working. 🤔 Hope it answers your question. If you have more just drop 'em here. 🤩

@@ElusiveFrame that would be great! i have the lens as is, but i want to see what the speed booster does versus having the normal adapter. if you could upload a video and maybe private link it?
@ElusiveFrame3 жыл бұрын
@@CODTales I only tried it with the Canon M50 so I can't guarantee it for any other camera without understanding it fully. So, if you have a Canon M50 camera (1.6x crop) and you put a speedbooster on it with a crop sensor lens then it would work in video mode, no matter the frames or if it's full hd or 4k). 👌 As for other cameras, I would check other reviews. From what I've heard Canon EF-S lenses are not recommended at all and you should mostly adapt EF full frame lenses. I had the 24-105 so buying the speedbooster was an easy decision. Finding out it works with the 17-50 was a happy accident. 😃 The talking head and all the B-Rolls where the 17-50 isn't present were shot on the 17-50 with the speedbooster in full HD. The talking head was in 24 frames and the B-Rolls in 60 frames. The only thing that I applied in editing apart from color grading is a small barrel distortion fix for the talking head clips. For photos, you'll get a vignette for sure.

@@ElusiveFrame great. this answers my question completely. i only need the camera for video so thank you!
@ElusiveFrame3 жыл бұрын
@@CODTales I finally understand how it works and I don't want to mislead you or anybody reading this. 🤔 The only way it worked in Full HD was because digital IS was turned on (because it crops in on the sensor). Once I removed the IS I could see the vignette. So you can use your 17-50 in full HD, but make sure you turn your IS on. 😎 As for 4k, it already crops in on the sensor so IS doesn't have to be turned on. 😉 As for other lenses, it looks like only a small part of EF-S lenses work with the speedbooster so I wouldn't bother with that. 👌 I'll add this to my list of future videos, to make things more clear for the community. 😁

@ElusiveFrame3 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you for watching! 🤓 It's true that EF-S lenses don't work but it looks like it's only with a Canon brand lens (I didn't find any good documentation on the subject). 🤷♂️ And I adapted a Sigma EF-S lens. Do note that there ia vignette when using such a lens, so make sure you buy a speedbooster mainly for a full frame lens. You can get rid of the vignette by using enhanced digital stabilization (which crops the image) or crop it yourself in post. 😎

I have the m6 mk2 with the volt rod speed booster using the sigma 17-50mm. For some reason you can see vignetting from the lense any way I can fix it?
@ElusiveFrame2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bernie! You have vignette because the glass is too small for the widened frame the speedbooster creates. The only solution would be to crop it. ✂️ You can do it either by turning the image stabilization all the way to enhanced (it works on the M50 so I'm not sure how it will fair on the M6), or to crop it in the editing process. I would also suggest to fix barrel distortion in the editing process, since it will be well pronounced at the wider focal range. Thank you for watching! 🤩
