I think the black and white format (most) manga uses really works well with horror. The shading and contrast between light and dark really make scenes pop in a way I think color doesn't.

yeah, is like using 'practical effects' in horror movies, colour does the same than 'digital monsters', it ruins it ;)

Yes. To the extent that if Junji Ito were printed in colour, it would ruin much of the aesthetic of his art.

You summarize the books perfectly, you show the artwork, and you keep the title up there long enough so that I can just screenshot the ones I really wanna read. Awesome list. I think from one of your virtual tours, Corpse Delivery Service and Parasyte were pick ups for me which I'm caught up on both series. I was waiting for the fifth volume of the omnibus of Corpse Delivery Service having not wasted time picking up the previous volumes. Hopefully it still comes out. Learning my lesson not to wait on those chances to grab something that might not come back. I see you have the Museum of Terror collections from Dark Horse. I have those too. I didn't waste no time picking up anything Junji Ito when his stuff got an English release. Some of those prints are not only harder to find, but really expensive I've seen on Amazon marketplace and eBay. Surprised to hear Domu being hard to find. I could have swore I saw a copy at my local comic shop though not the one I have in my library when it first got released. Gantz, Monster, Berserk and Battle Royale (illustrated) I haven't gotten around too. I would put Berserk up there since I was asked recently about it and hearing high praise. And now I'm considering to keep my eyes open for Battle Royale. I passed up on the manga and just read the actual literature which was almost 700 pages and enjoyable. I grabbed my copy the moment it got released through Viz publication in the early-mid 2000s. The Battle Royale movies are great but I just loved reading the story and visualizing it that way from my imagination. I must have missed the love the Tomie series doesn't get enough of from the fans. That's where it started for me before Pulp Manga Magazine introduced Uzumaki back then. Ito's work is creepy and just knows how to psychologically get to our worst fears. To put something normal that affects our conscience in any way takes some talent and it shows in his art and the characters in the story, likable or not. There's something alluring to it that you can't step away from. I always finish his works, but there has been some stories I've not gone back to revisit and that is something I can admit is haunting to leave that impression.

I had the disservice of reading the piss poor English translation of Battle Royale's volumes 7-9 by Tokyopop as I was missing the now out-of-print 3rd Omnibus of the Perfect Edition in French (yes, I read most manga in French when available here in Canada lol). I do own the rest of it, so at least I got to still enjoy reading it and seeing the gratuitous violence front and center. Hopefully, Dark Horse or any other well respected Western manga publishers will grab the rights to re-release AND re-translate the manga to be much closer to the original Japanese script. This list of yours is giving me some ideas for Halloween season this year, so thank you for sharing your recommendations!

Sadly, I could not get into Tomie! I had high hopes too. It definitely looks like it gets scarier the further along you get, but I believe I didn’t get past the 3rd or 4th chapter. Words cannot describe how happy I am to to see the Drifting Classroom on here. Oh my goodness, SO happy. This was the first manga I read and made me search out more. Berserk definitely is wayyy more than horror. There are so many elements to it. And yes, I understand about weirdly liking it even though I probably shouldn’t.

Stupid Question but for these Mangas that begin with what would normally be the back as the standard for books in the states do you still read them left to right or right to left?
@rachelfoulks44435 ай бұрын
You read them right to left always. But when looking at the title on the book cover, they still print the title the standard way of left to right. If the spine of the book is in your right hand, read right to left. Sometimes you do get an American author who makes a manga. POLLY AND THE PIRATES is an example of an Americanized manga. But the spine will be in your left hand. So that one you will read left to right. Sometimes, it is rare to find a left to right manga. Yes I know this video is old, yes I know this comment is old. But I am leaving it here to help anyone who is new to manga or still struggling how to read a manga. Most manga now put a "Stop this is the back of the book," now.
